Squalane softens the surface, ceramides rebuild it. Both are fats, but one merely occupies space and the others are part of the skin's very structure.

What squalane is
Squalane is obtained from olive oil or sugarcane, then hydrogenated to become stable. Animal-derived squalane, historically from shark liver, is no longer used in common products.
It is a pure molecule, odorless and colorless, that provides neither vitamins nor essential fatty acids. Squalane is an emollient, and nothing else: it softens and limits evaporation.
This neutrality is its main advantage. Alongside a demanding active ingredient, the fewer compounds that can interact, the better.
What ceramides are
Ceramides are lipids naturally present in the outermost layer of the skin. They ensure cohesion between cells and retain water.
Their quantity decreases with age, cold exposure, and aggressive cleansers. Skin that feels tight, reddens easily, or reacts to everything often lacks them.
Unlike squalane, ceramides do not merely cover: they fill a deficit in the structure. This is a difference in nature, not degree.
Which one to choose

Using them together
This is the best option, and it costs nothing extra. Squalane first, being more fluid, then a ceramide cream as the final layer.
Many creams already contain both. Check the ingredient list: ceramides should appear before preservatives.
On the outer layer of the skin
This layer retains water and filters what enters. When it malfunctions, active ingredients penetrate too quickly, the skin tingles, and each new product is tolerated less well than the previous one.
Ceramides directly contribute to its composition. Squalane, on the other hand, protects it from the outside without being part of it — a difference that matters when the skin is truly damaged.
Hydration, two mechanisms
A humectant draws water to the surface, lipids prevent it from evaporating. Neither squalane nor ceramides fall into the first category.
A hyaluronic acid serum applied to damp skin, before either of them, completely changes the hydration achieved. It's the most useful and most frequently forgotten addition.
Reading a label
For squalane, the list should simply say squalane. Do not confuse it with squalene without an "a," which is an unhydrogenated form that oxidizes quickly.
Ceramides appear as ceramide NP, ceramide AP, ceramide EOP. A formula that combines several of these, with cholesterol and fatty acids, closely resembles the skin's actual composition.
Storage
Squalane can be stored for years without special precautions. Creams with ceramides follow the usual shelf life of an emulsion: six to twelve months after opening.
A cream that changes smell or texture has gone bad. That's the only test you need.
What neither does
Neither acts on established wrinkles or spots. They are comfort and repair treatments, which is already a lot, but they do not transform the skin.
Neither protects against radiation. Daily sun protection remains essential.
Integrating them into a routine
A short routine is more sustainable than a complete one. A gentle cleanser, a product that provides water, a fat, sun protection during the day: four steps are enough.
Formulas that combine several of these functions simplify things further. A cream containing both squalane and ceramides covers two steps in one, without losing anything.
What skin type for what product
An oily skin type will prefer a light gel-cream; a dry skin type will prefer a rich texture applied morning and evening. The principle does not change, only the thickness varies.
Skin that reacts to everything requires a different approach: fewer products, simple formulas, and two weeks of observation before adding anything new.
Irritating ingredients to avoid
Essential oils, added fragrances, and alcohol at the top of the list are the most common irritants in this type of formula. None of them contribute anything here.
A simple formula remains the best choice. The shorter the list, the easier it is to identify what works or doesn't when a reaction occurs.
Recognizing lipid-deficient skin
It feels tight after cleansing, marks with the slightest friction, and tolerates products it previously accepted less and less. These three signs often go together.
Oily skin can also be lipid-deficient: producing sebum is not the same as having an intact outer layer. This confusion leads to choosing drying treatments that worsen the situation.
What damages the outer layer
Overly harsh foaming cleansers, very hot water, dry cold, and the accumulation of exfoliating active ingredients. These four factors explain the majority of skins that become reactive for no apparent reason.
Removing the cause produces more results than adding a reparative treatment on top. This is the logical order, and it's the one we follow least often.
One final remark
These products are cosmetics and act on the skin's appearance without treating any condition. Skin that remains painful or inflamed despite appropriate care requires dermatological advice.
