Urea: The Moisturizer Your Skin Already Makes

It's not an active ingredient foreign to the epidermis. This small molecule is part of the natural moisturizing factor, the mixture the stratum corneum retains to keep its water. Three Ureas Not to Be Confused

One molecule, three unrelated fields. Type the word into a search engine and you'll get a jumble of cream jars, blood test reports, and bags of fertilizer. Here's a map of the territory, so you'll immediately know if you're in the right place.

The commonality stops at the chemical formula. A percentage read on a cream tube and a value read on a laboratory report cannot be compared, converted, or deduced from each other.

Where urea comes from

Its formula involves only four elements: CH4N2O, or eight atoms in total — one carbon, one oxygen, four hydrogens, and two nitrogens. It is this richness in nitrogen that explains its parallel lives. In the body, the liver produces it at the end of the chain, when it converts ammonia resulting from the breakdown of proteins and amino acids into a stable and highly water-soluble compound. This cycle is even named after it — the urea cycle — and its function is clear: to neutralize ammonia, which cannot accumulate, into a molecule that the kidneys easily excrete. An adult thus eliminates about twenty to thirty grams per day through urine, which is the primary route for dietary nitrogen excretion.

It also holds a special place in the history of science: in 1828, the German chemist Friedrich Wöhler synthesized it in the laboratory from ammonium cyanate. This was the first time an organic compound was manufactured without recourse to living matter, and the idea of a "vital force" reserved for living beings never recovered. This date established synthetic organic chemistry.

Today's industrial production is based on the Bosch-Meiser process, patented in 1922: ammonia reacts with carbon dioxide under a pressure of about 150 bar, which first yields ammonium carbamate, which then dehydrates into urea and water. The carbon dioxide used is generally that captured upstream from the unit that produces ammonia — recycled carbon on-site rather than released. The quality intended for cosmetic products follows this same synthesis pathway, or uses biotechnology: no animal harvesting is involved, and the molecule obtained is strictly identical to what the skin produces.

From a regulatory perspective, it is identified by two stable identifiers — the INCI code Urea and the CAS number 57-13-6 — supplemented by an entry in the European CosIng inventory, under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products. These, and not packaging promises, are what allow verifying that a product actually contains the molecule discussed on this page.

The urea cycle, in four steps
  1. Intake. Dietary proteins are broken down into amino acids, the body's only nitrogen source.
  2. Degradation. Unused amino acids release their nitrogen as ammonia, a compound the body cannot allow to accumulate.
  3. Conversion. The liver combines ammonia and carbon dioxide into urea: an energy-costly operation that makes nitrogen transportable in the blood.
  4. Elimination. The kidneys filter this blood urea and excrete it in the urine. This journey, and nothing else, is what a medical biology test measures.

A small fraction, however, does not take the renal route: it joins sweat and deposits in the stratum corneum, where it becomes a component of the natural moisturizing factor. It is there — and only there — that the cosmetic story begins.

What urea does in the stratum corneum

The stratum corneum is not just a simple waterproof barrier: each corneocyte contains a mixture of small molecules that are very water-hungry — amino acids, lactic acid, PCA, and urea — which dermatologists group under the name natural moisturizing factor. This mixture acts like a microscopic sponge: it captures water and holds it inside the skin, which maintains its suppleness even when the ambient air is dry (Rawlings & Harding, Dermatologic Therapy, 2004).

On dry skin, this reservoir of urea and amino acids is depleted. The result is visible and palpable: dull complexion, a feeling of tightness after showering, rough texture on shins, elbows, and heels. Applying a cream rich in humectants is like replenishing the sponge where there isn't enough — and urea has the advantage of being exactly the molecule the skin was already using.

At low concentrations, urea simply binds water. The higher the concentration, the more it softens the stack of dead surface cells: this is what gives the "smoothed heel" effect of highly concentrated balms. Hence the importance of choosing the right concentration for the area, rather than aiming for the highest percentage.

Two reflexes for reading urea content. First, the unit: values displayed on a finished product are expressed as a percentage of the total formula, never in grams — a "10%" on a 200ml tube is not comparable to a "10%" on a 50ml pot in absolute quantity, but is perfectly comparable in terms of perceived intensity. Second, the placement of the mention Urea in the INCI list: if cited before the first preservative, the content is generally significant; relegated to the very end of the list, it is mostly a marketing argument. Highly water-soluble, this molecule is almost always found in the aqueous phase of emulsions.

The 3-minute protocol

The window after showering is the most useful of the day: the skin is saturated with water and has not yet started to lose it. Here, minute by minute, is how we recommend using a urea cream.

Out of the shower. Pat dry with a towel without rubbing. The skin should remain slightly damp, never completely dry: this surface water is the humectant's fuel.

Urea cream 5-10% on the body. A dollop per limb, on still damp skin, working upwards from ankles to thighs. Double the dose on shins, the area poorest in sebum.
3 min
Sealing. 3 to 4 drops of prickly pear oil warmed between the palms, applied last to the most uncomfortable areas. The order matters: oil after cream, never the other way around.
In the evening
Targeted heel care. 20-30% balm in a thick layer in the evening, on heels and soles of feet, then cotton socks until absorbed. Feet can tolerate concentrations that the face would not.

Four mistakes that cancel the benefit

  • Applying to perfectly dry skin. A humectant needs available water. On skin that has been wiped for twenty minutes in a heated room, it finds little.
  • Transferring a "body" concentration to the face. A 20% balm designed for heels has no place on the cheeks: facial skin is much thinner, and comfort is achieved at much lower concentrations.
  • Combining with an acid exfoliant on the same evening. At high concentrations, it is better to alternate evenings rather than layering.
  • Forgetting the occlusive layer. Without oil or balm on top, the captured water eventually evaporates, especially in winter.

On damaged, irritated skin or skin with lesions, the advice of a healthcare professional takes precedence over any cosmetic routine.

Urea in fields and stables

Outside the bathroom, the same molecule has a far more massive career: it is the world's leading nitrogen fertilizer. Its richness in nitrogen — 46% of its mass, a record among common solid fertilizers — explains this success, as does its ease of transport and immediate dissolution in irrigation water. Spread in the field, it degrades under the action of a soil enzyme, urease, which releases nitrogen usable by the plant and carbon dioxide.

Second agricultural use: ruminant feed. Urea serves as a non-protein nitrogen source. The rumen flora degrades it into ammonia, which it reassembles into microbial proteins then digested by the animal — provided there is sufficient fermentable energy available, otherwise the nitrogen is lost. This is precisely what the PDI and PDIE nitrogen value systems established by INRAE quantify, which measure truly digestible proteins in the intestine rather than crude ingested nitrogen. A poorly managed urea solution in a ration also remains a classic cause of livestock accidents: here again, the dose is everything.

Frequently asked questions about cosmetic urea

What active ingredients to combine urea with?

Prickly pear oil as a final layer to limit evaporation, vegetable glycerin as a second humectant, ceramides for the skin barrier: this is the comfort quartet for dry skin. Always apply from thinnest to richest.

Is urea of animal origin?

No. The urea in modern cosmetics is obtained by synthesis or biotechnology, and its molecule is identical to that naturally present in the skin. No animal origin is involved.

What is the difference between 5% and 20% urea?

Up to 10%, the effect is mainly moisturizing and softening: this is the range for face creams (2 to 5%) and body creams (5 to 10%). Beyond that, the action focuses more on the appearance of very thick areas — elbows, knees, heels — with balms at 10-20%, or even 20-30% reserved for the feet.

Is urea suitable for sensitive skin?

At low concentrations, urea is generally well tolerated: it is a native component of the skin, usually well tolerated. Reactive skin types start with 2 to 3%, applied in the evening, and first test in the crook of the elbow for 48 hours.

Can urea be used all year round?

Yes, by adapting the texture: a fluid milk at 5% is enough in summer, a richer cream or balm takes over when heating and cold dry out the air, a period when tightness returns most quickly.

Does a urea cream replace an exfoliant?

These are not the same actions. An exfoliant mechanically removes surface cells at once; a urea cream softens the cellular accumulation over applications, without scrubbing. For rough elbows or heels, a 10-20% cream is the regular action, with exfoliation remaining occasional — and never on the same evening at high concentrations.
