Argan or jojoba: nourishment or balance?

Argan or Jojoba: Nourishment or Balance?

Two essential plant oils, two skin profiles. Argan nourishes, jojoba provides a sensation of balance. Here's how to decide.

At a glance

Criterion Argan Jojoba
Main effect Rich nourishment Balance, skin affinity
Cosmetic benefits Nourishment, suppleness, comfort Balance, comfort, light feel
Texture Rich oil Light liquid wax
Skin types Dry, mature Combination to oily, all types
Sensation Enveloping Dry / non-greasy

The choice comes down to composition. Argan oil provides essential fatty acids and vitamin E; jojoba oil has a structure similar to sebum. The former nourishes, the latter regulates the surface sensation.

For hair, the difference is even clearer. Argan oil penetrates the hair fiber and is suitable for dry, damaged hair; jojoba coats without weighing it down and is suitable for oily scalps. Neither replaces the other.

On the face, hydration does not come from either: they are fatty substances, they retain water without providing any. The best application is therefore on still damp skin, whatever the choice.

When to prefer argan

To nourish dry skin and provide suppleness and comfort, as a rich treatment.

Argan oil is dominated by oleic acid and contains a significant proportion of essential fatty acids that the body does not produce. This composition makes it suitable for skin lacking lipids and for dry or damaged hair, where it penetrates the fiber rather than remaining on the surface.

For hair use, a few drops on lengths and ends are sufficient. For dry hair damaged by heat or coloring, a pre-shampoo treatment gives more than a daily application — contact time matters more than frequency.

When to prefer jojoba

For combination skin thanks to its affinity with the skin's protective film and its light feel, which leaves a sensation of balance.

Jojoba oil is not technically an oil but a liquid wax, whose composition resembles human sebum. It integrates into the existing film instead of adding to it, which explains its reputation on combination skin.

This proximity does not alter sebum production, contrary to what is often read. What changes is the sensation of heaviness, which is less for the same quantity — and when choosing between the two, this is the criterion that practically decides.

For facial hydration, jojoba and argan complement each other rather than competing: the former during the day under makeup, the latter in the evening when nothing needs to stay on top.

A word on penetration, often misunderstood. Argan oil actually penetrates the hair fiber; jojoba remains on the surface and coats. For dry, damaged hair, the former repairs the internal structure, the latter smooths the cuticle — two needs, two answers.

For facial hydration, neither provides water. They retain the water that is already there, which requires them to be applied to still damp skin. The best choice therefore depends less on the oil than on when it is applied.

NOPAL LIFE recommendation

The choice depends on your skin: argan for nourishment, jojoba for a sensation of balance. Both can also complement each other within the same routine, in adapted doses.

A final criterion often differentiates them: preservation. Argan oil, rich in vitamin E, keeps for twelve to eighteen months. Jojoba, chemically a wax, hardly ever goes rancid and keeps for years — a real advantage for those who use little.

To choose in practice, the best method remains to test on a limited area for two weeks. Daily application of a small amount provides better information than any comparison of compositions, because tolerance cannot be read on a label.

The two blend very well, and this is often the best answer when in doubt. Half-and-half gives a fatty substance that is both nourishing and light, and whose preservation benefits from the stability of jojoba.

For both hair and face, this blend avoids having to decide based on the season. It also eliminates the question of choice, which wastes more time than it deserves.

The word penetration covers two realities that are confused. An oil can cross the hair cuticle, which argan does, or simply spread in the interstices of the stratum corneum, which most do. None reach the dermis, and none need to.

For budget, the calculation is done per milliliter and not per bottle. These two oils are used in drops: three for the face, about ten for a head of hair. At this rate, a 30 ml bottle covers several months, and the price difference between the two becomes negligible compared to the use.

Frequently asked questions about argan vs jojoba

What is the difference in nature between the two?

Argan is a true oil rich in nourishing fatty acids; jojoba is a liquid wax whose structure is similar to skin sebum. One nourishes, the other provides a sensation of balance.

Which one for oily skin?

Jojoba, without hesitation: due to its proximity to sebum, it leaves a sensation of balance and a non-greasy finish. Non-comedogenic, it is even suitable for blemish-prone skin.

Which one for dry skin?

Argan: its fatty acids and vitamin E nourish intensely. Jojoba can supplement on the surface, but the true nourishment comes from argan.

Which one keeps best?

Jojoba, almost inoxidable thanks to its wax structure: it keeps for years. Argan, more classic, prefers to be used within the year.

And for hair?

Argan to nourish dry lengths and ends; jojoba to provide a sensation of balance to an oily scalp or to restore shine to fine hair without weighing it down.

Can they be mixed?

Yes: 50/50, they form a balanced universal oil — nourishment from argan, sensation of balance from jojoba — suitable for almost all skin types.
