What AHAs Do
Alpha-hydroxy acids are water-soluble and act on the surface. The most common are glycolic acid, which is the most penetrating, and lactic acid, which is milder.
They shed accumulated dead cells, which improves radiance and refines skin texture. Their downside is twofold: they are drying, and they significantly increase sensitivity to radiation.
They shed dead cells by dissolving the cement that holds them together. This is a surface action, and it also explains their effect on the appearance of fine wrinkles: a smooth surface reflects light better.

Safest method: AHA on the evenings you use it, hyaluronic acid every day and every morning.
On the same evening: AHA on clean, dry skin, wait ten minutes, then hyaluronic acid and a cream.
Never reverse the order: a humectant applied beforehand would form a film that would hinder the acid's action on the surface.
Why Hyaluronic Acid After an AHA
Exfoliation causes water loss from the surface. Hyaluronic acid immediately replenishes this, which significantly reduces the feeling of tightness the next day.
However, it does not replenish lipids. If your skin remains rough, add a ceramide cream or a vegetable oil after it.
Progression, Week by Week
Weeks 1 and 2: AHA once a week.
Weeks 3 and 4: twice, if no dryness occurs.
After that: three times maximum.
Hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, can be used daily without restriction. On evenings without AHA, it carries the routine.
Glycolic or Lactic
Glycolic is more penetrating and more effective on skin texture, at the cost of lower tolerance. Lactic is milder and more suitable for reactive skin.
For skin that has never been exfoliated, start with lactic acid. Hyaluronic acid combines equally well with both.
Sun, Non-Negotiable
AHAs significantly increase sensitivity to ultraviolet rays. Daily sun protection is part of the protocol, especially on the days following application.
Hyaluronic acid, for its part, has no effect on photosensitivity.
Forms of Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate often both appear in the same ingredient list: this indicates multiple molecular weights, and is a good indicator of a well-formulated product.
A dosage between one and two percent does the job. The percentage highlighted on packaging says nothing about the actual quality of the formula.

Reactive skin: lactic acid only, and hyaluronic acid every evening.
For sensitive skin, low-concentration lactic acid remains the only reasonable AHA, and hyaluronic acid applied afterward is not optional. For oily skin, glycolic acid is more suitable and can be used more frequently.
The common point for all skin types: these active ingredients weaken the skin barrier for a few days. This is where hyaluronic acid comes in, maintaining comfort while the surface naturally rebuilds.
A Coherent Skincare Routine
Cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect. AHA fills the "treat" slot on certain evenings; hyaluronic acid fills the "moisturize" slot every day.
Framing things this way avoids stacking products without knowing which one fulfills which function—the most common flaw of elaborate routines.
What Hyaluronic Acid Does Not Replace
It provides no lipids. After an AHA, it restores lost water but not the lipid cement removed by exfoliation.
For skin that remains rough the next day, add a cream with ceramides or a vegetable oil after hyaluronic acid. It's this layer that's missing, not a second dose of serum.
A Rhythm That Adjusts to the Season
Many skin types can tolerate an extra exfoliation in summer and one less in winter, when dry air weakens the surface.
