Glycolic acid is the smallest of the alpha-hydroxy acids, and it's this size that makes all the difference—both in terms of benefits and risks. Seventy-six grams per mole: it penetrates faster and deeper than its competitors, acts more on texture and spots, and irritates more easily. Its benefits are among the best documented in cosmetics, provided you accept the trade-off.
Why molecular size dictates everything
The molar mass of glycolic acid is 76 g/mol. That of lactic acid is 90. That of mandelic acid is 152.
The smaller a molecule, the more easily it passes through the spaces between the cells of the stratum corneum. Glycolic acid thus reaches layers that other alpha-hydroxy acids only touch.
Once there, it acts on corneodesmosomes, the protein structures that hold corneal cells together. It accelerates their degradation, and thus desquamation. It doesn't dissolve the skin: it accelerates a process that happens anyway.

Glycolic acid is the smallest of the alpha-hydroxy acids, these fruit acids originally derived from sugarcane. This smallness allows it to penetrate faster than lactic or mandelic acid.
This explains both its benefits and its limitations: it effectively detaches dead cells and supports cell renewal, but it irritates more. On skin texture, the effect is visible sooner than with others – for age spots, it requires the same patience.
Texture and radiance: the fastest benefits
This is what is seen first, and where the data is most solid.
Dull skin is dull because the cluttered stratum corneum diffuses light instead of reflecting it. By refining this layer, glycolic acid makes reflection more direct: the skin appears brighter.
The skin texture tightens through the same mechanism, and makeup lasts longer because it is applied to a regular surface.
Published trials most often use concentrations of 5 to 10% applied over several weeks. Improvement in texture is generally observed between the fourth and twelfth week—not after a single application, although the radiance effect is immediate.
Skin texture refines in two to three weeks: this is the fastest and most consistent benefit. Radiance follows, as a regular surface reflects light better.
The benefits of glycolic acid in this area are due to the detachment of dead cells, nothing more. It is a fruit acid that works on the surface, and its effectiveness depends as much on the pH of the formula as on its concentration.
On pigment spots
This is the most sought-after benefit and the one that requires the most precision.
Glycolic acid does not inhibit tyrosinase: it does not slow down melanin production. What it does is accelerate the removal of cells that are already laden with it.
On post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation—the brown mark that follows a pimple—the gain is clear, because the pigment remains superficial. On an old solar lentigo, it fades without erasing.
Its best use is in combination: exfoliation clears the surface, which improves the penetration of depigmenting active ingredients applied afterwards—vitamin C, niacinamide, arbutin. See our guide to brown spots.
An inseparable warning: exfoliating without sun protection creates the spots you were trying to fade.
Its action is indirect: it accelerates the removal of pigment-laden cells. For superficial age spots, allow three months; for deep spots, there will be no effect.
Without daily sun protection, glycolic acid is counterproductive in this area. It makes the surface more receptive, and sun exposure darkens what cell renewal has just lightened.
On firmness, a lesser known benefit
At high concentrations and over several months, glycolic acid shows an effect on the dermis that other AHAs do not claim to the same degree.
Studies report a stimulation of collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis by fibroblasts. The epidermis thickens slightly, density improves, and the appearance of fine lines diminishes.
Two caveats are necessary. These effects are observed mainly at concentrations that are usually found in clinics, not in daily care. And the delay is long: several months of regular use, not a few weeks.
For home use, it's better to expect from glycolic acid what it certainly delivers—texture, radiance, superficial spots—and rely on a retinoid for the rest.
Regular exfoliation slightly thickens the epidermis in the long term, contrary to popular belief. This is a documented, modest effect that takes several months to establish.
This is not an action on the dermis. The benefits of glycolic acid remain those of a fruit acid working on the surface: what changes relates to skin texture and the regularity of cell renewal, never to the deep structure.
Concentration and pH: the two figures that matter

The percentage alone says nothing. Only the free acid fraction acts, and it depends on the pH: a 10% at pH 4.5 exfoliates less than a 5% at pH 3.5.
A brand that indicates the pH of its formula provides crucial information. Its absence forces you to guess and to start cautiously.
How to introduce it
- Weeks 1 and 2: once a week in the evening, at 5%, on clean and perfectly dry skin.
- Weeks 3 and 4: twice a week in the evening if no reaction has appeared.
- From the second month: higher concentration or increased frequency, never both together.
Always in the evening, never in the morning. Always followed by a moisturizing treatment. And always SPF 50+ sun protection the next day, for the entire duration of use.
The stop signal: if the skin feels tight, red, or tingles an hour after application, the dose is too strong. A successful exfoliation should not be felt the next day.
Once a week for two weeks, then twice, then three times if the skin tolerates it. On perfectly dry skin, never after aggressive cleansing.
Applying hyaluronic acid the next morning supports comfort while the surface regenerates. It is the most useful complement to a fruit acid, and often the most overlooked.
Compared to other acids
Lactic acid exfoliates less deeply but hydrates at the same time, thanks to lactate which belongs to the natural moisturizing factor. It is the choice for dry and sensitive skin.
Mandelic acid, with its large molecule, penetrates slowly. Its tolerance is excellent, making it the option for dark skin, where any irritation risks leaving a lasting mark.
Salicylic acid is in a different category: being oil-soluble, it enters the pore. It's the acid for blackheads, not for radiance.
Glycolic acid remains the most powerful of the three AHAs for texture and spots. It is not the best in all circumstances—it is the strongest, which is not the same thing.
Lactic acid hydrates while exfoliating, mandelic acid is gentler, salicylic acid penetrates the pore. Glycolic acid remains the fastest and most demanding in terms of tolerance.
For uneven skin texture, it outperforms other fruit acids. For reactive skin, it comes last — and applying hyaluronic acid the next day remains the best way to make its use bearable.
What benefits do not guarantee
They are only valid for skin that tolerates them. On a compromised skin barrier, glycolic acid worsens instead of improving: you must restore before exfoliating.
It does not erase an established wrinkle. It diminishes the appearance of surface fine lines, which is real and distinct from an action on the dermal relief.
It does not act on enlarged pores, whose diameter depends on genetics and sebum production.

For pitted acne scars, there is no effect: they affect the dermis, while glycolic acid is active on the surface. For pigmented marks left by old imperfections, the gradual elimination of pigment-laden cells yields a partial result, over several months.
Integrating glycolic acid into a routine that reveals smoother skin means accepting these limitations. What is read about collagen production pertains to concentrations used in clinics; at home, its use remains that of an exfoliant, with a moisturizing cream afterwards to compensate.
Smaller molecule, less margin for error
This is what differentiates glycolic from lactic acid: it penetrates faster, so it acts faster and is less forgiving. For new or reactive skin, starting with an AHA peel with lactic acid allows time to observe, with the option to switch to glycolic acid later.
