Lactic acid is the only common exfoliant that hydrates as it exfoliates. This characteristic makes it the acid of choice for dry, dull, and reactive skin—precisely those that tolerate others poorly. Its benefits are real and measurable, provided you know what to expect and over what timeframe.
An Exfoliant That Hydrates: The Dual Benefit
Most acids exfoliate and dry. This one does the opposite, through two distinct pathways.
In its acidic form, it breaks the bonds between surface cells and refines the stratum corneum. This is exfoliation.
In its lactate form, it joins the natural moisturizing factor—a blend of amino acids, urea, PCA, and lactate that the skin produces itself to retain water. Providing lactate therefore supplements a component the skin already recognizes.
Both forms coexist in any formula; their proportion depends on the pH. This is why the same ingredient can yield a strongly exfoliating treatment or a simply softening cream.
Studies have also shown that it stimulates ceramide synthesis in the epidermis. In other words, it strengthens the skin barrier while exfoliating, where other acids weaken it. This is the least known and most interesting benefit.
Its molecule belongs to the natural moisturizing factor present in the stratum corneum. This explains why it exfoliates without causing the sensation of tightness that usually follows this action.
The benefits of lactic acid stem entirely from this dual nature. No other fruit acid combines both, which makes it the default choice for dry or reactive skin types.
On Radiance and Skin Texture
This is the fastest and most visible benefit.
A dull complexion is dull because the stratum corneum is congested with dead cells that diffuse light instead of reflecting it. By accelerating their elimination, lactic acid makes the surface more even: light is reflected more directly, and the skin appears more luminous.
The effect is noticeable from the first application and stabilizes within two to three weeks. It is maintained as long as use is regular and disappears within a few weeks of stopping—desquamation returns to its natural rhythm.
The skin texture refines through the same mechanism. Surface irregularities diminish, the touch becomes smoother, and makeup lasts longer because it is applied to an even surface.
The benefits of lactic acid are due to a rare dual effect: it exfoliates and retains water, its molecule also being part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor. No other AHA combines both to this extent.
Applying lactic acid twice a week is enough to achieve smoother skin in six weeks. Using lactic acid more often does not speed up the process and weakens the surface; the eye contour remains outside the scope of application, regardless of the concentration.
On Spots and Skin Tone Evenness
The benefit exists, but it is indirect, and one must be precise about what to expect.
Lactic acid does not inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme that controls melanin production. Therefore, it does not slow down pigment production, unlike vitamin C or niacinamide.
What it does: it accelerates the shedding of cells already loaded with pigment. For post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation—the brown mark left after a pimple—the gain is significant because the pigment is still superficial. For a solar lentigo that has been present for years, it attenuates without erasing.

Its action is indirect: by accelerating the detachment of surface cells, it helps to shed those with excess pigment more quickly. For superficial spots, the effect is visible within two to three months.
For deep spots, nothing. And without daily sun protection, what lactic acid application lightens on one side, sun exposure darkens on the other—this is the most frequent cause of failure in this area.

The percentage alone means nothing: it's the concentration-pH combination that determines the effect. A 10% at pH 4.5 exfoliates less than a 5% at pH 3.5.
For a first use, 5% at pH 3.5 or 4 is a reasonable starting point. It provides a measurable benefit without requiring a long adaptation period.
Five percent for maintenance use, ten for a visible action on skin texture, fifteen for a supervised treatment. Beyond that, lactic acid for the skin falls within the professional setting.
The pH is as important as the percentage: at neutral pH, lactic acid no longer exfoliates. The benefits of lactic acid advertised on a bottle are therefore meaningless without this second piece of information, which is rarely displayed.
On Dry Skin and Body
This is where it has no serious competition.
Dry skin lacks lipids and does not retain water well. A classic acid aggravates both. Lactic acid provides humectant lactate while smoothing, which explains why it is tolerated where glycolic acid is not.
On the body, it effectively treats rough patches on the arms and thighs—those small bumps related to excess keratin around the follicles. Higher concentrations are tolerated here, as body skin is thicker.
Elbows, knees, and heels respond well to regular use, provided a rich cream is applied afterward. The acid disintegrates, the emollient nourishes: one without the other is not enough.
On the body, concentrations increase: ten to fifteen percent on rough arms and thighs, as the skin there is thicker. Apply in the evening, twice a week.
On dry facial skin, lactic acid for the skin has an advantage over all other AHAs: it exfoliates by providing water. This is the only case where exfoliating does not come with discomfort the next day.
Compared to Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid
The choice between the three depends on skin type and objective, not on a hierarchy of efficacy.

Glycolic acid, being smaller, penetrates deeper and stimulates cell renewal more. It acts more strongly on spots and texture, at the cost of more difficult tolerance. Some studies also attribute to it an effect on collagen production at high concentrations, which lactic acid does not claim to the same extent.
Salicylic acid plays in another category: oil-soluble, it enters the pore where the other two remain on the surface. It is the acid for blackheads, not for radiance.
Lactic acid therefore occupies the entry position: it is the one to start with when you have never used an acid, and often the one to return to when another has not been tolerated.
Glycolic acid has the smallest molecule and penetrates the most: it acts faster and irritates more. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and penetrates the pore, which reserves it for oily skin.
Lactic acid is in between the two, with an advantage that the others do not have: using lactic acid does not dry out, as its molecule participates in the natural moisturizing factor. This makes it the safest of the three to start with.
According to Skin Type
The same ingredient is not dosed or placed in the same way depending on the skin.
Dry skin. This is the reference indication. 5% twice a week, always followed by a rich cream. Lactate compensates for the water loss that exfoliation could cause.
Sensitive skin. Start at 2 or 3%, once a week, in a formula containing soothing agents—panthenol, allantoin, colloidal oatmeal. See our sensitive skin page. If the skin feels tight for more than an hour afterward, space out applications further.
Combination skin. Apply to the entire face, avoiding the sides of the nose for the first few weeks. A targeted salicylic acid on the T-zone can be combined with it, on another evening.
Oily skin. Lactic acid is suitable, but salicylic acid acts more directly on the pores. The first for radiance, the second for comedones.
Mature skin. Renewal slows with age and the stratum corneum thickens: regular exfoliation makes perfect sense. Twice a week, alternating with a retinoid on other evenings.
For dry skin, it is the AHA of choice: its ability to retain water compensates for exfoliation. For oily skin, salicylic acid is preferred; for combination skin, the two are distributed by zone.
Well-tolerated lactic acid skin is recognized in three weeks: no persistent redness or tightness the next day. Otherwise, reduce the frequency before reducing the concentration.
A Six-Week Protocol
The rhythm matters more than the chosen concentration.
- Weeks 1 and 2: one evening per week, at 5%, on clean and perfectly dry skin.
- Weeks 3 and 4: two evenings per week if no reaction has appeared.
- Weeks 5 and 6: three evenings maximum, or moving to a higher concentration—never both changes at the same time.
Each application ends with a moisturizing treatment. Every next morning requires sun protection, without exception: an exfoliant increases sensitivity to ultraviolet rays for several days.
Six weeks is the honest timeframe to judge. Below that, one mainly measures the immediate effect on radiance, which does not prejudge the rest.
Weeks 1 and 2: one application per week, in the evening, on perfectly dry skin. Weeks 3 and 4: twice. Weeks 5 and 6: three times if the skin tolerates it, never more.
Each application of lactic acid ends with a moisturizer. The next day, sun protection even in winter—freshly exfoliated skin remains more receptive to radiation for several days.
Associations and Alternations
With hyaluronic acid: natural association. The humectant restores comfort that exfoliation can affect.
With niacinamide: no real conflict, and complementary for uneven skin tone. The old debate about their pH incompatibility does not hold true in practice.
With a retinoid: alternating, never on the same evening. Both accelerate renewal; their combination is too harsh.
With vitamin C: vitamin C in the morning, acid in the evening. Mixing them in the hand accomplishes nothing.
With a mechanical scrub: never. Chemical exfoliation replaces mechanical, it does not add to it.

Never on the same evening as retinol or another acid. In alternation, however, the two complement each other well: lactic acid one evening, retinol two evenings later.
With niacinamide, no restrictions. With vitamin C, separate morning and evening. These are the only rules to remember, and they apply to lactic acid for the skin as well as other AHAs.
What Benefits Do Not Prove
A benefit measured in a laboratory is not a guaranteed result on your skin. Studies are based on limited populations, precise protocols, and specific formulas.
Lactic acid does not erase established wrinkles. It refines skin texture and reduces the appearance of surface fine lines, which is real and distinct from an action on the dermis.
It is not suitable for skin that is already weakened. For a damaged barrier—tightness, redness, recent sensitivity—restoration must come before exfoliation, otherwise, it risks worsening the condition.

Smoother skin does not mean structurally modified skin. What changes is the surface: being more regular, it reflects light better.
Claims that suggest deep action exceed what the molecule allows. On the eye contour, lactic acid has no place, regardless of the advertised concentration.
