Ceramides are not measured in drops. They come in a cream, rarely in a serum, and what determines their effectiveness is not a quantity but their place in the ingredient list.
Why the question of dosage is misleading
A ceramide is a lipid: it works by inserting itself into the intercellular cement, this material that fills the space between the cells of the superficial layer. This cement is composed of ceramides for half, the rest being cholesterol and free fatty acids.
It is not reconstituted by increasing the dose, but by providing the right types in the right proportions. This is a formulation job, and it cannot be read from a percentage.
Read the label rather than count
Look for “ceramide NP”, “ceramide AP”, “ceramide EOP”. The three letters describe the structure of the molecule, not its quality. What matters is the presence of several different codes in the same formula: the skin uses several types, not just one.
Their position in the first third of the list indicates a useful quantity. Beyond the tenth rank, the contribution becomes symbolic. The word “ceramide” alone, without a code, often refers to a plant extract rich in related compounds — this is not disqualifying, but it cannot be compared term for term.
How much cream to apply
The equivalent of a pea-sized amount for the entire face, morning and evening. Beyond that, the product does not penetrate further: it remains on the surface and gives that impression of a greasy film that is wrongly attributed to the formula.
For dry skin, you can double the dose in the evening. For combination to oily skin, a ceramide gel advantageously replaces cream without losing anything — the barrier repairs just as well under a light texture.
No tolerance threshold
This is the particularity of this family: it requires no ramp-up, no alternation, no precaution. It can be introduced overnight, at any age, on any skin type, including sensitive.
This lack of constraint makes it the best starting point for anyone who has already given up several routines. Strengthening the skin barrier before adding a strong active ingredient avoids the discomfort phase that makes everything stop.
What to put on top, or underneath
Ceramides are applied as the last layer of skincare, before sun protection. An aqueous serum — hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides — is applied before, on clean skin.
The order follows the general rule, from thinnest to thickest. A ceramide cream applied first would prevent water-soluble active ingredients from reaching the surface.
What dosage does not change
Comfort returns in a few days, better tolerance to external aggressions in six to eight weeks. For established wrinkles and spots, there is nothing to expect: ceramides work on sealing, not on appearance.
Our repairing night cream with plant ceramides follows this logic, and the ceramide sheet discusses the barrier structure.
Where ceramides work exactly
In the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis. The cells are stacked like bricks, and the cement that separates them is made of lipids: about half ceramides, the rest being cholesterol and free fatty acids.
When this cement degrades, water escapes and irritants enter. This is the mechanism of dry and uncomfortable skin, and it cannot be corrected by applying any fatty substance to the surface. It requires the lipids that the protective barrier actually uses.
Integrating ceramides according to skin type
Dry and sensitive skin: a rich cream morning and evening, as the last layer. Combination skin: a light cream in the evening, a gel in the morning. Oily skin: a ceramide gel or fluid — oily skin can have a damaged barrier, the two are independent.
This is a point often misunderstood. Skin that shines does not necessarily have a healthy barrier function: sebum and intercellular lipids are two different things, produced by two different mechanisms.
What they soothe, and what they don't do
A restored barrier better withstands cold, wind, and products. Discomfort redness — those that follow a hot shower or too vigorous cleansing — decrease in a few weeks. The sensation of tightness disappears in a few days.
However, no effect on wrinkles, spots, or pores. Ceramides work on the surface's waterproofness. This is essential, measurable, and has nothing to do with a corrective active ingredient.
What else is found in a good formula
Cholesterol and free fatty acids, which complete the physiological trio. Hyaluronic acid or glycerin for water supply. An emollient for texture. These associations make an effective cream, more than just the mention "with ceramides".
The often-cited ratio between the three families of lipids is 3 to 1 to 1, in favor of ceramides. Few brands display it, but the presence of all three in the list is already a good sign.
Over time
A ceramide cream can be used indefinitely, without habituation or plateaus. It is a basic care, to keep when everything else changes. For skin that has already reacted to several routines, it is the best possible starting point.

The correct dose is not to be guessed: it depends on the ingredient, its form, and the skin type. This series covers each active ingredient one by one.
