They are both humectants: they do the same job, attracting and retaining water. Hyaluronic acid enjoys a much higher reputation; glycerin costs a fraction of the price and is already in almost all of your creams. The comparison deserves to be made frankly.

What hyaluronic acid does
It retains several hundred times its weight in water. Applied as a serum, it forms a reservoir in the upper layers and produces a noticeable plumping effect within a few days.
Serious formulas combine several molecular weights: the larger ones remain on the surface and smooth, the smaller ones penetrate a little. This is the best indicator of the quality of a hyaluronic acid serum.
What glycerin does
Exactly the same thing, through a similar mechanism. It is the most widely used humectant and one of the best-documented in all cosmetics.
Its much smaller size allows it to penetrate more deeply. It doesn't produce the same surface smoothing, but its effectiveness on water content is comparable.
So, which one?
For immediate bounce: hyaluronic acid, which is its specialty.
For daily hydration, on a budget: a cream correctly dosed with glycerin is sufficient in the vast majority of cases.
In reality: you're probably already using glycerin without knowing it. Check the ingredient list of your cream before buying anything.
The common flaw of both
A humectant needs available water. Applied to dry skin, in dry air, it can draw moisture from wherever it finds it — including from the upper layers of the skin.
The solution is the same for hyaluronic acid and glycerin: apply to damp skin, and always seal with a cream or oil. Without this step, both disappoint.
Using them together
There's nothing against it and it's even common: many hyaluronic acid serums also contain glycerin.
If you layer them, apply the most concentrated humectant first to damp skin, then the cream containing glycerin. The order goes from thinnest to richest, as always.
On texture and feel
This is a real difference, often decisive in use. Hyaluronic acid leaves a smooth and slightly film-forming sensation; glycerin in high concentration can be sticky.
Above 10% glycerin, the sensation becomes unpleasant. Good formulas remain between 3 and 10%, where comfort is optimal.
What neither does
They provide no lipids. On skin that lacks oil — rough, slightly flaky — a humectant alone will not be enough, regardless of its quality.
You then need to add a fatty substance: a rich cream, or a few drops of vegetable oil. This is the most common mistake in routines centered on a single humectant.
Two humectants, one family
A humectant attracts and retains water. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin both belong to this family, alongside urea and panthenol.
The difference between hyaluronic acid and glycerin therefore lies not in their function but in their size and price. This is a nuance that commercial communications rarely emphasize.
Where the feeling of bounce comes from
The bounce provided by hyaluronic acid comes from its size: the large chains remain on the surface and form a film that visually smooths the skin texture. It is optical as much as hydrating.
Glycerin, much smaller, penetrates more deeply and does not produce this surface smoothing. Its effectiveness on water content remains comparable, however.
Choosing the right formula
Look for several molecular weights — sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid in the same list. A concentration of 1 to 2% is sufficient; beyond that, the texture becomes sticky with no demonstrated gain.
A pump bottle rather than a dropper, and a size you'll finish in a few months: these preparations do not keep indefinitely once opened.
According to your skin type
Oily skin: either is suitable, with a light gel-cream on top.
Combination skin: no particular adjustment needed.
Dry skin: the humectant alone will not be enough. You need to add a fatty substance, otherwise the lack of lipids remains completely unaddressed.
Sensitive skin: hyaluronic acid and glycerin are among the best-tolerated ingredients in cosmetics.
Hydration, in practice
Skin hydration depends on two things: the water present and the ability to retain it. A humectant only addresses the first.
This is why so many routines disappoint: they fill a leaky container. The fatty layer that follows is just as important as what precedes it.
How many times a day
Two applications are sufficient, morning and evening. Applying multiple layers throughout the day achieves nothing: the capture ceiling is quickly reached.
What matters more is to apply to damp skin each time, and to seal systematically.
What you should know
These ingredients are cosmetic: they improve skin comfort and appearance, without treating any condition. Persistently uncomfortable skin warrants dermatological advice.
