Prickly Pear origin: from Mexico to the Maghreb

The prickly pear originated in the Americas, likely Mexico, before spreading to the Mediterranean and North Africa. Opuntia ficus-indica then became integrated into semi-arid landscapes, local cuisines, and cosmetic industries. Its French name therefore reflects its adoption in the Maghreb, not its botanical birthplace.

An American species before becoming Mediterranean

Opuntia ficus-indica belongs to the Cactaceae family and originated in the Americas, with a domestication center generally located in Mexico. The plant was selected for its fruits, edible cladodes, and low spine presence. Its North African image is therefore the result of historical diffusion, not its botanical cradle.

Why the name "Barbarie" is confusing

In French, the word "Barbarie" historically referred to a part of the Maghreb. The fruit therefore received a name linked to a region of diffusion rather than its actual origin. In Spanish, "nopal" is used for the cladodes and "tuna" for the fruit.

The scientific name Opuntia ficus-indica is more precise, although the taxonomy of cultivated cacti remains complex. Opuntia refers to the genus, ficus-indica to the species. The INCI for seed oil generally uses Opuntia ficus-indica seed oil.

How the cactus adapted to arid regions

Flattened cladodes perform photosynthesis instead of durable leaves. The plant uses crassulacean acid metabolism, or CAM, which primarily opens its stomata at night to limit water loss. This strategy explains its relative drought resistance.

Spines protect the plant and reduce air exchange around the surface. Tissues store a large amount of water and mucilage. These adaptations do not mean that all crops yield the same without irrigation.

From Mexico to North Africa

In Mexico, fruits and young cladodes have long been consumed. In North Africa, the plant has become integrated into rural landscapes, hedges, and agricultural systems. It serves as fruit, fodder, a plant barrier, and a cosmetic raw material.

Cosmetic oil comes from the small seeds contained in the fruit, not from the pulp or the entire cactus. Large quantities of fruit are needed to obtain a limited volume of oil. This constraint explains the high price of oil truly pressed from the seeds.

Harvesting, de-spining, and oil extraction

Fruits ripen mainly in summer depending on the region and variety. Harvesting requires gloves and tools due to glochids, tiny spines that are difficult to see. After separating the pulp, the seeds are washed and dried before pressing.

The Mexican origin of the prickly pear does not imply that an oil produced elsewhere is inferior. Terroir, fruit maturity, seed drying, and freshness matter more than the geographical narrative alone. An exotic appellation does not replace quality documents.

The plant does not grow without any water, and its oil is not extracted directly from the entire fruit. Images of cacti do not prove the presence of seed oil in a product. Always check the INCI name and its position in the list.
