Between 0.5 and 2%, and three to four drops per application. But the percentage displayed is not the most important figure: the molecular weight of the molecule determines what it actually does in the skin. This page explains the numbers one by one.
1% — the reference percentage
Most effective serums contain between 0.5 and 2% hyaluronic acid. This concentration is more than enough: beyond that, the formula becomes sticky without gaining effectiveness.
Hyaluronic acid retains up to a thousand times its weight in water. At 2%, a serum already contains far more retention capacity than the skin can use.
Products displaying 5% or 10% play on marketing hype. The texture becomes unpleasant, and there's no indication that the skin benefits more.
Conversely, hyaluronic acid at the end of the INCI list, after preservatives, is present at less than 0.1%. It's there for the label.
However, the displayed concentration doesn't tell the whole story about a product's effectiveness. Two 1% formulas can yield very different results depending on the other active ingredients present and the quality of the raw material.
The hydration achieved also depends on what is applied on top. A modest concentration well sealed by a cream performs better than a high concentration left exposed to the air.
The molecular weight of hyaluronic acid
This is where the main difference lies. Hyaluronic acid exists in very different sizes, and its size determines its depth of action.
High molecular weight, above 1,000 kDa, stays on the surface. It forms a film that retains water and immediately smooths the skin texture. Visible effect, superficial effect.
Low molecular weight, between 50 and 500 kDa, penetrates deeper. Its effect is less spectacular in the moment, and more interesting in the long term.
The best formulated products combine several — this is called multi-weight hyaluronic acid. On the label, this translates into several entries: sodium hyaluronate, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, sodium acetylated hyaluronate.
The most common INCI name remains sodium hyaluronate, which is the salt of the molecule and penetrates better than pure hyaluronic acid.
A recurring confusion constantly needs to be clarified. Hyaluronic acid applied topically in cosmetics and hyaluronic acid injections only share the molecule: the former remains on the surface, the latter is deposited in the dermis by a doctor.
Filling wrinkles and treating nasolabial folds fall under aesthetic medicine, with a volume measured in milliliters and an effect lasting several months. No serum reproduces this, regardless of its percentage — mentioning them here serves to define the boundary, not to propose them.
After an injection, the cosmetic routine can resume as soon as the doctor allows it, usually within forty-eight hours. The two approaches complement each other without being confused.
3 to 4 drops — the quantity per application
Three to four drops are enough for the face and neck. A hyaluronic acid serum is applied in a thin layer; applying more only affects the budget.
Two applications per day are suitable for most skin types. For very dehydrated skin, you can go up to three without inconvenience: hyaluronic acid presents no risk of overdose.
A thirty-milliliter bottle lasts about two months at this rate. If it lasts six months, you're not using enough.
Serum formulations remain the most interesting for this active ingredient. In a cream, the concentration is generally lower, and the hydration provided less noticeable.
Skincare products that combine hyaluronic acid and glycerin often offer better value for money. Glycerin is an effective and inexpensive humectant, naturally present in many cosmetic formulas.
This quantity is always surprising because it's less than what one spontaneously uses. The reason is mechanical: the surface of the face absorbs a finite quantity, and the excess remains on top, where it eventually pills under the next cream.
Doubling the dose therefore doubles nothing but the consumption of the bottle. It's better to apply less and more often.
The rule that makes everything else useless if ignored
Apply to damp skin, and seal with a cream. These two steps determine the result more than the product choice.
The reason is simple. Hyaluronic acid captures available water; if there's none on the surface, it takes it from deeper layers of the skin, and evaporation carries it away. A hyaluronic acid serum applied to dry skin in dry air will dry it out.
This is the most frequent flaw, and the one that explains the majority of negative reviews for this type of skincare. The formula was not the problem.
According to your skin type
Oily skin: it's the ideal moisturizer, because it doesn't add any oil. A serum under a light gel is sufficient.
Dry skin: essential, but never alone. A rich cream on top, systematically.
Sensitive skin: hyaluronic acid is among the best tolerated active ingredients. Any stinging reported almost always comes from another ingredient in the formula.
Mature skin: opt for a multi-weight formula. The surface plumping effect is immediate, and the low-weight fraction works longer.
Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the skin, where it plays a role in maintaining tissue hydration. Its concentration in the skin decreases with age, which explains some of the cosmetic interest in it.
This does not mean that a topically applied treatment replenishes this stock. The two phenomena are different, and no cosmetic formula seriously claims otherwise.
The same hyaluronic acid behaves differently depending on the ambient air. In a humid atmosphere, it captures external humidity and performs its function without assistance. In dry air — heating, air conditioning, altitude — it can do the opposite if it is not covered.
This dependence on climate explains opposing experiences reported for the same product. It is not the serum that changes, it is the context. The same bottle can be suitable in May and disappointing in January, without having moved.
What to combine it with
With everything, and first. It's a basic active: it's applied after cleansing, before other treatments, on skin that is still damp.
Before a retinol, it improves tolerance. Before a cream with ceramides, it provides the water that the cream will retain. Before a vitamin C, it poses no problem.
Only one negative piece of advice: there's no need to layer three products containing it. A concentrated serum does better than a serum, a cream, and a mask, each with a little bit.
Three companions are justified. Glycerin, which works by the same mechanism but on a smaller molecule, and covers the fraction that hyaluronic acid does not reach. A light emollient, which seals. And niacinamide, which does not compete with either of the two.
Three combinations require more caution. An exfoliating acid in the same layer, whose low pH can alter the gel's behavior. A strong active ingredient being introduced. And pure and simple accumulation: four layered serums do not penetrate better than two, they pill.
Time is the last parameter. One minute between two layers is enough to let the first one settle, and that allows the next one to hold instead of slipping.
What it doesn't do
It doesn't fill in established wrinkles. The smoothing effect is real but superficial and temporary, unrelated to injected hyaluronic acid, which is a medical procedure.
It doesn't provide long-lasting hydration on its own. Without a cream on top, the captured water evaporates in a few hours.
It doesn't treat dark spots, acne, or redness. It's a hydrating molecule, and that's already a lot.
It does not fill a wrinkle from the surface, does not replace an emollient, and does not provide sun protection. These three limitations are structural: they relate to the size of the molecule and where it remains.
What it does, however, it does well and at a moderate cost. It is one of the rare active ingredients whose effect is perceptible from the very first applications, provided that the only rule that counts is followed: cover it.
The rule that trumps percentage
Without an occlusive on top, one percent or three percent come to the same thing: the molecule attracts water, then lets it go. A hyaluronic acid hydrating gel combines the acid with a second humectant, but it is the next layer that determines the result.
