Aloe vera hydrates the surface, peptides target the depths. These two ingredients are not interchangeable and don't even belong to the same category: one is an aqueous support, the others are active ingredients.

What aloe vera is
Aloe vera is the gel contained in the leaves of Aloe barbadensis. It is composed of over 98% water, with polysaccharides, some minerals, and trace vitamins.
This composition explains what it does: it provides water to the skin, offers an immediate cooling sensation, and soothes overheated skin. Its use after sun exposure or shaving is a well-established practice.
What aloe vera does not do deserves to be stated just as clearly. It does not nourish—its fat content is negligible—and the virtues attributed to it beyond hydration and soothing fall outside the cosmetic field.
Its natural use and low cost nevertheless make it an honest product, provided you expect from it what it can deliver.
What peptides are
Peptides are short chains of amino acids obtained by synthesis. Several families coexist: signal peptides, carrier peptides, peptides acting on surface contraction.
Signal peptides aim to interact with skin cells. Research exists but remains uneven depending on the molecules, and the concentrations used in cosmetics are often modest.
This is an area where commercial promises regularly exceed what the data establishes. Their undeniable advantages are excellent tolerance and good stability.
Which to choose
Dehydrated, overheated, uncomfortable skin: aloe vera, without hesitation.
Anti-aging goal for firmness: peptides, accepting a two to three month delay.
Tight budget: aloe vera, whose cost per use is incomparable.
Reactive skin: both are suitable, their tolerance being good.
The comparison is poorly posed
These two ingredients do not occupy the same place in a routine. Aloe vera is a hydrating support applied early; peptides are an active ingredient chosen for a specific goal.
Many peptide serums also contain aloe vera as an aqueous base. In this case, there's no need to choose: both are already combined.
Using them together
This is the most coherent use. Aloe vera gel on clean skin, one minute of waiting, then the peptide serum, then a cream.
Aloe vera prepares the skin by providing water; peptides then get to work. This combined use simply requires respecting the order of textures, from thinnest to thickest.
Hydration, and its pitfall
Aloe vera draws water to the surface without retaining it. Applied alone in dry air, it can even leave the skin feeling tighter than before.
A cream on top resolves the issue. This is the most neglected rule with this type of gel, and the one that changes the result the most.
Peptides don't retain water either: they don't have this function. Hydration in a routine never comes from its main active ingredient.
On anti-aging, the balance of things
Peptides target firmness, with varying results depending on the families and dosages. Aloe vera does not act in this area, and claiming otherwise would be dishonest.
Well-hydrated skin immediately appears smoother, which explains why a gel is sometimes attributed an anti-aging effect. This is an appearance effect, real but temporary.
Choosing an aloe vera gel
Aloe juice or gel should appear first in the ingredients list, before water. Many products sold as aloe vera gels are gelled water with a little extract.
In its natural state, this gel is translucent: a strong color comes from a dye. Also avoid added fragrances, which are primary irritants on already overheated skin.
Choosing a peptide serum
Look for the precise name of the peptides in the ingredients list and their position. The mention "with peptides" in large print says nothing about the quantity present.
The names are long and technical—palmitoyl tripeptide, acetyl hexapeptide—and that's normal. Their presence after preservatives, however, indicates too low a quantity.
What neither can replace
Sun protection. For signs of aging, it produces more effect than any active ingredient on this page, and its level of evidence is the highest of all.
Daily sun protection conditions the results of any anti-aging routine. Without it, you build on one side what you undo on the other.
A necessary caveat
These products are cosmetics: they act on the appearance of the skin without treating any condition. A burn, a wound, or a spreading skin reaction requires medical advice, not a soothing gel.
A fundamental need and a targeted active ingredient
Peptides address skin whose concern is firmness; aloe vera addresses skin that needs water and calm, every day. One does not replace the other, but without the latter, the active ingredient is applied to poorly prepared ground — this is where an aloe vera day cream for sensitive skin comes in handy.
