Combining aloe vera and centella asiatica: the method

This is the go-to routine for reactive skin. Aloe vera provides hydration and freshness, while centella asiatica offers compounds that provide lasting soothing. Neither stresses the skin, which is exactly what we're looking for in this case.

Key points

  • Order: aloe vera gel, then centella asiatica.
  • When: early in the routine, on damp skin.
  • Essential: a cream on top.
  • Frequency: morning and evening, every day.
  • Effect: immediate on one side, gradual on the other.

What each brings

Aloe vera gel is composed of over 98% water, with polysaccharides and some minerals. It refreshes, hydrates, and its effect is noticeable upon application.

Centella asiatica provides identified compounds—madecassoside, asiaticoside, asiatic acid—whose soothing action on reactive skin is better studied than that of aloe vera.

The two therefore complement each other without overlap: a refreshing aqueous base on one side, an active ingredient on the other. This is a logical use, and it is already found in many Korean formulas.

Application order

Aloe vera gel first, as it's the most watery. Centella asiatica serum or cream next. One minute of waiting between the two is sufficient.

If your two ingredients are combined in the same formula—a common occurrence—then the question doesn't arise. In that case, check their position in the ingredient list.

The step without which nothing holds up

Always apply a cream on top. Aloe vera gel draws water to the surface without retaining it: without a fatty layer afterwards, this water evaporates and the skin feels tighter than before.

This is the most important rule on this page. A soothing routine that stops at the gel often produces the opposite effect of what's desired, leading to the mistaken conclusion that the products aren't suitable.

For skin going through a tough time

Stop all active ingredients. Keep a gentle cleanser, this combination, and a cream. Three products for two weeks.

This is the most effective protocol to restore skin degraded by an accumulation of exfoliants or retinoids. The effect is clear after a few days, and complete in about two weeks.

Then reintroduce one active ingredient at a time, two weeks apart. Rebuilding too quickly will bring you back to square one.

Two effects, two rhythms

Aloe vera provides relief within minutes. Centella asiatica works over weeks, and its effect is judged after a month.

This delay has its uses: the immediate freshness makes the routine pleasant while the active ingredient produces a more lasting effect. This is what helps maintain consistency over time.

Use with an active ingredient

This combination works very well with a retinoid or an acid. The soothing gel and serum are applied before the active, on clean skin, or after, depending on the textures.

The simple rule: from thinnest to thickest. In practice, aloe vera gel, centella asiatica, active, cream—or the active first if your skin tolerates it better that way.

Choosing your products

For aloe vera, the juice or gel should be listed first, before water. A bright green gel has been colored: aloe vera is naturally translucent.

For centella asiatica, look for the extract concentration or the mention of madecassosides. A cream that already combines it with panthenol or ceramides makes an excellent single product.

Avoid added fragrances and essential oils. On reactive skin, these are the primary irritants, and they cancel out the desired benefits.

According to your skin type

Reactive skin: the clearest indication, morning and evening.

Oily skin: a soothing gel-cream is sufficient, without an additional layer.

Dry skin: add a rich cream, or even an oil, after the centella asiatica.

Normal skin: occasional use after exposure or an acid.

What this routine doesn't do

It does not act on wrinkles, spots, or texture. It soothes and hydrates, which is its entire role — and often an underestimated one.

It does not protect from the sun. Daily sun protection remains essential, and it matters more for reactive skin than for any other.

Available extract forms

Centella asiatica extract comes in several forms. Total extract contains all the plant's compounds; titrated extracts isolate a specific compound, most often madecassoside.

A titrated extract allows you to know the quantity actually present. A total extract, less precise, remains useful: the plant's properties rely on all its compounds as much as on each one taken individually.

This plant also has another name you'll encounter on some labels: gotu kola. It's the same plant, and the same extract.

A use adapted to irritations

For mild irritations—redness after shaving, tightness due to cold, skin reaction to a product—this daily use provides results in a few days.

For irritations that have been present for weeks, use must be longer and stricter: no active ingredients, no fragrance, no essential oils. A month of sobriety is better than one more product.

Properties that can be claimed

These two plants improve skin comfort and contribute to surface hydration. This is what the cosmetic framework allows to state, and it is already useful.

The medical properties sometimes attributed to them fall outside this framework. A skincare product is not a treatment, and combining these two plants does not change this limitation.

Combining them with an acid

An exfoliating acid can coexist with this routine, provided it's spaced out. Salicylic acid, lactic acid, or glycolic acid are applied to clean skin, and the soothing product comes afterward.

A maximum of two evenings per week. Hyaluronic acid, however, does not exfoliate: it can be combined without any precautions and complements the overall skin hydration well.

Body use

These treatments are not limited to the face. Irritated skin on the body from shaving, epilation, or clothing friction responds well to the same combination.

Usage is more generous and the process simpler: apply to damp skin after showering, then a cream. The principle remains the same.

When to stop and consult a professional

These products are cosmetics and improve skin comfort without treating any conditions. Redness that spreads, a wound, pain, or a reaction that persists despite stopping all active ingredients requires a dermatologist's opinion without delay.

Thinnest first

Both exist in an aqueous phase and don't interfere with each other: the only methodological point is the order of textures. Centella serum or essence first, then an aloe vera day cream that seals everything in before sun protection.
