Aloe vera or centella asiatica: which one for your skin?

Two soothing plants, but one is better studied than the other. Aloe vera cools and hydrates; centella asiatica provides compounds whose action on sensitive skin is better documented.

Two plants, two profiles

Criterion Aloe vera Centella asiatica
Part used leaf gel whole plant extract
Active compounds polysaccharides madecassoside, asiaticoside
Main effect cooling, hydration soothing, comfort
Documentation medium better
Common form pure gel serum, cream

Aloe vera in brief

The gel contained in Aloe barbadensis leaves is over 98% water. It provides polysaccharides, some minerals, and traces of vitamins.

Its main asset is the immediate freshness it provides to heated skin, and the water it delivers. It does not nourish, and the virtues attributed to it beyond hydration and soothing fall outside the cosmetic field.

Centella asiatica

Centella asiatica is a plant from Southeast Asia, long used in traditional medicine and now a common ingredient in Korean skincare.

Its compounds—madecassoside, asiaticoside, Asiatic acid, madecassic acid—are grouped under the name madecassosides. These are what give the plant its cosmetic interest, and they are better studied than the components of aloe vera.

On reactive skin, centella asiatica provides lasting soothing and improves comfort. It is an active ingredient, whereas aloe vera gel is primarily an aqueous support.

Which to choose

Immediately heated skin: aloe vera, for the immediate effect.

Daily reactive skin: centella asiatica, whose action is deeper.

After a demanding active ingredient: centella asiatica, which complements retinoids well.

Tight budget: aloe vera, significantly cheaper to use.

What the comparison reveals

These two plants are often presented as equivalent, under the common label of plant-based soothing care. They are not.

Centella asiatica provides identified, measured, and studied compounds. Aloe vera provides water and a sensation. Both are useful, but not in the same way or for the same expectations.

Available forms

Aloe vera is sold as a pure gel, ready to use. This is its practical advantage: nothing to measure, nothing to formulate.

Centella asiatica is found in serums or creams, rarely isolated. Look for the stated extract concentration, or the mention of madecassosides in the ingredient list.

On sensitive skin

This is where the comparison makes perfect sense. Skin that easily blushes, reacts to temperature changes, or tolerates active ingredients poorly will benefit more from centella asiatica.

Aloe vera remains useful as a complement, particularly for its immediate effect. But for established sensitivity, it is not enough.

On plant-based skincare

The word "plant" guarantees nothing. A plant extract can irritate, a synthetic compound can be perfectly tolerated, and the origin says nothing about the level of evidence.

What matters is what the data shows for each ingredient taken separately. By this criterion, centella asiatica ranks ahead of aloe vera, without disqualifying the latter.

The right gesture

These treatments are applied early in the routine, on still-damp skin, before oily products. A cream always comes afterward: neither retains the water it provides.

For skin in poor condition, simplify to three products for two weeks. A gentle cleanser, a soother, and a cream often restore a situation degraded by too many active ingredients.

Their limits

Neither acts on wrinkles, spots, or firmness. They are soothing treatments, which is already a useful role.

None protect from radiation. Daily sun protection remains essential.

An important caveat

These products are cosmetics and act on the appearance and comfort of the skin, without treating any condition. Spreading redness, a wound, or a persistent reaction requires medical advice.

The substance or the touch

Centella is often used as a treatment, during periods when the skin reacts; aloe vera is an everyday product. For sensitive skin, regularity is what matters most, and an aloe vera cream applied every morning is better than a strong active ingredient used sporadically.
