Ceramides: Dangers, Limitations, and Tolerance

Ceramides are lipids that your skin produces itself. This explains their excellent tolerance, and makes the question of dangers largely theoretical.

Why tolerance is excellent

Ceramides make up the essential part of the skin's outer layer, where they ensure cohesion between cells and retain water. A product that provides them replicates a component already present.

Therefore, reactions to ceramides are rare. When a ceramide cream causes a reaction, the cause is almost always elsewhere in the formula: fragrance, preservative, essential oil.

This is a useful point for identifying a problem: suspect the rest of the list before the ceramides themselves.

Ceramides are not foreign bodies to the skin: they already constitute about half of the lipids in the stratum corneum. Applying them is like reapplying a molecule that the skin produces itself.

This explains the almost complete absence of reported reactions. Dermatologists also recommend them for atopic skin, meaning the most reactive skin there is.

The real limitations

Ceramides are not suitable as a standalone treatment. They repair the skin barrier; they do not hydrate, exfoliate, or act on spots or wrinkles.

A ceramide cream without a humectant yields few results on dehydrated skin. It is necessary to provide the water that the ceramides will then retain.

Their effect is limited to the surface. No applied ceramide reaches the deeper layers of the skin, and promises in this regard go beyond what the data establishes.

The first limitation lies in concentration. Many creams list ceramides at the end of the INCI list, at doses that do not change the function of the skin barrier.

The second lies in the ratio between lipids. The skin contains ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids in precise proportions; a treatment that provides only ceramides reconstructs only part of this complex.

The third limitation is the time frame. Results on comfort are seen in a few days, while those on the barrier require several weeks of regular application.

Concentration matters

Ceramides appear as ceramide NP, ceramide AP, ceramide EOP. Their position in the list indicates the quantity: after preservatives, they are present in trace amounts.

The skin combines its ceramides with cholesterol and fatty acids, in a ratio close to three to one to one. A cream that replicates this mixture repairs better than a cream that only lists ceramides.

A product that claims ceramides without specifying their dosage is still useful but works with only one out of three building blocks.

Reading the ingredient list teaches more than reading the marketing claims. An ingredient placed after preservatives is present at less than one percent, which is little for a structural active ingredient.

The best-documented formulas combine three families of lipids rather than just one. These are also the ones whose clinical studies report a measurable improvement in transepidermal water loss.

Price guarantees nothing. Pharmacy products costing fifteen euros contain comparable dosages to products sold three times as much.

Ceramides are naturally present in the stratum corneum, where they represent about half of the lipids. A cream that provides them supplements an existing stock: it doesn't create anything, it fills in.

This is why consistency matters more than concentration. The skin hydration obtained by this type of care is maintained as long as it is applied, and decreases when stopped — regardless of the type of formula chosen.

Synthetic ceramides

Almost all cosmetic ceramides are produced by synthesis. This is a good thing: reproducibility is better, and the risk of contamination is nil.

The origin does not change tolerance or efficacy. A synthetic ceramide is chemically identical to that of your skin, which is not the case for all cosmetic ingredients.

The ceramides used in cosmetics are almost all obtained by synthesis or fermentation. This does not make them inferior: the molecule produced is identical to the one the skin produces.

On the label, they appear under technical names — ceramide NP, ceramide AP, ceramide EOP. The number and letters designate the structure, not the quality.

Plant extracts said to be "rich in ceramides" raise more questions. Their actual content is rarely indicated, and it varies from batch to batch.

During pregnancy or breastfeeding

No restrictions. Ceramides are among the safest ingredients in cosmetics, and products containing them are suitable for children's sensitive skin.

How long to keep a cream

A ceramide cream follows the shelf life of an emulsion: six to twelve months after opening. A tube or pump keeps better than a jar opened with a finger, which gets contaminated.

A change in texture or the appearance of an odor signals a product to be discarded.

Once opened, a cream can be kept for the time indicated by the open jar symbol, often six to twelve months. Ceramides themselves are stable; it is the rest of the formula that ages.

An open jar gets contaminated faster than a tube or a pump bottle. On fragile skin, this detail matters more than one might think.

A change in texture, color, or odor is enough to decide: discard it. No cream is worth taking the risk of a reaction on an already damaged barrier.

In summary

Ceramides are among the safest and most useful ingredients for skin that feels tight. Their limitations stem from what they don't do, not from a risk.

They do not protect from the sun. Daily sun protection remains essential.

Situations requiring a doctor's attention

These products are cosmetic and work on the appearance of the skin. Skin that remains painful or inflamed despite appropriate care requires dermatological advice.
