Combining retinol and aloe vera: improving tolerance

This is one of the most useful combinations for anyone starting out with retinol. Aloe vera gel moisturizes and soothes; retinol stimulates cell renewal but can weaken the skin barrier in the first few weeks. When combined properly, they allow for sustained use — and consistency is all that matters with this active ingredient.

The two methods

Method 1, the simplest: separate them. Retinol in the evening on perfectly dry skin, aloe vera gel in the morning. No interactions to manage, and the skin recovers between applications.

Method 2, buffering: aloe first. A thin layer of aloe vera gel, allow to dry completely, then apply retinol. The action is slightly attenuated, and discomfort is significantly reduced. This is the option for very reactive skin and for the first three weeks.

What not to do

Do not apply retinol to skin that is still damp with aloe vera gel. On damp skin, retinol penetrates faster and irritates more. If you are using the buffering method, the gel must be completely dry.

Another common mistake: applying the gel immediately after retinol, within a minute. Wait at least twenty minutes, or postpone the aloe until the morning.

Progression, week by week

Weeks 1 to 3: Retinol every third evening. Aloe vera gel every morning, and on evenings without retinol.

Weeks 4 to 6: Every other evening if no redness persists.

From week 7 onwards: Maintain every other evening. Many skin types have no benefit in going beyond this.

Collagen does not rebuild in three weeks. Skin that feels tight will interrupt treatment before any results are seen: improving tolerance is key to ensuring regularity.

A complete routine

Aloe vera gel combines easily with hyaluronic acid, both being water-based. A morning routine can include aloe gel, hydrating serum, cream, then sunscreen.

On retinol evenings, keep it simple: cleanse, dry thoroughly, apply retinol, and a rich emollient twenty minutes later if the skin feels tight. A vegetable oil is well suited for this role.

Signs to slow down

Redness that persists the next day, a burning sensation upon application, or spreading flaking: these are signs of too rapid adaptation. Revert to every third evening for two weeks.

Peeling skin is not skin that is progressing faster. It is skin whose barrier is overwhelmed.

Limitations

Important note: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid retinoids and consult your doctor before starting any anti-aging routine. These products are cosmetic and have no curative purpose. Daily sun protection is part of the protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I apply aloe before or after retinol?

The simplest is to separate them: retinol in the evening, aloe in the morning. If you use them on the same evening, apply aloe first and allow it to dry completely.

How long should I wait between the two?

At least twenty minutes if you apply aloe after retinol. Before, wait for the gel to dry completely — a few minutes are sufficient.

Does aloe vera cancel out the effect of retinol?

No. Applied beforehand, it slightly attenuates penetration, which is sometimes desired at the beginning. Applied in the morning, it has no effect on the action of retinol.

How long before I see results?

Three to six months of regular use. The first few weeks primarily bring adaptation effects, not results.

The sandwich method, in practice

Aloe vera, retinol, aloe vera: the principle is to encapsulate the active ingredient to cushion its initial application. An aloe vera cream is well suited for the morning layer, which is most exposed to friction and makeup.
