Ceramides: Skin Barrier & Repair
Lipid building blocks naturally present in the skin: on the face and body, they seal in moisture and help maintain a healthy and balanced skin barrier. Against external aggressions and dryness, they are allies for comfort. At NOPAL LIFE, they extend the nourishing action of prickly pear seed oil.

What is a ceramide?
They are compounds naturally present on the surface of the epidermis. With cholesterol and fatty acids, they form the "cement" that connects cells and constitutes the skin barrier — the one that retains water inside and protects against external aggressions. In cosmetics, they are reproduced identically through plant biotechnology: the skin recognizes and integrates them.
When it becomes depleted — with age, cold, or overly harsh cleansing — it weakens: the complexion feels tight, loses water, and becomes more sensitive. Rebuilding them helps to restore a lasting balance, day after day.
The composition of the lipid cement
Average mass proportions in the stratum corneum. Indicative values.
They are therefore the main constituent: hence their key place among beauty active ingredients.
The main ceramide families in cosmetics
Not all of them play the same role. Here are the three forms most commonly found in skincare formulas.
| INCI Name | What it provides |
|---|---|
| Ceramide NP | The most abundant of all: it restructures and helps maintain hydration. |
| Ceramide AP | Supports the cohesion and natural renewal of the surface. |
| Ceramide EOP | Connects the layers and locks everything in. |
In a well-developed formula, they are combined with cholesterol and other fatty substances, in proportions similar to their own: it is this trio, rather than each isolated ingredient, that makes them fully effective in cosmetics.
In short
Cosmetic benefits
Cosmetic use and documented interest; not a promise of efficacy nor medical advice.
Strengthened barrier
They represent about half of this intercellular matrix — enough to help restore a weakened barrier.
Locked-in hydration
Help limit water loss and maintain hydration at the heart of the epidermis.
Lasting comfort
Help the skin regain suppleness and comfort, day after day.
Anti-aging support
A healthy barrier means a smoother-looking complexion that is more resistant to time.
Why ceramides at NOPAL LIFE
With age and aggressions, this internal mortar becomes depleted — skin feels tight and fragile. They fill these breaches, while prickly pear seed oil, rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E, nourishes and protects the surface. The restructuring duo of our clean beauty philosophy.

Frequently asked questions about ceramides
What exactly are ceramides?
Naturally present in the stratum corneum, they form — with cholesterol and fatty acids — the "cement" that retains water and protects against aggressions. In cosmetics, they are reproduced identically.
For which skin types are they recommended?
Dry, mature, compromised skin, or skin with a damaged protective film (tightness, discomfort, increased sensitivity). Normal skin also benefits from them preventatively.
Can they be used daily?
Yes — they are natural constituents of the skin, perfectly tolerated morning and evening, all year round.
What active ingredients can they be combined with?
Prickly pear (nutrition), squalane (suppleness), glycerin (hydration), panthenol (repair). They also soften routines with retinol or acids.
Are ceramides suitable for the face?
Yes, absolutely. The skin on the face is delicate and exposed: it particularly benefits from ceramide care, with a light serum in the morning and a richer cream in the evening. The very sensitive eye contour also appreciates these comforting lipids.
Are NOPAL LIFE ceramides of natural origin?
We prioritize ceramides identical to those in the skin, obtained through plant biotechnology — without animal-derived ingredients. The skin recognizes them as its own, making them ideal ingredients for clean beauty.
How long does it take to see a difference?
Immediate comfort — less tight skin — is often felt from the first applications. For the appearance and texture of the skin, allow time for a regular routine to settle in, morning and evening.
