Urea face cream: choose 2, 5 or 10%

A urea face cream moisturizes primarily at 2% or 5%, while a 10% concentration becomes more emollient and more likely to sting. Urea is part of the stratum corneum's natural moisturizing factor. The choice of percentage should therefore follow the area and tolerance.

Urea is part of the natural moisturizing factor

Urea is naturally present in the stratum corneum among the natural moisturizing factors. This small hygroscopic molecule attracts water and supports surface suppleness. Very dry skin may have reduced levels of these compounds and higher water loss.

In a urea face cream, the concentration changes the function. Up to about 5%, the effect is mainly humectant. Around 10%, the emollient action becomes more pronounced and can sting on irritated skin.

Choosing between 2, 5, and 10% for the face

Concentration Facial Use Profile Caution
2% Daily hydration Sensitive skin Moderate effect
5% Visible dryness Dry skin Local test
10% Very rough areas Targeted use Possible stinging
>10% Mainly body Thick skin Professional advice recommended

For first-time use, start with 2% to 5% on the entire face. Reserve 10% for a limited area, such as a rough, non-irritated patch, if the manufacturer specifies this use. The urea sheet details the thresholds.

Read the formula around urea

Glycerin, panthenol, and sodium PCA complement humectation. Ceramides, squalane, and vegetable oils reduce evaporation. A good formula therefore combines water, humectants, and lipids rather than relying on urea alone.

Avoid intense fragrance if the skin feels tight. A cream texture is suitable for dry cheeks, while a gel-cream may be sufficient for combination skin. The page on humectants explains these combinations.

On dry to very dry skin: what urea provides extra

It is on these skin types that the difference with a classic humectant becomes truly visible.

Urea has a dual action that few ingredients combine. It is humectant — it binds water in the stratum corneum, like glycerin. And beyond 10%, it becomes keratolytic: it breaks the bonds between corneocytes and detaches flakes. Very dry skin combining dryness and roughness therefore finds both solutions in a single ingredient.

It also improves the skin's ability to retain water sustainably, and not just for a few hours after application. Studies show that regular use increases the expression of aquaporins and certain skin barrier proteins — in other words, it helps the skin do its job better rather than doing it for it.

On the face, however, keep concentrations low: 2% to 5%. 10% and above are for the body, elbows, and heels. Facial skin treated with a body concentration stings and reddens.

One point that distinguishes real intense hydration from a surface effect: a cream that provides water without fatty substances allows it to evaporate. On very dry skin, urea is therefore combined with lipids — ceramides, squalane, shea butter — otherwise the benefit will not last the day.

Finally, urea is particularly indicated when the skin flakes in fine white scales despite regular hydration. This is a sign of slowed desquamation that humectants alone do not correct.

Seven-day introduction protocol

On the first evening, apply a small amount to the jawline. On days 2 and 3, use a pea-sized amount on the cheeks only. From the fourth day, extend to the forehead if no persistent sensation appears.

  • Day 1: local test
  • Days 2-3: cheeks only
  • Days 4-7: entire face
  • Amount: 1 pea-sized amount
  • SPF in the morning if skin is sensitized

Why a cream can sting

Urea increases the penetration of certain substances and can sting on an altered barrier. A high concentration, an acidic pH, or the presence of other active ingredients accentuate this sensation. Applying just after an exfoliant or shaving also increases the risk.

If the stinging lasts more than a few minutes, rinse and return to a simple formula for several days. Resume with a lower concentration. Cracked or painful skin warrants professional advice.

Morning, evening, and combination with active ingredients

In the morning, apply the cream after a watery serum and before sunscreen. In the evening, it can follow a gentle cleansing without other active ingredients. Wait one week before adding retinol or exfoliating acids.

A 5% urea face cream can be used daily if it remains comfortable. A 10% formula is used more periodically or on a targeted area. The dry skin routine helps organize the layers.

Urea is highly soluble in water and must be stabilized in a properly preserved formula. A homemade product with urea and water does not offer the same microbiological safety as a finished cream. Respect the period after opening indicated on the jar or tube.

A tube limits contact better than a wide jar, especially if the cream is applied to irritated skin. Squeeze a small amount onto a clean finger and close immediately. Avoid returning excess to the packaging.

The skin around the eyes is thinner and can sting even with 5%. Do not approach the movable eyelid unless the formula is explicitly designed for this area. Use an amount equivalent to a grain of rice per side.

In winter, cold outdoor air and indoor heating increase water loss. Apply the cream within two minutes after cleansing. A slightly richer layer in the evening can improve comfort without increasing the percentage of urea.

A urea face cream should be applied to slightly damp skin rather than completely wet. This condition improves spreading without excessively diluting the formula. Then cover the driest areas with a thin emollient layer if necessary.

Urea face cream can be alternated with a cream without active ingredients during the first week. This method more easily identifies the source of stinging. It also avoids combining urea, acids, and retinol on an already uncomfortable barrier.

A urea face cream in a tube is often more practical than a jar for keeping the formula clean. Squeeze a pea-sized amount and spread it over five points of the face. Massage for twenty seconds without pressing on red areas.

A urea cream should not be applied immediately after a very hot shower. Wait for the skin to cool for a few minutes, then use a pea-sized amount. This precaution reduces the stinging sensation related to a temporarily more permeable barrier.

What urea does not do

A urea face cream does not replace all barrier lipids and does not correct a persistent cause of dryness. It mainly improves the water content and suppleness of the stratum corneum. Protection against cold, hot water, and harsh cleansers remains necessary.

A higher concentration is not automatically better for the face. Beyond 10%, the risk of stinging increases and the goal becomes more keratolytic. The right percentage is what the skin tolerates regularly.
