Lip Routine: The Right Steps

An effective lip care routine isn't complicated. Here are the steps to adopt, morning and night, to transform your lips and keep them perfect.

The three pillars of a winning routine

Every effective routine is based on three complementary and essential actions:

1. Gentle exfoliation

2. Regular hydration

3. Daily protection

By combining these three steps, you optimize all other care and avoid most common problems.

The skin of the lips has no thick stratum corneum, no sebaceous glands, and no melanin in useful quantities. These three deficiencies explain everything else: it loses its hydration three to four times faster than the face, produces no protective film of its own, and marks in the sun without ever tanning.

Therefore, caring for your lips primarily involves compensating for these absences from the outside. It's not an accidentally fragile area: it is inherently so, and no product changes this fact. Products compensate for it, more or less well and for more or less long.

Complete routine: morning and night

Morning

Step 1: Basic cleansing (30 seconds)

Rinse your lips with lukewarm water. You can very gently use a damp cloth to remove any small dead skin cells accumulated overnight.

Step 2: Balm application (1 minute)

Apply a generous layer of rich balm 5 minutes before your makeup routine. This intensely hydrates and creates a smooth base for lipstick. If you don't wear makeup, simply apply your balm.

Total duration: 2 minutes

Evening

Step 1: Exfoliation (once a week) (3 minutes)

On Monday or Wednesday evening, apply your sugar + honey + oil scrub to your slightly damp lips. Gently massage in circular motions for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.

Step 2: Intensive mask (10 minutes)

After exfoliating (or on evenings without exfoliation), apply a mask: pure honey, or honey + shea butter + a few drops of argan oil. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes while you read or relax.

Step 3: Rich overnight balm (2 minutes)

Gently rinse off the mask with lukewarm water, then apply a generous layer of balm rich in shea and oils. This will nourish and repair while you sleep.

Total duration: 15 to 20 minutes (exfoliation evening), 5 to 10 minutes (other evenings)

Hydration throughout the day

Between morning and evening, hydrate your lips regularly:

  • After each hand wash: 30 seconds after washing your hands, apply a dab of balm to compensate for moisture loss
  • Mid-day: around 12-1 PM, reapply your balm
  • Late afternoon: around 4-5 PM, a final application before evening
  • Before drinking or eating: water and food dilute the moisturizer; reapply afterward
  • Before exposure to cold or sun: always apply a protective balm

Seasonal adjustments

Winter (December-February)

Cold and heating intensify dehydration.

  • Increase frequency of application: 5 to 6 times a day
  • Favor richer, occlusive balms (strong beeswax)
  • Protect your lips from wind with less frequent exfoliation (every 15 days)
  • Evening mask: 3 times a week instead of 2

Spring (March-May)

The transition can dry out lips.

  • Maintain a regular routine: 3 to 4 times a day
  • Exfoliation: once a week
  • Start introducing SPF protection mid-March

Summer (June-August)

Sunlight weakens the skin's supporting fibers and can cause lesions or accelerated aging.

  • Apply a balm with UV index (minimum SPF 30) with each exposure
  • Exfoliation: every 15 days (less frequent, skin is fragile)
  • Intensely hydrate in the evening to repair sun damage
  • Limit saltwater or chlorinated water: rinse immediately and hydrate

Autumn (September-November)

Return to a standard routine.

  • 3 to 4 applications per day
  • Exfoliation: once a week
  • Mask: 2 times a week
  • Gradually increase the richness of the balm as winter approaches

Mistakes to absolutely avoid

1. Licking your lips

This provides temporary hydration, followed by amplified dryness. The enzymes in saliva dry out lips over time.

2. Exfoliating too often

More than once a week weakens the hydrolipidic film. Patience!

3. Using too light a balm

A mass-market stick is not enough. Favor formulas rich in shea and wax.

4. Ignoring cold and sun

Simple unprotected exposure undermines days of routine.

5. Forgetting internal hydration

Drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily. Lips reflect your overall hydration.

Specific cases

If you have very dry lips

Increase masks to 3 times a week. Use a balm in a tube rather than a stick to apply more generously. Hydrate at least 6 times a day.

If you have chapped lips

Temporarily stop exfoliating. Apply a very rich balm (or pure shea butter) 4 to 5 times a day, plus as a mask at night. Continue until the cracks are completely healed.

If you have fine lines

Add a hyaluronic acid serum before your balm (evening). Increase masks. Use an antioxidant oil as a supplement.

If you have acne or lesions around the lips

Cleanse very gently, avoid exfoliation. Consult a dermatologist to prevent worsening.

Chapped lips first require you to stop moistening them. Licking them provides a few seconds of relief then significantly worsens them: saliva evaporates taking away more than it brought, and contains enzymes that attack an already weakened surface.

The dry cold of winter and air conditioning produce the same effect through a different path. In both cases, soothing involves reducing losses rather than a massive intake: a thin product applied often beats a thick layer applied once. If fissures bleed or persist for more than ten days despite regular care, professional medical advice is necessary.

Essential products to have at home

1. A rich daily balm (shea, beeswax)

2. A homemade scrub recipe (sugar, honey, oil)

3. A concentrated mask (pure honey, shea)

4. A nourishing oil (olive, coconut, or argan)

5. An SPF balm (for summer)

Five products are enough to completely transform your routine.

A lip balm is judged by its composition before its promise. Occlusive fats form a protective film that slows down losses; waxes provide hold; vegetable oils soften. A product that only contains the first register protects without softening, which gives the sensation of a layer applied on top without improvement underneath.

Two textures are better than a single versatile one: a fluid one for the day, under makeup and between meals, a denser one for the night, when nothing will remove it. Vitamin E, often present, mainly plays a role in preserving the formula.

In summary

A winning lip routine is simple: exfoliate once a week, hydrate 3 to 6 times a day depending on the season, protect against cold and sun. Adding a mask 2 to 3 times a week amplifies the results. After 2 to 3 weeks of regularity, you will notice a visible transformation: smoother, softer, plumper lips and no discomfort.

Frequently asked questions

How much time per day should I dedicate to my lip routine?

3 to 5 minutes in the morning and 10 to 15 minutes in the evening (exfoliation evening). Other evenings, 3 to 5 minutes. Total: 30 to 45 minutes per week for a visible transformation.

Can I skip exfoliation if I'm in a hurry?

Exfoliation accelerates results, but it's not a big deal to skip it for a week. Return to the regular routine as soon as possible.

What balm is ideal for sleeping?

A very rich balm (tube rather than stick), enriched with shea, wax, and oils. Apply generously without fear; lips only absorb what they need.

Can I do a lip routine if I wear lipstick every day?

Yes, but prepare well: exfoliation + moisturizer 5 minutes before makeup. In the evening, completely remove lipstick before your routine.
