A star of Korean skincare routines, essence is as intriguing as it is appealing. Not quite a toner, nor a serum: where does it fit in, and do you need it? A simple answer.
What is an essence?
Essence is a skincare product with a light, watery texture, falling between a toner and a serum. Its role: to provide a first layer of hydration and prepare the skin to better absorb subsequent treatments.
Originating in Asian routines, it embodies the idea of layering: applying thin textures rather than a single thick layer.
What an essence provides
- Light and immediate hydration, without feeling heavy.
- Visibly "plumped" skin, softer to the touch.
- A fresher and brighter complexion.
Essence improves skin's appearance of hydration and comfort. It is a cosmetic product, not a treatment.
A facial essence is a very light, watery preparation, often based on hyaluronic acid or a fermented extract. Its role is to deliver water to still-damp skin, before anything else.
What it actually does: prepares the surface so that subsequent products penetrate better. What it doesn't do: deeply hydrate in the commonly understood sense — skin hydration occurs on the surface, and no watery texture crosses the skin barrier. In terms of anti-aging, its contribution remains indirect, regardless of skin type.
Essence, toner, serum: how to distinguish them?
| Product | Texture | Main Role |
|---|---|---|
| Toner | Fluid | Refine cleansing, rebalance |
| Essence | Watery, light | First hydration, prepare skin |
| Serum | Concentrated | Target a specific need (radiance, wrinkles…) |

How to use an essence?
- After cleansing (and toner if you use one).
- On still slightly damp skin, by patting with your hands — no cotton pad needed.
- Before serum and cream.
- Morning and/or evening, depending on desired comfort.
Do you really need an essence?
It's not an essential step: good hydration can be enough. But essence is valuable if you like layering routines, if your skin is dehydrated, or if you're looking for that "fresh skin" effect characteristic of Korean routines.
The Nopal Life approach
We believe in simple but well-thought-out routines. An essence is only worthwhile if it serves your skin — not to multiply bottles. Combined with a nourishing treatment like prickly pear oil, it completes a light hydration-comfort routine.
Frequently asked questions
Essence or serum: which to choose if I have to pick one? Serum, being more concentrated, targets a specific need; essence hydrates and prepares. If you're starting out, a serum + a good cream are sufficient.
Can you skip toner and keep essence? Yes, many prefer essence, which is more hydrating than rebalancing.
