Combining squalane and shea butter: the method

These two fats don't occupy the same territory, and that's what makes the combination useful. Squalane is very light and suitable for the face; shea butter is thick and works best on really dry areas.

Guidelines

  • Order: squalane first, then shea butter.
  • Where: body and rough areas, rarely the entire face.
  • Before: damp skin, or a product that provides water.
  • Quantity: a pea-sized amount of butter for one area, no more.
  • Season: mainly winter.

Two fats that are completely different

Squalane is a pure molecule obtained from olive oil or sugarcane, then hydrogenated. It contains no vitamins or essential fatty acids, penetrates in two minutes, and leaves no film.

Shea butter is extracted from the nuts of Vitellaria paradoxa, a tree from West Africa. Solid at room temperature, it melts on contact with the skin and stays on the surface for a long time.

Its composition is rich in oleic acid and stearic acid, with a fraction of unsaponifiables. It is a nourishing fat, much more complete than squalane, and much heavier.

Where this combination works

On the body in winter, where the skin receives little care and loses a lot. On chapped hands, elbows, heels. And on dry areas of the face, in small quantities.

Squalane prepares and softens, shea butter seals. This layering provides more than either alone on skin truly damaged by the cold.

Where to avoid it

On oily or combination skin, shea butter can be heavy and uncomfortable. Squalane alone, or a light vegetable oil, is more suitable.

Under makeup or sunscreen, too: the texture doesn't combine well, and the finish becomes uncomfortable. Save shea butter for the evening.

The order and its logic

The most fluid first, always. Squalane penetrates quickly; shea butter, applied on top, forms the layer that limits evaporation.

Reversing this would mean applying an occlusive layer that the squalane would have to penetrate. It wouldn't succeed, and the first application would be wasted.

The gesture that changes everything

Apply to damp skin. These fats retain water in the skin; they don't provide it—that's the difference between nourishing and hydrating, and it determines the result.

On the body, the window is narrow: the three minutes after showering. After this time, the skin has dried, and there's not much left to retain.

Quantities

Two drops of squalane for the face, more for the body. A pea-sized amount of shea butter for one area—a knee, two hands, an elbow.

Shea butter is used in very small quantities: it melts, spreads widely, and excess remains sticky for an hour. This is the most common mistake with this product.

Choosing a shea butter

Unrefined preferably: it then retains its ivory color and characteristic, slightly smoky scent. Perfectly white and odorless butter has been refined, which removes some of its unsaponifiables.

The ingredient list should be a single line: Butyrospermum parkii butter. Mixtures with other vegetable oils exist and are sometimes easier to apply, but check the proportions.

Choosing a squalane

The list should be limited to squalane. Beware of squalene without an "a," a non-hydrogenated form that oxidizes quickly.

The origin—olive or sugarcane—makes no difference to the result on the skin. It matters if you prioritize a specific plant-based supply chain.

Grains appearing in the jar

Shea butter that has become grainy has not gone bad. It is a recrystallization due to temperature variations, and it disappears when warmed between the hands.

However, a rancid or pungent odor indicates a product to be discarded. Shea butter lasts one to two years away from heat; squalane, for years.

Limitations of this routine

It nourishes and protects, without acting on wrinkles, spots, or deep texture. These are comfort treatments, which is their full role.

It does not protect from the sun, despite what is written about the natural SPF of shea butter. Daily sun protection remains essential.

When to consult

These products are cosmetic and improve skin comfort without treating any specific condition. Deep chapping, fissures, or dryness that resists appropriate care warrant medical advice.
