High molecular weight hyaluronic acid stays on the surface and limits trans-epidermal water loss: this is the "plumping" effect, spectacular but ephemeral if not sealed. Locate the position of these names: above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order. Sodium hyaluronate placed after preservatives is present in trace amounts, regardless of the product description. Two or three different names, at distinct molecular weights, on the other hand, indicate a true multi-fraction formulation. The other ingredients on the list are just as important: they determine the final texture.
Accompanying active ingredients
- Glycerin. The most universal humectant, well tolerated, active from 3%. It does not provide immediate bounce but maintains long-term comfort.
- Ceramides. Present in many moisturizing creams, they reinforce the film that hyaluronic acid cannot create alone — a useful combination for dry and mature skin.
- Panthenol. Humectant and softening, it improves suppleness and comfort.
- Aloe vera. It provides polysaccharides that help maintain moisture: a natural partner for the weekly mask described below.

The hyaluronic acid and aloe vera mask
The weekly mask offers a longer application time that daily life doesn't allow: it doesn't replace regularity, it amplifies it. Aloe vera provides polysaccharides and water, and hyaluronic acid retains this moisture. Preparation: 2 min.
- Pour 1 teaspoon of pure aloe vera gel (minimum 99%, without alcohol or fragrance) into a clean bowl.
- Add 4 to 5 drops of your serum, mix for 15 seconds until you get a homogeneous gel.
- Apply a thick layer to cleansed and still damp face, avoiding the eye contour.
- Leave on for 8 min. If the mask starts to dry, spray thermal water mist over it: it should never harden.

- No preservation possible: this mask contains no preservatives, it should be prepared and used immediately.

The only cautionary point for these treatments concerns highly acidic exfoliants: below pH 3, they degrade the long chains applied in the same layer. Therefore, separate applications: one in the morning and the other in the evening, or on alternate days. Six mistakes that negate the benefits
- Applying to dry skin. Without surface moisture, hygroscopic molecules will draw moisture from deeper layers, leading to paradoxical dryness, very noticeable on planes, in winter, or under air conditioning. A mist of water sprayed just before application corrects the problem.
- Not applying anything over it. Hyaluronic acid does not create an occlusive barrier; without a lipid layer, the captured water evaporates in a few tens of minutes.
- Believing that more concentrated is better. A well-formulated 0.5% solution outperforms a poorly designed 2% formula: it's the entire formula that matters, not just the percentage. Beyond 1%, the texture becomes sticky and the benefit plateaus.
- Ignoring the pH. The optimum is between 4.5 and 6.5; outside this range, stability and texture degrade.
- Layering illogically. Three layers—aqueous, active, occlusive—are sufficient. Each additional product dilutes the previous one.
- Expecting immediate and lasting results right away. Surface results are visible in 15 to 30 minutes; sustained firmness requires 4 to 8 weeks of regularity.
