Squalane or Shea Butter: Which One for Your Skin?

They are entirely different, starting with their texture. Squalane is a very light molecule that disappears in two minutes; shea butter is a thick, fatty substance that remains on the surface. The choice lies here, much more than in the composition.

Two totally opposite products

Criteria Squalane Shea Butter
Nature single molecule vegetable fat
Texture very light thick, occlusive
Penetration fast slow
Common Use face body, dry areas
Composition pure, neutral fatty acids, unsaponifiables
Tolerance excellent good

Squalane, a molecule and nothing more

Squalane is obtained from olive or sugarcane oil, then hydrogenated to become stable. It is a pure molecule, without odor or color, that brings no active ingredients.

Its texture is remarkably light: it penetrates quickly and leaves no film. This makes it a facial treatment that can be used even on oily skin.

What shea butter is

Shea butter is extracted from the nuts of Vitellaria paradoxa, a tree native to West Africa. It is solid at room temperature and melts on contact with the skin.

Its composition is rich in oleic acid and stearic acid, with a fraction of unsaponifiables. Shea butter intensely nourishes and forms a layer that significantly limits evaporation.

This occlusiveness is its advantage on very dry areas, and its limitation on the face: applied pure, it can feel heavy and bother combination or oily skin.

The right product depending on the area

Face, normal to oily skin: squalane, without hesitation.

Dry areas — elbows, heels, chapped hands: shea butter, more effective.

Very dry skin in winter: shea butter on the body, squalane on the face.

Alongside a demanding active ingredient: squalane, whose neutrality avoids any interaction.

Shea butter on the face

It's possible, but with method. A very small amount, warmed between the fingers, only on dry areas — never in a thick layer over the entire face.

For oily skin, it's better to avoid it and prefer a lighter texture. Shea butter performs best where the skin is genuinely rough.

Choosing your shea butter wisely

Unrefined is preferable: it then retains its ivory color and characteristic, slightly smoky odor. A perfectly white and odorless butter has been refined, which removes some of its unsaponifiables.

The ingredient list should be a single line: Butyrospermum parkii butter. Any added ingredients dilute the product without improving it.

Choosing your squalane wisely

The list should be limited to squalane. Check the stated origin — olive or sugarcane — if that is important to you.

Do not confuse it with squalene without an "a," which is an unhydrogenated form that oxidizes quickly. One letter changes the product's stability.

Hydration, a clarification

Neither is a moisturizing treatment in the strict sense. These fatty substances retain the skin's water; they do not provide it.

Apply to damp skin, or after a product that provides water. Shea butter applied to perfectly dry skin traps dryness instead of correcting it.

Can the two be layered?

On the body in winter, it works well: squalane first, then shea butter on top for the roughest areas.

On the face, it's rarely useful. Only one of the two, chosen according to your skin, produces more than an uncontrolled layering.

How long to keep them

Squalane can be stored for years without precautions. Shea butter lasts one to two years, away from heat, in a tightly closed jar.

If it becomes grainy, it is not a defect: it is recrystallization due to temperature variations. Simply warm it between your hands.

Limitations to be aware of

Neither acts on established wrinkles, spots, or deep texture. These are comfort treatments, and they fulfill this role without exceeding it.

Neither protects from radiation, despite what is sometimes read about the natural SPF of shea butter. Daily sun protection remains essential.

When to consult

These products are cosmetics and improve skin comfort without treating conditions. Deep chapping or persistent dryness despite appropriate care warrant medical advice.
