Rosehip oil is one of the most fragile oils on the market. Its richness in polyunsaturated fatty acids is both its strength and its weakness: it goes rancid within a few months. Aloe vera gel, on the other hand, poses a different preservation problem.
Why it oxidizes so quickly
Nearly eighty percent of its fatty acids are polyunsaturated, including a high proportion of linolenic acid — an omega-3. Each double bond is a point of attack for oxygen, and this oil has many of them.
Result: three to six months after opening, no more. Keep it cool, in an opaque bottle, and close it immediately. A rancid smell signals the end; the oil doesn't become dangerous, but it stops providing what you paid for.
What to expect from it on the skin
Its reputation comes from its content of essential fatty acids and natural vitamin A in the form of trans-retinol, present in trace amounts. Reported uses include evening out skin tone and improving the appearance of old marks.
The timelines are long — three to six months of daily application — and the results are partial. It is a foundational oil, not a corrective one, and presenting it otherwise inevitably leads to disappointment.
Order and time of day
First, apply aloe vera gel to clean skin. Wait one minute. Then, warm three drops of rosehip oil between your palms and press onto your face.
Preferably in the evening. Its amber color can slightly tint the complexion, which may be an issue in the morning under light makeup, and the trace amounts of trans-retinol it contains perform better away from light.
Recognizing quality oil
Cold-pressed, unrefined, with a deep orange color. A pale oil has been refined or has aged. The Latin name — Rosa rubiginosa or Rosa canina depending on the origin — should be on the label, and the country of harvest is a good sign when indicated.
The price per milliliter is high, and that's normal: the extraction yield is low. Cheap rosehip oil is almost always cut with a neutral oil. Our rosehip oil information sheet details these criteria.
For which skin type
Dry, mature, and normal skin: without reservation. Combination skin: on the cheeks only. Oily and acne-prone skin: caution is advised, as this oil is among those that most often cause problems in this area.
A test on a limited area for a week remains the only reliable method, as published comedogenicity scales vary widely from one source to another.
Corresponding products
The aloe vera day cream provides a more substantial aqueous phase than gel alone, and the nourishing facial oil offers a stable alternative to a fragile oil — this is its main advantage in this area.
Pure aloe vera or commercial gel
Gel taken directly from the leaf is pure aloe vera, and it does not keep: forty-eight hours in the refrigerator, no more. Commercial gels contain a gelling agent and a preservative, which is a technical necessity and not a deception.
For the use described here, a commercial gel with a high content is perfectly suitable. The only point to check is the absence of alcohol at the top of the ingredient list, as alcohol cancels out the desired moisturizing effect.
How often to apply
The gel once or twice a day, morning and evening. Rosehip oil once a day, in the evening, or only two to three times a week for combination skin. It should be applied to clean, still slightly damp skin, never to dry skin.
On the body, the same logic applies with more generous quantities: gel after showering, then oil on dry areas. Legs and arms can tolerate doses that the face would not.
What each does, separately
Aloe vera gel soothes and hydrates the surface; its effect lasts a few hours and extends if covered. Rosehip oil protects the surface film and limits the evaporation of water provided by the previous step.
Neither replaces the other, and that's what makes the combination coherent. Using oil alone on dry skin is like lubricating without hydrating; using gel alone in dry air is like applying water that will evaporate within the hour.
For how long
Allow three months of daily application before judging skin tone uniformity, and six for the appearance of old marks. This is a long time, and it is the real time frame for this type of care — no formulation shortens it.
Comfort, however, is felt in a few days. Not confusing the two avoids the disappointment that leads to changing products every month without ever giving any product time to work.
