The percentage displayed on an aloe vera gel rarely means what you think it does. A "99%" gel and a "40%" gel can be equally good, and knowing this changes how you choose.
Pure aloe vera, formulated gel: the real difference
Gel taken directly from the leaf is pure aloe vera, and it doesn't keep: forty-eight hours in the refrigerator, no longer. Commercial gels contain a gelling agent, a preservative, and often a humectant. This is a technical necessity, not a trick.
A gel advertised as 99% organic aloe vera therefore contains 99% reconstituted juice, including gelling agent. A 40% gel in a well-constructed base can provide just as much. What you need to look at is the position of "Aloe barbadensis leaf juice" in the list and the absence of alcohol at the top.
How much to apply
A thin layer, the equivalent of a small pea-sized amount for the entire face. The gel should dry in about one minute. If it remains sticky after three minutes, too much was applied — the excess doesn't penetrate, it just sits there.
Two applications per day are sufficient, morning and evening, on clean skin. On areas irritated by the sun or wind, you can reapply during the day without any problem: it's one of the rare products that doesn't accumulate poorly with itself.
According to skin type
Sensitive skin: the gel alone is often sufficient, and this is precisely where it is most useful — it soothes without adding anything that could irritate. Dry skin: the gel followed by a cream or oil on top, otherwise the water provided will evaporate within an hour.
Combination and oily skin: the gel everywhere, without occlusion on the T-zone. Its aqueous texture makes it the best tolerated base for this skin type, where a rich cream can cause problems.
What to apply on top
Aloe vera gel is composed of over ninety-eight percent water. It hydrates the surface and provides an immediate soothing sensation, but its effect lasts only a few hours and stops there if nothing holds it in.
A moisturizing cream is sufficient. For dry skin, two to three drops of vegetable oil work better. It's the next layer that determines the duration, not the amount of gel.
Recognizing a good product
Latin name on the label, juice at the top of the list, no alcohol in the first five ingredients, expiration date after opening. A color that is too green indicates an added dye: natural gel is translucent, slightly yellow.
The gel should be stored in a cool place and used within six to twelve months. If it liquefies or changes color, it has gone bad.
What the dosage doesn't change
No amount will act on established wrinkles, old pigmentation, or the diameter of pores. What aloe vera provides is comfort and surface hydration, and that's already what most people are looking for.
Our aloe vera day cream combines the aqueous phase and the sealing step, which avoids stacking two products. The complete aloe vera sheet on the plant.
What aloe vera provides, and by what mechanism
The gel is made up of over ninety-eight percent water. The rest — polysaccharides, minerals, some amino acids — forms a hydrophilic film that retains this water on the surface for a while. It is a strictly hydrating and soothing agent: it provides water and calms the sensation of discomfort.
The immediate coolness felt comes partly from evaporation: the gel refreshes as it dries. This effect is real but brief. The underlying action, the one that matters for the skin barrier, requires the next layer.
How to apply aloe vera according to your needs
For daily routine: a thin layer morning and evening, on cleansed skin. For targeted use on a heated area: as often as necessary, the product does not overload. As a mask: a thick layer left on for ten minutes then rinsed off, once a week.
First cleanse with a gentle texture, without stripping. This is the condition for the following steps to be effective: a gel applied to skin irritated by too strong a cleanser will not make up for what the cleansing cost.
On which skin types, and for what needs
Sensitive and reactive skin: it is the first-line ingredient, because it brings nothing that can irritate. Blemish-prone skin: its aqueous texture is suitable where creams pose a problem. Dry skin: it is essential to cover it, otherwise the benefit is lost.
The needs it truly covers are surface hydration and comfort. It is effective, verifiable, and it does not replace an active ingredient or sun protection.
What you will find on the labels
"Aloe barbadensis leaf juice" refers to the juice, "leaf juice powder" to a reconstituted powder, "leaf extract" to a more diluted extract. All three are legitimate, but they are not comparable term for term, and an advertised percentage does not say which of the three forms it concerns.
The mention "organic" certifies the cultivation method, not the concentration. A 20% organic aloe vera provides less than an 80% conventional aloe vera, which does not detract from the value of the label in other respects.
How often, over time
Twice a day, every day. It is a maintenance product, not a cure: its action stops when you stop. It is recommended to keep it cool, which prolongs its preservation and makes the sensation more pleasant in summer.
From aloe vera leaf to bottle
The leaf contains three layers: the green skin, a bitter yellow sap rich in aloin, and the translucent gel in the center. Only the gel is of interest in cosmetics; the sap is removed during packaging, as aloin is irritating.
A pure gel extracted at home must therefore be thoroughly rinsed before use, otherwise you will also be applying the sap. This is another reason to prefer a properly prepared commercial product to a homemade extraction.
The benefits of aloe vera, and their measurement
Thanks to its moisturizing properties and its polysaccharide content, aloe vera hydrates the surface and helps soothe temporary irritations. These benefits are those of a comfort treatment: they are felt quickly and are not lasting.
The combination of aloe vera and fatty substances is what prolongs them. An aloe vera moisturizer used alone on dry skin is always disappointing, and this is the most common mistake with this ingredient.
On oily skin, and for anti-aging purposes
For oily skin, apply a small amount of pure gel morning and evening: its aqueous texture is suitable where a cream causes problems, and it doesn't weigh down the complexion. It's one of the rare treatments that behaves well on this skin type without drying it out.
For anti-aging purposes, the contribution is indirect. Well-hydrated skin appears smoother and reflects light better, which reduces dehydration fine lines. For established wrinkles, there's nothing to expect — it's an optical effect, real and limited.
A tip for use that applies to everyone
It is essential to cover. The gel provides water; the next layer decides how long it stays. This simple rule explains most of the difference between those who find aloe vera effective and those who find it useless.

The correct dose cannot be guessed: it depends on the ingredient, its form, and the skin type. This series covers each active ingredient one by one.
