This is the basic combination of a routine that repairs. Squalane softens and seals, ceramides fill a deficit in the skin's structure. Neither is demanding, which makes them suitable for daily use without reservation.
Key points
- Order: Squalane first, then ceramide cream.
- Frequency: Morning and evening, every day.
- Before: A humectant on damp skin.
- Amount: Two drops of squalane for the entire face.
- In the morning: Sunscreen on top.
Why this combination works
Ceramides are lipids naturally present in the outer layer of the skin, where they ensure cohesion between cells. Adding them fills a real deficit when age, cold, or harsh cleansers have reduced their quantity.
Squalane, on the other hand, is not part of this structure. It is a neutral emollient that softens the surface and limits evaporation — a different, and complementary, role.
Together, they provide repair and comfort. It's a simple routine, without demanding active ingredients, and its simplicity is what makes it sustainable.
Order of application
Squalane first, being more fluid, then the ceramide cream. The lighter product always goes before the richer one, regardless of the routine.
If your cream already contains squalane — which is common — a single product is enough. In that case, check that ceramides are listed before preservatives in the ingredients list.
The step that determines the result
Neither squalane nor ceramides provide water. They retain it, which presupposes there is water to retain.
A hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin, before both, completely changes the hydration achieved. It's the most cost-effective addition to this routine, and the one often forgotten when focusing on oils.
Alternatively, simply apply to skin that is still supple after cleansing. The principle is the same and it costs nothing.
On damaged skin
Skin that feels tight, red, and reactive to everything often has a compromised outer layer. This combination is then exactly what is needed, and it yields results in a few days.
Stop active ingredients until the situation improves. Two weeks of this routine alone are usually sufficient, and then one can resume on a healthy basis.
According to your skin type
Dry skin: A rich ceramide cream, morning and evening, with squalane underneath.
Oily skin: A ceramide gel-cream, which exists and is sufficient.
Combination skin: Squalane everywhere, the cream more generously where it feels tight.
Sensitive skin: The ideal combination, neither being demanding.
Combining them with an active ingredient
This is even their best use. A retinol, an acid, or vitamin C are applied first, on clean skin, and this routine then seals it in.
The neutrality of squalane is important here: it does not introduce any compounds likely to interact with a demanding active ingredient. This is what distinguishes it from a rich vegetable oil.
Reading labels
Squalane appears under this name only. Be careful with squalene without an "a," an unhydrogenated form that oxidizes quickly and is not as beneficial.
Ceramides appear as ceramide NP, ceramide AP, or ceramide EOP. A formula that combines several, with cholesterol and fatty acids, more closely resembles the skin's actual composition.
Preservation
Squalane lasts for years without special precautions. A ceramide cream follows the lifespan of an emulsion: six to twelve months after opening.
Close tightly and avoid open jars that can be contaminated by fingers. A tube or pump preserves better than a jar.
What this routine does not do
It does not exfoliate, does not act on spots, and does not erase any wrinkles. It repairs and softens, which is its entire role.
It does not protect from the sun. Daily sun protection remains essential, and it has a greater effect on the skin's appearance than any treatment on this page.
One last point
These products are cosmetics and improve skin comfort without treating any conditions. Skin that remains inflamed despite stopping active ingredients requires dermatological advice.
Squalane builds nothing
It occupies the space between cells without being part of the structure; ceramides, however, are precisely these lipids. A ceramide night cream provides the material, and squalane can then be applied on top to soften the finish.
