Lactic Acid: The Gentle Exfoliant That Respects Your Skin

Among skincare acids, lactic acid has a special reputation: that of being the gentlest AHA. Where some active ingredients can be harsh on the skin, lactic acid is often chosen by those who want to smooth skin texture and revive radiance while maintaining comfort. Here's what you need to know.

What is lactic acid?

It is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), from the same family as glycolic acid. It is also known for its origin related to fermentation (it is found naturally, for example, in dairy products). In cosmetics, it is appreciated for two combined qualities, rare in a single active ingredient:

  • a surface renewal action (it helps the skin get rid of dead cells on the surface),
  • a moisturizing dimension, as it is one of the components naturally present in the skin's hydrating film.

What it does for skin appearance

  • Smoother skin texture and a fresher complexion.
  • Revived radiance, with skin appearing "freed" from its dull veil.
  • A feeling of softness, without the discomfort sometimes associated with more powerful exfoliants.

These effects concern the appearance, softness, and radiance of the skin. Lactic acid is a cosmetic skincare active ingredient, not a treatment.

Lactic acid or glycolic acid?

Both are AHAs, but their molecules differ in size:

  • Glycolic: smaller molecule, more "penetrating" action, often chosen for a marked effect.
  • Lactic: larger molecule, more surface-level and gentler action — ideal for beginners or for skin looking for comfort.

👉 To understand the overall logic, see our Exfoliation guide and the Glycolic acid page.

Lactic acid compared to other acids

In the family of exfoliants, each ingredient has its role: salicylic acid primarily targets the pores of combination to oily skin, while hyaluronic acid (which is not an exfoliant) provides hydration. Lactic acid, on the other hand, acts gently on the surface epidermis and supports visible cell renewal, which explains its good reputation among sensitive skin types that do not tolerate more powerful acids.

For what skin type?

Lactic acid is particularly suitable for skin that:

  • wants to gently start using acids,
  • seeks to revive a dull complexion without aggressing it,
  • has skin that lacks comfort and feels tight.

How to incorporate it into your routine

  1. In the evening, on clean skin, 1 to 2 times a week to start.
  2. Hydrate immediately after to maintain comfort.
  3. SPF in the morning: like all renewing acids, it makes the skin more sensitive to the sun.
  4. Space out use if the skin shows signs of discomfort.

Renewing skin without making it fragile is our entire philosophy. Lactic acid fits well into a natural routine where gentle exfoliation is followed by a nourishing treatment like prickly pear seed oil, which supports the comfort of the skin barrier.

Frequently asked questions

Does lactic acid really hydrate? It combines a surface renewal effect with an affinity for the skin's natural moisturizing film — hence its reputation as an exfoliant "that doesn't dry out" the skin.

How often should I use it? 1 to 3 times a week depending on tolerance. No need to do more: regularity is more important than intensity.

Can it be combined with retinal or vitamin C? Preferably at different times, to allow the skin to get used to each active ingredient separately.
