How the barrier and blood vessels interact

Where dry skin comes from
Before treating redness, it is important to understand why the skin is dry—the two are linked, and the latter maintains the former.
Dryness is due to two distinct deficiencies. A lack of water in the stratum corneum, called dehydration, which is a temporary state. And a lack of lipids, which defines dry skin as a type and cannot be corrected—it can only be compensated for.
These lipids have two sources. The sebaceous glands produce sebum, which forms the surface film; their density varies greatly depending on the facial areas, and it is low on the cheeks, lip contour, and eye contour—precisely the areas that redden first. The intercellular lipids—ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids—form the cement between the corneocytes.

The skin barrier no longer plays its role as a filter, the skin becomes reactive, and redness appears. Dryness is therefore not separate from redness: it is most often the cause.
Three factors aggravate this process. Natural moisturizing factors—amino acids, urea, lactate contained in corneocytes—are water-soluble and dissolve when washed: too frequent cleansing removes them. Age gradually reduces sebum and lipid production. And dry air, below 40% relative humidity, accelerates evaporation.

Eczema and atopic dermatitis: when it's no longer cosmetic
A portion of persistent dry redness is due to a dermatological condition, and confusion can lead to months of delay.
Atopic dermatitis—atopic eczema—combines marked dryness, red patches with poorly defined outlines, and especially itching. This last symptom is the most distinguishing: simply dry skin feels tight, while atopic skin itches.
It evolves in flare-ups, on characteristic areas—elbow and knee creases, neck, eyelids, hands—and is often accompanied by a personal or family allergic history: asthma, rhinitis, food allergy.
Contact dermatitis, on the other hand, shows clear outlines that follow the application area of a product. This is a valuable clue: redness that stops at the edge of a collar or the area where you apply a cream points to its culprit.
In both cases, emollients are still useful but not sufficient. An inflammatory flare-up requires prescribed treatment, and delaying consultation by multiplying comfort creams often worsens the situation rather than improving it.
Practical benchmark: symptoms that persist beyond three weeks despite a simplified routine, or that itch to the point of disturbing sleep, warrant dermatological advice.
Emergency routine for seventy-two hours
In the morning, rinse with lukewarm water, apply an unscented cream, then SPF 50+ if you go out. In the evening, cleanse for twenty seconds with a gentle milk or gel, rinse, and reapply the same cream. Temporarily remove acidic vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, retinol, essential oils, and scrubs.
