This active ingredient in brief
Composition: what makes this active ingredient unique
It's all in the profile. That of prickly pear seeds is one of the most singular in natural cosmetics, and it explains its skin benefits.
Essential fatty acids: a profile dominated by linoleic acid
About 60% linoleic acid (omega-6), supplemented by oleic acid (omega-9): a dominant profile of essential lipids similar to those naturally present in the epidermis. This affinity nourishes the skin, helps preserve its suppleness, and contributes to the comfort of dry or fragile epidermises.
Vitamin E and plant sterols
Its tocopherol content (natural vitamin E) is among the highest of plant fats: around 800 to 1,000 mg/kg according to published analyses, with a largely dominant γ-tocopherol, compared to about 600 mg/kg for argan. Its plant sterols reach nearly 10 g/kg (about 1%), a rare level among cosmetic oils. These molecules, known for their protective action against oxidative stress, help preserve the epidermis from its visible effects – one of the primary causes of signs of aging.
What the dry touch changes daily
Its fine texture penetrates in a few minutes without leaving a greasy film. In practice: it can be used morning and evening under a cream or makeup, and this dry finish makes it pleasant even on combination areas. Generally classified as non-comedogenic (index 0 on usual scales, to be confirmed by batch analysis), it does not clog pores. The only precaution: rich in unsaturated fatty acids, it remains sensitive to oxidation — store it in an opaque bottle, away from light and heat, and use it within 6 to 12 months after opening.
Prickly pear, argan, jojoba: the comparison
Three precious oils often weighed against each other. What sets prickly pear apart: its record concentration of vitamin E and its high content of linoleic acid, for a touch that remains dry.
| Criterion | Prickly Pear | Argan | Jojoba |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linoleic acid (omega-6) | ~ 60% | ~ 34% | Traces (liquid wax) |
| Tocopherols (vitamin E) | 800–1,000 mg/kg | ~ 600 mg/kg | Low |
| Feel | Dry, fast-absorbing | Fine, slightly nourishing | Dry, sebum-mimetic |
| Comedogenicity (index 0–5) | 0 to 1 | 0 | 0 to 2 |
| Signature asset | Record vitamin E, radiance, suppleness | Versatile nutrition | Balance, close to sebum |
Orders of magnitude from published analyses; values vary depending on origin, harvest, and pressing.
Benefits of prickly pear oil for the skin
Cosmetic use and documented interest; neither promise of effectiveness nor medical advice.
Among the most sought-after virtues in cosmetics, four systematically recur. All stem from the profile described above: tocopherols, essential lipids, and a dry feel.
Helps preserve a youthful appearance
Its rare richness in tocopherols and plant sterols, with recognized protective properties, helps maintain a firm and supple appearance and reduce the appearance of signs of aging.
Radiant complexion
Its natural protective compounds help revive the luminosity of dull complexions and even out skin texture.
Nutrition and comfort for dry skin
Its essential lipids provide long-lasting nourishment to the upper layers of the epidermis and true comfort to dry, uncomfortable, or cold-damaged skin.
A dry finish, even for combination skin
It penetrates quickly without leaving a greasy film — a rare quality for such a rich active ingredient, making it comfortable on combination to oily areas.
Origin: from desert plant to bottle
The ingredient is derived from the fruit of the prickly pear, a cactus that thrives in the arid lands of the Mediterranean basin and North Africa. Where almost nothing else grows, the plant concentrates water, pigments, and nutrients: it is this resistance to the desert that gives it all its richness.
For us, origin is not a marketing argument: our production comes from a clean supply chain in Algeria, from the field to the bottle. This end-to-end traceability distinguishes our signature active ingredient from anonymous market references.
The fruits are harvested at maturity, their tiny seeds separated then cold-pressed, without solvents or excessive heat, to preserve fragile tocopherols and fatty acids. This delicate extraction explains its value: it takes nearly a ton of fruit to obtain just one liter.
Pure, organic, cold-pressed: how to choose it well
Not all references are equal. A few simple criteria can help you recognize it and avoid disappointment.
100% pure and virgin
A pure version lists only one name on its label (the INCI), that of prickly pear oil. Beware of mixtures diluted with less noble oils, often sold at the same price.
Certified organic
An organic version guarantees cultivation without synthetic pesticides. Look for a recognized certification like COSMOS or Ecocert, a guarantee of demanding specifications.
First cold-pressed
Cold pressing preserves tocopherols and fatty substances. A golden to amber color, a slightly vegetal smell, and a traced origin are excellent indicators.
The right price
A true virgin oil is rarely found for less than €10 to €15 for 10 ml. A significantly lower price almost always indicates adulteration or a simple flower macerate, far from the profile of a true cold pressing.
Why this active ingredient is our signature
It is our founding obsession. The seeds contain only about 5% oil: this rarity makes it one of the most precious active ingredients in natural cosmetics. Born from arid lands, it transforms aridity into skin richness — exactly the NOPAL LIFE spirit.

Frequently asked questions about prickly pear oil
Why is this active ingredient so precious?
Each fruit contains only 150 to 300 tiny seeds, which themselves are very low in oil, and cold extraction is delicate. This rarity, combined with its exceptional richness in tocopherols, explains its status as an exceptional active ingredient.
Is it suitable for oily or combination skin?
Yes: despite its richness, it has a dry touch, penetrates quickly and leaves no greasy film. Generally classified as non-comedogenic, it is suitable for all skin types, including combination to oily skin — apply a very small amount, 2 to 3 drops are sufficient.
What is the difference with argan oil?
Both nourish, but it is significantly richer in vitamin E — approximately 1.3 to 1.7 times more tocopherols according to analyses (800 to 1,000 mg/kg compared to nearly 600 for argan) — and more geared towards signs of aging. Argan remains an excellent option for daily nourishment.
How to recognize good quality?
Virgin, first cold pressing, certified and ideally from a traceable origin. Its golden color and slightly vegetal scent are good indicators.
How to use prickly pear seed oil?
A few drops are enough: warm them between your palms and press onto your face, preferably in the evening, or in the morning under your cream. To go further, consult our detailed instructions for use.
How long does it take for the effects to be visible?
The feeling of comfort and suppleness is felt from the very first applications. For skin radiance and the appearance of signs of aging, allow 4 to 8 weeks of regular use — the time for one to two epidermal renewal cycles, each approximately 28 days. Regularity matters more than the quantity applied.
Can it be used on hair?
Yes: in very small quantities on the ends, it helps to tame and enhance the appearance of dry hair. Reserve this use for occasional care, separate from your facial routine.
Where can I get a quality one?
Choose a pure, certified, and traceable version. Our signature active ingredient, from a dedicated supply chain in Algeria, is found in the house's signature skincare products.
