Combining aloe vera and lactic acid: why pH is key

Two products with the same percentage of lactic acid can act very differently. The difference lies in a figure that most brands don't display: the pH.

pH in practice

An acid only works in its free form, and the free part depends on the pH of the formula. At pH 3.5, most of the lactic acid is active; at pH 5, most of it is neutralized and the product exfoliates little, regardless of the advertised percentage.

This rule explains why a five percent serum can be more active than a ten percent cream. The displayed number measures the amount present, not the amount that works.

Lactic acid, the gentlest of alpha-hydroxy acids

Its molecule is larger than that of glycolic acid, so it penetrates more slowly. It is also naturally present in the skin, where it is part of the natural moisturizing factors – which is a unique feature among acids used in cosmetics.

This dual property gives it a unique profile: it exfoliates and hydrates. For dry skin, it is the acid of choice; for oily skin, a salicylic acid will be more suitable.

Aloe vera as a soothing phase

Its extract provides water and an immediate cooling sensation that compensates for the slight tingling after acid application. It does not neutralize the acid if applied after a sufficient delay – allow twenty minutes.

Its moisturizing properties also prolong the effect of lactic acid itself, with both working on water retention through different pathways. This is one of the few combinations where both active ingredients complement each other in the same area.

The formula and the rhythm

Two weekly applications to start, then three if the skin tolerates it. On other evenings, the gel alone. For reactive skin, start with one application and double at each step – the final rhythm is the same, the path is longer.

It is best to avoid combining two acids in the same routine, or an acid and a retinoid on the same evening. These combinations rarely improve the result and often cause irritation that leads to abandoning everything.

What to expect

A more even skin texture in three to four weeks, followed by a brighter complexion. For marks left by old imperfections, the effect is gradual and partial. Our lactic acid sheet specifies these timelines.

Catalogue products

The radiance tonic with rose water and lactic acid offers a low concentration, suitable for frequent use. The gentle cleansing foam with aloe vera prepares the skin without weakening it before the acid.

This combination compared to others

Compared to salicylic acid, lactic acid acts on the surface rather than in the pores: it is suitable for dull skin, less so for blemish-prone skin. Compared to glycolic acid, it penetrates more slowly, making it easier to integrate.

As for the combination of hyaluronic acid and lactic acid, it addresses another need: to hydrate and exfoliate, without the soothing part that aloe vera provides here. All three can also coexist in the same routine, at different times.

What aloe vera measurably provides

The gel has moisturizing properties linked to its polysaccharides, which retain water on the surface. It also contributes to immediate comfort after an acid, which is not a detail: it often determines whether the routine will be maintained or abandoned.

For sensitive skin, this soothing phase allows an alpha-hydroxy acid to be used where it would otherwise be poorly tolerated. This is the main benefit of the combination, and it is practical rather than chemical.

Regular, long-term use

The gel daily, the acid twice a week. This regularity is more important than concentration: a modest formula used for six months improves texture more than a strong formula abandoned after one month.

Sun protection is mandatory with any exfoliation, as the new layer marks more quickly. This is the only real constraint of this protocol, and it is not negotiable.
