What exactly are peptides?

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the building blocks that also make up large support proteins, such as collagen and elastin. While a protein brings together hundreds of amino acids, a peptide only lines up a few: two for a dipeptide, three for a tripeptide, four for a tetrapeptide, six for a hexapeptide.

This small size makes them particularly interesting in formulation. Short enough, peptides glide into formulas and act as messengers: they speak the language of skin cells. They are often described as "biomimetic" messengers because they mimic sequences that the body naturally recognizes.

In facial care, they are synthetic active ingredients of high purity, designed for gentle and progressive action: a gentle beauty approach.

To remember
  • Peptide = a few linked amino acids
  • Protein = hundreds of amino acids
  • Collagen and elastin are proteins
  • Cosmetic role: skin messenger
  • Gentle tolerance, day and night

The main families of peptides

Not all play the same role. Here are the four families most often found in formulas, and the specific benefits of each.

Family Example (INCI name) What they do Cosmetic benefit
Signal Peptides
"messengers"
Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1
Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7
Carry firmness-related signals Toned appearance and enhanced density
Carrier Peptides
"carrier"
Copper Tripeptide (GHK-Cu) Transport trace elements to the epidermis Comfort, radiance, rested appearance
Neuropeptides
"relaxants"
Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 Help relax the appearance of features Visually smoothed expression lines
"Inhibitor" Peptides Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 Support the surface quality of the epidermis Smoother skin texture over the weeks

NOPAL LIFE formulas prioritize signal messengers, combined with prickly pear seed oil. INCI names given as examples, according to formulations.

Cosmetic benefits

Cosmetic use and documented interest; neither promise of effectiveness nor medical advice.

Firmness

Help preserve the appearance of bounce and tone, day after day.

Smoothing

Help reduce the appearance of fine lines and first wrinkles, over the weeks.

Density

Help the skin appear plumper and more toned.

Gentle use

A gradual approach, without irritation — usable day and night.

Facial peptides: where they make a difference

On the face, certain areas particularly benefit from such a targeted approach.

The eye contour

Thin and mobile skin: peptides help with the appearance of fine lines and tired-looking eyes.

The jawline and cheeks

Where tone is key every day, a facial peptide serum supports the toned appearance of the complexion.

The forehead and frown lines

Neuropeptides help visually relax expression lines, without freezing facial features.

Collagen peptides: building block and signal

Collagen is the main structural protein of the epidermis. Collagen peptides are small fragments: amino acids derived from this protein, often presented in hydrolyzed form in formulas. In a skincare product, they provide a plumping finish and contribute to the comfort of well-hydrated skin.

They are distinguished from signal messengers, which do not "nourish" the structure but communicate with it. The two approaches complement each other: the building block and the message, serving visible tone. This is also why peptides extend beyond the face, even into hair care products, another area rich in keratin.

Two complementary logics

Collagen peptides — the building block: small building blocks that provide suppleness and comfort.

Signal peptides — the message: they support the firm and plump appearance of the skin.

Cosmetic peptides or aesthetic medicine?

Two different worlds, which can complement each other according to your desires.

Peptide skincare

A daily cosmetic approach: a serum or cream is applied, without invasive procedures. Peptides gently accompany this firm and plump appearance, at its own pace.

Aesthetic medicine

Injections and aesthetic procedures are performed by a healthcare professional. They address other expectations; such a procedure can support them in maintenance, never replace them.

Frequently asked questions about peptides

How do peptides work?

These are very short fragments that mimic the skin's natural signals — some are associated with the appearance of firmness, others help visually relax features or support the comfort of the skin barrier.

At what age should I start using them?

From the first signs of sagging or as a preventative measure around 30 years old. Their gentleness allows for early use and long-term continuation.

Peptides or retinol?

Both! Retinol is more powerful but demanding; they are progressive and perfectly tolerated. The ideal: incorporate them daily, with retinol as a treatment in the evening.

Which active ingredients should they be combined with?

Vitamin C (radiance), support structure, hyaluronic acid (hydration volume), prickly pear (antioxidant nutrition).

Peptides or aesthetic medicine?

It's a cosmetic, topical, and non-invasive approach: you simply apply them. They don't replace an aesthetic medical procedure like injections, but offer a gentle alternative to be incorporated into your daily routine to care for skin tonicity.

Are peptides suitable for the eye contour?

Yes. Their gentleness makes them particularly suitable for the delicate skin around the eyes, where the goal is to smooth the appearance of fine lines without irritation. Apply in light touches, morning and evening.

How long does it take?

Peptides work over time. Allow several weeks of regular application to appreciate a more toned complexion and smoother skin texture: consistency is more important than quantity.

Peptides for hair too?

Indeed, they are found in some hair care products: like skin, hair fibers are rich in proteins, and they provide comfort and suppleness. For the face, they remain primarily allies for tonicity and radiance.
