Facial moisturizer: how to choose the right one for your skin

Facial moisturizer is the most universal skincare product in any routine – and yet it's often chosen incorrectly. Too rich, it suffocates; too.

Facial moisturizer is the most universal product in any routine—and yet it's often chosen incorrectly. Too rich, it suffocates; too light, it's not enough. Here's how to find the one that truly suits your skin.

What does a moisturizer do?

Its role is twofold: to provide water and comfort to the skin, and to limit its evaporation by strengthening the surface film. Well-hydrated skin appears more supple, smooth, and radiant—and tolerates active ingredients better.

Be careful of a common confusion: hydrating ≠ nourishing. Hydration provides water (via humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid); nutrition provides lipids (via oils and butters). The best creams combine both.

Skin barrier: the key to good hydration

Properly treating your skin first means preserving its skin barrier—this surface film that protects it from external aggressions (cold, wind, pollution) and retains water. When this barrier is weakened, water escapes and discomfort sets in, regardless of skin type.

A good product therefore doesn't just provide water: it also helps to strengthen the skin barrier and maintain its balance. This is true for normal to combination skin as well as for sensitive skin, each having its own specific needs.

The 3 ingredient families of a good cream

  • Humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid): capture and bind moisture. 👉 See Glycerin.
  • Emollients (vegetable oils, squalane): soften and smooth.
  • Occlusives (butters, waxes): form a protective film that limits evaporation.

Which moisturizer for your skin type?

Skin type Preferred texture
Dry Nourishing, with emollients + occlusives
Oily / Combination Light, gel-cream, non-greasy finish, non-comedogenic
Sensitive Minimalist, soothing, fragrance-free
Dehydrated Concentrated in humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin)
Mature Comfort and suppleness, enveloping formulas

Oily skin also needs hydration: depriving it of care can increase sebum production. The secret lies in the formula, not in the absence of cream.

How to apply it?

  1. On clean skin, after serum if applicable.
  2. Morning and evening, working upwards from the neck to the forehead.
  3. In the morning, always followed by SPF. 👉 See Facial Sunscreen.

Day or night, the needs differ: 👉 Day Cream vs Night Cream. For a broader choice, also see our guide Face Cream: How to Choose According to Your Needs.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying too much: a pea-sized amount is enough; excess suffocates the epidermis without additional benefit.
  • Neglecting fragrance on reactive skin: a minimalist, fragrance-free formula reduces the risk of intolerance.
  • Keeping the same formula all year round: needs evolve with seasons and lifestyle; regular adjustment makes a difference.
  • Forgetting the neck and décolleté: these areas age as quickly as the face and deserve the same care.
  • Skipping the step due to lack of time: regularity, morning and evening, takes precedence over product sophistication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can oily skin be hydrated? Yes, it's even essential—with a light, non-comedogenic texture. Depriving skin of water is counterproductive.

Moisturizer or serum: which first? The serum (more concentrated) first, then the cream (richer) to seal it in.

Should you change creams seasonally? Often yes: richer in winter, lighter in summer. Listen to your skin's comfort.
