Bakuchiol: what concentration and how many drops

Three to four drops, every evening, from day one. This is the most concrete difference with retinol: bakuchiol requires no ramp-up period.

From 0.5 to 2%, and no more

Serious formulations dose bakuchiol between 0.5 and 2%. The most cited study, published in 2019, focused on a 0.5% concentration and concluded that the results were similar to those of retinol with much better tolerance.

Beyond 2%, the data shows no additional benefit. A bakuchiol serum that does not display its concentration is not disqualified for all that: it is an active ingredient whose useful doses are low, and many brands remain discreet about this figure.

How many drops, and when

Three to four drops for the entire face, in the evening, on clean, dry skin. Morning application is also possible: unlike retinol, bakuchiol is not photosensitizing and tolerates sun exposure.

This dual possibility is a practical advantage. Applying it morning and evening slightly accelerates results without any compromise on tolerance, which is not the case with any retinoid.

Why no ramp-up is necessary

Bakuchiol is extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia. Its plant origin has no relation to vitamin A: the resemblance of effects is functional, not chemical. This is precisely what explains its tolerance.

It does not cause the retinization phase — redness, flaking, discomfort — that makes the first four weeks of retinol so difficult. So, you can start at the final pace, which saves a month.

What can be combined, and at what dose

Hyaluronic acid can be seamlessly integrated and does not count as an additional active ingredient. A ceramide cream over it completes the routine well for dry skin.

An acid on the same evening, however, combines two demands on a barrier that will not tolerate both. Alternate evenings: bakuchiol on some, acid on others.

Storage and selection

Bakuchiol is significantly more stable than retinol. An opaque bottle is sufficient, and twelve months after opening is not a problem. This is a real formulation advantage, which explains its increasing presence in natural ranges.

It is most often found in oil-serums, sometimes in creams. The form changes comfort more than effect; for oily skin, an aqueous serum will be preferred over an oil-based one.

What dosage doesn't change

Eight to twelve weeks to observe a change in texture, longer for the appearance of wrinkles. No concentration shortens this timeframe, which is that of surface renewal.

Our bakuchiol oil-serum contains the active ingredient at a useful concentration, and the bakuchiol sheet details the state of the data.

What the plant is, and where the use comes from

Bakuchiol is a compound extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, a South Asian plant used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Its use in cosmetics is recent: it dates back to the 2010s.

This plant origin has no structural relation to vitamin A. The resemblance of observed effects is functional, and that is precisely what makes the comparison interesting rather than anecdotal.

How to use bakuchiol in a routine

In the evening: cleanse, apply bakuchiol serum to dry skin, then moisturizer. In the morning, the same sequence is possible with sunscreen applied over it. For sensitive skin, its tolerance allows starting directly at a daily rhythm.

It combines easily with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and niacinamide. With an acid, alternate evenings: this is not a matter of bakuchiol tolerance but of cumulative stress on the barrier.

What studies show, and their limitations

The most cited trial was published in 2019 in the British Journal of Dermatology. It compared bakuchiol to retinol in forty-four people over twelve weeks and concluded with similar results and fewer side effects.

Two reading precautions: the sample size is small, and the study focused on a specific product at a specific concentration. This is a solid lead, not a demonstrated equivalence for all products claiming the name.

Side effects, in practice

They are rare and mild: a temporary redness in some people, generally linked to excipients rather than the active ingredient. No documented photosensitization, no contraindications related to sun exposure.

A patch test on the inside of the elbow for two days remains the rule before any first application, as with any new product. This is the only precaution this active ingredient requires.

On which skin type, and for what indication

All, with identical dosages. Sensitive skin benefits most significantly, as it tolerates retinoids poorly. Mature skin finds an anti-aging solution without the adaptation period. Combination skin will prefer an aqueous serum to an oil-serum.

Its antioxidant properties complement the overall effect without being its main argument: what is expected of it concerns texture and the appearance of wrinkles, and this is judged after three months.

The price, and what it covers

A bakuchiol serum costs more than a retinol with similar advertised performance. The raw material is rare: extraction is done from imported seeds, and market volumes remain low compared to those of synthetic vitamin A.

This is no reason to pay any price. What makes the difference between two bottles is on the label: the position of the active ingredient in the list, the quality of the base, and the presence or absence of an emollient that makes application comfortable.

How to judge the result on yourself

Photograph your face at the same time, in the same place, without makeup, every four weeks. This is the only method that avoids the illusion of the daily mirror, where no slow change is ever seen.

Three months of hindsight is enough to decide. If nothing has changed in the photos, this product is not suitable for this skin, and it is better to try something else than to wait for another bottle. This rule applies to all active ingredients, not just this one.

What it does not replace

Neither daily sun protection, which remains the only action addressing the main cause of visible aging. Nor a well-maintained barrier, which conditions the tolerance of everything applied. Nor regularity, which matters more than the choice of bottle.

The series "What concentration, how many drops"

The right dose is not guessed: it depends on the ingredient, its form, and the skin type. This series covers each active ingredient one by one.
