Squalane: Dangers, Limitations, and Tolerance

Squalane is probably the most well-tolerated cosmetic ingredient available. Its neutrality is absolute, and this is precisely what makes it both strong and limited.

An ingredient with almost no risk

Squalane is obtained from olive oil or sugarcane, then hydrogenated to become stable. The result is a pure molecule, odorless, colorless, with no minor compounds.

This purity explains its tolerance: there is nothing else in the bottle. Reactions to squalane are exceptional, and it is among the few ingredients that can be recommended for very reactive skin without particular reservations.

The animal origin—shark liver, historically—is no longer common in current products. However, check for a plant-based mention if this is important to you.

Squalane is used in many skincare products as an emollient base. Its presence in a formula doesn't indicate anything specific about the product's quality: squalane serves as a carrier as much as an active ingredient, and its use has become common.

For reactive skin, squalane is often the first fatty substance to try. Daily application, morning and evening, poses no difficulty, and squalane does not require progression unlike active ingredients.

This simple use explains its popularity. Squalane is applied as the final layer, two to three drops are enough, and its application takes ten seconds.

Squalane production most often starts with olives. Olives provide a precursor that is hydrogenated to obtain a stable molecule; sugarcane serves as an alternative source, with an identical result.

This controlled production explains the product's consistency. From one brand to another, squalane is chemically the same, which is rare in cosmetics.

Squalane or squalene: the confusion

This is the only real pitfall of this ingredient. Squalene, without an "a", is the unhydrogenated form: it oxidizes quickly and does not have the stability of squalane.

One letter changes everything. Check the label: squalane, never squalene, in a quality cosmetic product.

What its purity prohibits

Squalane provides nothing more than an emollient effect. No vitamins, no antioxidants, no essential fatty acids.

Skin lacking linoleic acid will not find what it needs. An argan oil, rosehip or sunflower oil will provide more, at the cost of a less light texture and less stability.

Squalane seals and softens. That's all, and you need to know that before expecting anything else.

Squalane does not replace a nourishing vegetable oil. Skin lacking essential lipids will need something else, and squalane will only provide surface comfort.

It's a trade-off to make depending on the skin type. For reactive skin, the neutrality of squalane is better than the richness of a vegetable oil. For dry skin without reactivity, the opposite is true.

What it doesn't do

It does not hydrate: like any fatty substance, it retains water without providing any. A humectant beforehand is still necessary.

It does not act on wrinkles, spots, or texture. No fatty substance does.

It does not protect from the sun, and no oil or emollient does.

Squalane does not repair the skin barrier. It covers it, which provides temporary relief without correcting the cause: ceramides are necessary for that.

It has no action on sebum production, neither in one direction nor the other. Sources that claim otherwise confuse tolerance and regulation, two distinct things.

Where squalane is irreplaceable

Alongside demanding active ingredients. Its neutrality makes it the best companion for a retinoid or an acid: no compounds likely to interact, no additional variables on already stressed skin.

Also on very reactive skin, where every new ingredient is a risk. Squalane is often the only fatty substance that works.

On the body too, squalane is well suited after showering. Its use there is more generous and its light texture avoids the film sensation that other fatty substances leave on the legs.

For the eye contour, one drop of squalane is enough for both sides. The skin there is thin and the neutrality of squalane avoids reactions that other oils can cause in this area.

Stability that lasts for years

Squalane can be stored for years without special precautions. It is one of the few fatty skincare products that does not go rancid, which allows for large formats.

No odor should emanate from it. Squalane that smells of something is not pure squalane.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children

No restrictions. Squalane is one of the safest cosmetic ingredients, and its neutrality makes it a reasonable choice in all these situations.

Key takeaway

Squalane is an excellent, perfectly tolerated emollient, and a poor choice if you are looking for nutritional benefits. Its neutrality is its main quality.

Daily sun protection remains essential, as with any fatty substance.

When to consult

This product acts on skin comfort and nothing else. A reaction that persists after stopping the product warrants a dermatologist's opinion.
