What goes wrong in a glycolic acid routine is almost never the product. It's the rhythm. Aloe vera gel is precisely for maintaining this rhythm without discomfort.
What glycolic acid does
It is the smallest of the alpha-hydroxy acids, which allows it to penetrate quickly and act strongly. Its action consists of breaking the bonds between dead cells on the surface, which then detach themselves.
The results concern texture, complexion radiance, and evenness. They are visible in three to six weeks. For spots, improvement is partial and requires more time; for established wrinkles, there is nothing to expect.
The schedule, week by week
Weeks one and two: one application, in the evening, on dry skin. Weeks three and four: two spaced applications. From the fifth week: two to three times a week, never more for domestic use.
On evenings without acid, use aloe vera gel alone. This alternation is not a compromise, it is the protocol: the surface needs to regenerate between two applications, and without this delay, exfoliation damages instead of improving.
Where aloe vera intervenes
On acid evenings, wait twenty minutes after application before applying the gel. This delay allows the product to act at its pH, which the gel would raise if applied too soon.
The gel then soothes the slight irritation that often follows application and hydrates a surface that exfoliation has made more permeable. A cream on top seals everything in.
Formulations and concentrations
From five to ten percent for home use. Beyond that, it enters the realm of professional care. But the percentage alone is not enough to judge: an eight percent product at pH 4 is gentler than a five percent product at pH 3.
This figure rarely appears on the packaging. In its absence, the only reliable method remains observation: if the skin tingles for more than two minutes, the formula is too strong for it, regardless of the label. Our glycolic acid guide reviews these benchmarks.
Sun protection is not optional
Exfoliated skin exposes a younger layer, which scars more quickly. Without daily protection, glycolic acid produces exactly the opposite of what is expected for the complexion. This is not a comfort precaution, it is a condition of use.
The topic is developed on our sun protection page, which gives dosages and indices according to the season.
The products
Lactic acid AHA peel offers a gentler path than glycolic for beginners, and purifying cleansing gel with aloe vera handles the cleansing step without stripping.
According to skin types
Normal skin: two applications per week, with no particular precautions. Oily skin: up to three, monitoring dry areas. Dry skin: only one, with a richer moisturizing cream afterwards. Sensitive skin: one application every ten days, or a gentler acid.
These adjustments matter more than the choice of product. A well-dosed serum used at the wrong rhythm gives worse results than an ordinary formula used correctly.
What can be added, and what should be avoided
Hyaluronic acid can be integrated without difficulty: it has no specific tolerance threshold and does not count as an additional active ingredient. A moisturizing cream on top is essential on acid evenings.
To avoid on the same evening: a second acid, a retinoid, a mechanical scrub. Each taken in isolation is manageable; two together produce the irritation that makes you abandon everything after three weeks.
Cell renewal, and why it takes time
The superficial layer renews itself in about twenty-eight days in a young adult, longer with age. An acid accelerates the detachment of already dead cells; it does not modify the speed at which new ones form.
This is why radiance and texture are judged after six weeks and not before. What is seen in the first week is due to the immediate effect of a smoothed surface, and this effect does not provide information about what follows.
