Vegetable Glycerin: The Gold Standard Humectant

A small, colorless polyol derived from vegetable oils, vegetable glycerin captures moisture and binds it to the skin upon contact. It is the most documented and universal moisturizing agent available, found in almost all formulas.

A tiny molecule with three hydroxyl groups, glycerin is hygroscopic: each –OH function forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules. This explains its ability to capture ambient moisture and retain it on the surface, regardless of the texture that carries it — gel, serum, cream, or mist.

Where does it really come from

Historically, this compound was a byproduct of soap manufacturing: saponification naturally releases it, a liquid long recovered by steam. Today, the vegetable version we favor is obtained from sunflower or rapeseed oils, by hydrolysis or transesterification, without using animal materials.

Two points are important to us: a bio-sourced and traceable origin, and a responsible supply chain — hence our preference for sunflower and rapeseed, and failing that, RSPO-certified palm. The result is a clear, almost odorless liquid, whose smoothness remains identical from one batch to another: a reliable foundation, year after year.

Glycerin compared to other water-binding agents

NOPAL LIFE formulation benchmarks: the smaller the molecule, the deeper it penetrates; the higher the concentration, the more the feel changes.

Humectant INCI Name Molecular Weight Usual Dosage Feel
Glycerin Glycerin ≈ 92 g/mol 3–10 % Melting, sticky beyond 10%
Hyaluronic Acid Sodium Hyaluronate 10 kDa to 1.5 MDa 0.1–2 % Fresh, flexible film
Urea Urea ≈ 60 g/mol 2–10% Melting, smooth feel
Propanediol Propanediol ≈ 76 g/mol 2–5% Dry, non-sticky
Betaine Betaine ≈ 117 g/mol 1–5% Soft, velvety

NOPAL Insight: glycerin remains the most versatile and best-tolerated ingredient, but its texture becomes noticeably heavy above 10%. Our formulas calibrate it around 5%, then relay moisture retention to prickly pear seed oil, which seals the surface without weighing it down.

What it brings to the skin

Observed usage properties in cosmetic formulation.

It captures moisture

Through its hydrogen bonds, it continuously draws water molecules from the ambient air and underlying layers to the epidermis.

It locks in hydration

On the surface, it forms a light film that slows down evaporation (transepidermal water loss, or TEWL) and keeps the skin supple for longer.

It preserves comfort

A supple stratum corneum helps preserve the smooth appearance and comfort of the skin barrier, especially on tight-feeling faces.

It enhances texture

A versatile formulating agent, it improves the slip, softness, and spreadability of all skincare textures.

How we use it

Vegetable glycerin is the foundation of every NOPAL LIFE formula. Its ability to capture and retain moisture makes it our go-to active ingredient, which we gladly combine with prickly pear seed oil: the former draws water deep into the skin, while the latter seals and nourishes. A tandem at the heart of our clean beauty approach, calibrated to remain light on the complexion.

The gesture that makes all the difference

For leave-on use, we generally aim for a light veil of around 2 to 3%, daily use around 5%, and up to 8% for very dehydrated skin in a rich formula. The rest comes down to a timing detail.

60-Second Protocol

Apply your serum or gel within 60 seconds of cleansing, on a still slightly damp face: the active ingredient then locks in existing moisture rather than drawing it from deeper layers. Then seal with a few drops of prickly pear seed oil or a cream. This short delay makes all the difference between plumped skin and a feeling of tightness at the end of the day.

Composition & Benefits

In the INCI list, the name Glycerin moves to the top as soon as its proportion exceeds 1%. A great advantage: it blends well with rich creams and fluid gels, and it hydrates without occlusive effect.

Indications & Precautions

Prefer for skin that feels tight or looks dull. Simple precautions: do not apply pure and respect the recommended concentration to maintain a pleasant feel.

Frequently asked questions

Vegetable or animal: what's the difference?

The vegetable version is extracted from sunflower or rapeseed oils by hydrolysis or transesterification; the animal version comes from animal fats. The resulting molecule (glycerol, INCI Glycerin) is chemically identical and its humectant properties are the same. NOPAL LIFE only uses glycerin of vegetable origin, in accordance with its clean beauty commitments.

Can it be applied pure to the skin?

Not recommended. Pure glycerin is very concentrated and can, if the ambient air is very dry, draw moisture from the deeper layers to the surface — hence a paradoxical feeling of dryness. Prefer a dilution of 3 to 10% in a complete formula, as in our skincare products.

What percentage in a finished formula?

In practice, between 1% and 10%. Around 3 to 5%, an excellent balance is achieved between capturing power and a pleasant feel, without stickiness. Above 10%, the texture becomes tacky — see our concentration guidelines above.

Is it compatible with all active ingredients?

Yes, that's one of its greatest strengths. Glycerin is a universal ingredient, compatible with other humectants (hyaluronic acid), soothing active ingredients (aloe vera, centella), plant lipids and emulsifiers. No known incompatibilities in standard formulations.
