A gel that provides water, an oil that prevents it from leaving. The division is clear. What is less clear, and what determines the result, is the nature of the gel you use.
Pure gel or formulated gel: the real question
Aloe vera gel sold in bottles is almost never pure juice. It contains a gelling agent, a preservative, and often a humectant, otherwise it would go bad in a few days. This is a technical necessity, not a trick: freshly extracted leaf juice degrades at room temperature in less than forty-eight hours.
A 99% natural aloe vera gel is therefore a good product, and a 40% gel in a well-constructed base can be just as good. The percentage alone says nothing. What you need to look for is the position of the words "Aloe barbadensis leaf juice" in the list and the absence of alcohol at the beginning.
What borage oil adds
Its oil has the highest gamma-linolenic acid content in the plant kingdom, around twenty percent. This is an essential fatty acid that the body has difficulty producing and whose production decreases with age.
On the skin, this contribution results in regained comfort in areas that feel tight. It takes several weeks to measure it, and the effect is particularly noticeable on dry and mature skin — other skin types benefit less.
The order and the gesture
First, aloe vera gel on clean skin, a thin layer. Wait one minute, the time it takes to dry. Then two drops of borage oil warmed between the palms and pressed onto the face, never rubbed.
One to two times a day is enough. Applying more often changes nothing: what matters is consistency over several weeks, not frequency during the day.
Storing two fragile products
This is the weakness of this combination. The gel fears heat, the oil fears light and oxygen. Both should be kept cool, and the oil should be used within six months of opening.
An odor that turns rancid signals the end of the oil's life. It does not become irritating in this state, it simply stops providing what it was chosen for. The gel, however, warns differently: it liquefies or changes color.
For which skin types
Dry and mature skin: both, every evening. Combination skin: gel everywhere, oil on the cheeks. Oily skin: gel alone, oil reserved for winter if the skin feels tight.
For reactive skin, a patch test on the crook of the elbow for two days is essential before the first application of the oil — this is the rule for any unrefined vegetable oil.
Products that follow this logic
Our aloe vera day cream already combines the aqueous phase and an emollient base, which replaces the two steps for those looking to simplify. The gentle aloe vera cleansing foam prepares the skin without stripping it, and this is the condition for subsequent steps to be effective.
