Argan oil already contains vitamin E. The comparison is therefore between a complete product and one of its components - and that's what makes it instructive.

Argan oil in detail
Argan oil is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree, a tree from southwestern Morocco. The fruits are harvested by hand, and a large part of the industry remains artisanal.
Its composition is rich in oleic acid and linoleic acid, with a notable fraction of natural vitamin E. It is this content that explains a good part of its reputation.
This vegetable oil nourishes, softens, and limits evaporation. Its moderately rich texture is suitable for most skin types, and its application requires no special precautions.
Argan oil is also one of the most versatile: face, body, hands, hair ends. A single bottle covers these uses, which significantly improves its value for money.
What makes this oil are its unsaturated fatty acids - oleic and linoleic - and its unsaponifiable fraction, rich in tocopherols. It is this that limits the oxidation of skin lipids, and which explains some of its properties on exposed skin.
It is also credited with a soothing action, useful for reactive skin. This is the difference with isolated vitamin E: it provides a set of compounds, not a single molecule.
Vitamin E in detail
Vitamin E - tocopherol in ingredient lists - is a fat-soluble antioxidant. It neutralizes some of the free radicals produced by exposure and pollution.
Its fat-soluble nature distinguishes it from vitamin C, which is water-soluble: vitamin E is found in the fatty fraction of the skin, where the other cannot reach.
It also serves to stabilize oily formulas by slowing down their oxidation. That's why it's found in almost all commercial oils, including those that don't naturally contain it.
Why the question is poorly posed
Choosing between argan oil and vitamin E is like choosing between a dish and one of its ingredients. Vegetable oil provides tocopherol, plus the fatty acids that make it interesting.
Isolated vitamin E, on the other hand, is practically not sold alone in cosmetics. It is incorporated into creams and serums, where it plays a discreet and useful role.
The real question is therefore: do you want an oil, or a product that contains an antioxidant? These are two formats, not two competing ingredients.
When argan oil is sufficient
For dry or normal skin, as a last layer, it alone provides nourishing function and tocopherol. This is the simplest format.
Two to three drops for the entire face, on damp skin, warmed between the palms and pressed rather than spread. Application takes ten seconds.
When to look for vitamin E elsewhere
For oily skin that cannot tolerate oils, a light serum or cream containing tocopherol does the same antioxidant work without the texture.
In an already busy routine, too: adding an oil is not always desirable, whereas a tocopherol present in the cream does not change habits.
Other tocopherol-rich oils
Sunflower, prickly pear, jojoba also contain it. Argan oil does not have a monopoly, even if its content is good and its texture is particularly pleasant.
The choice between these vegetable oils is based more on texture and price than on composition. They are largely equivalent in this function.
For hair
Argan oil is firmly established here: a drop on the ends, damp hair, after washing. For an oil bath before shampooing, allow one hour of application.
A vitamin E serum does not have this use. This is a practical advantage of vegetable oil, and it counts in the calculation.
How to choose a good argan oil
First cold pressed, undeaodorized, in a dark bottle. Look for Argania spinosa kernel oil and nothing else. A list that lengthens is a list that cuts.
Cosmetic pressing is done on raw kernels. A roasted hazelnut scent therefore betrays a bottle intended for cooking.
It keeps for twelve to eighteen months after opening, away from light. A pungent odor indicates an oxidized oil that has lost its tocopherol.
What neither does
Neither acts on established wrinkles or spots. These are comfort and protection products, not transformative active ingredients.
Neither replaces sunscreen. An antioxidant complements protection, it never replaces it - the confusion is frequent and costly. Daily sun protection remains essential.
Argan oil fatty acids
Linoleic acid, an omega-6, is an essential fatty acid: the body does not produce it. Oleic acid, on the other hand, is an unsaturated fatty acid that the skin appreciates for its suppleness.
These fatty acids participate in the skin barrier by integrating into the outer layer. This is what tocopherol alone does not do: it protects, it does not nourish.
A vegetable oil therefore provides both functions. An isolated antioxidant covers only one, and this is the main argument in favor of oil.
Free radicals, in practice
Free radicals form under the effect of radiation, pollution, and tobacco. An antioxidant neutralizes some of them, without eliminating them.
It is a real and modest action. It complements sun protection and never replaces it: the first line of defense remains to avoid the formation of these free radicals.
According to skin type
Dry skin: argan oil, two to three drops of oil in the evening.
Oily skin: a light treatment with tocopherol rather than a vegetable oil.
Combination skin: oil on the cheeks, a light cream on the T-zone.
Reactive skin: one source at a time, two weeks of observation.
Application to the skin
A few drops of oil warmed between the palms, pressed onto still supple skin. Application takes ten seconds and is better than a more expensive product used incorrectly.
On the neck and décolleté, same application with a smaller amount. The skin there is thinner and tolerates excess oils poorly.
How much tocopherol remains after a few months?
The tocopherol in a vegetable oil is consumed by protecting itself from oxidation. Its useful fraction therefore decreases over the months, even with the bottle closed.
This is a concrete reason to buy small and finish a bottle. An oil opened for a year no longer provides the same antioxidant benefit, without smelling rancid.
To remember
These products are cosmetics and improve the appearance of the skin without treating any condition. Skin that remains irritated despite stopping products requires dermatological advice.
A whole oil versus a molecule
The comparison pits a whole food against one of its components: argan is a mixture of fatty acids, vitamin E is a molecule it already naturally contains. Choosing therefore means choosing the formula in which it is found, and a face oil with vitamin E makes this explicit.
