Beetroot: Radiance & Antioxidant Hydration
Under the INCI name Beta Vulgaris Root Extract, red beetroot root concentrates betalains — the same rare antioxidant pigments as prickly pear — while its natural sugars and betaine help preserve hydration. For a healthy glow, naturally.

In brief
Beetroot, from root to bottle
Botany, varieties and sourcing of the cosmetic extract.
Behind the INCI name Beta Vulgaris Root Extract lies a vegetable plant cultivated in Europe for centuries: red beetroot (Beta vulgaris), from the Amaranthaceae family, formerly Chenopodiaceae. In cosmetics, it is the fleshy root — not the leaves — that yields the desired extract, brimming with pigments and natural sugars.
The species Beta vulgaris includes several varieties familiar from gardens and vegetable patches: the red table beet, the surprising Chioggia with pink and white rings, the golden variety with yellow flesh, and the sugar beet — a major crop, rich in sugar, from which betaine is also extracted. All descend from a single wild plant found on the European coast. Depending on the season, young leaves are also consumed; but it is field-grown red beets, from organic sources, that we select for the cosmetic extract.
At NOPAL LIFE, sourcing is as important as the molecule itself. We favor organically grown beetroot, harvested at maturity — the main harvest extends from autumn until the first frosts — from living soils in Europe, including France. A traceable, seasonal raw material, far from forced cultivation.
From one root to another, the hue and pigment richness vary slightly: the soil, the season, and the variety leave their mark on the deep color of the flesh. This slight variability is not a defect — it is the signature of a truly plant-based, non-standardized material, whose every batch of extract retains its character.
What the root contains
Pigments, moisturizing agents, nutrients: the profile of red beetroot.
The intense red-purple color of the root is no accident: these are betalains, a family of rare plant pigments that the plant shares with prickly pear fruit. There are two main types: red-violet betacyanins — including betanin, the most abundant — and yellow-orange betaxanthins. These molecules are what attract attention as antioxidants in cosmetics.
In short, beetroot combines an antioxidant pigment—betalains—and two families of hydrating agents, betaine and sugars, in a single root. This dual nature is what makes it interesting for enhancing radiance.
Beetroot and prickly pear: two betalain sources compared
A NOPAL LIFE exclusive—the two betalain champions side by side.
Few plants can produce betalains: red beetroot and the Opuntia fruit are the two main cosmetic sources. However, they are not alike. This table compares what distinguishes them, molecule by molecule.
| Criterion | Red Beetroot | Prickly Pear |
|---|---|---|
| Part used | Root | Fruit (pulp & seeds) |
| INCI name | Beta Vulgaris Root Extract | Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil |
| Dominant pigment | Betanin (betacyanin) | Indicaxanthin (betaxanthin) |
| Pigment shade | Red-violet | Yellow-orange |

Why beetroot at NOPAL LIFE
Few plants produce betalains — beetroot and Opuntia fruit are the two main sources. At NOPAL LIFE, this antioxidant kinship is no coincidence: beetroot brightens, prickly pear nourishes, and skin regains its natural radiance.
Discover our radiance care productsFrom the garden to the plate, then to skincare
Before joining our formulas, beetroot has a long history at the table. A root vegetable from the garden, it is eaten raw and grated or cooked, in salads as well as in rustic recipes; its sweet and sugary flavor has made it a classic of European cuisine. When cooked, its red color easily bleeds – a visible sign of the power of its pigments. It is this same intensity that interests us: once the purified root extract, beetroot lends its richness in betalains to enhancing radiance. From the garden to the bottle, without interruption – the root that we cook and the one that we formulate are indeed the same.

Frequently asked questions about beetroot
What are betalains?
Rare, red-violet antioxidant pigments primarily found in beetroot and prickly pear fruit. They are studied for their ability to neutralize free radicals.
Does beetroot stain the skin?
No — in cosmetics, extracts are dosed for a subtle healthy glow effect, without coloration. Only some tinted care products intentionally use it as a natural pigment for lips or cheeks.
Betalains or betaine: what's the difference?
Two distinct molecules from beetroot. Betalains are red-violet antioxidant pigments (including betanin); betaine (INCI Betaine), mainly extracted from sugar beet, is a humectant that helps preserve hydration and comfort. The same vegetable, two complementary assets.
Red beetroot, Chioggia, sugar beet: which variety for cosmetics?
It is the red table beet (Beta vulgaris) that provides the root extract rich in betalains, for radiance. The sugar variety, on the other hand, is mainly used as a source for hydrating betaine. Chioggia and golden varieties, more decorative, remain primarily garden vegetables.
For which skin types is it recommended?
Dull, tired, or dehydrated complexions benefit most—and all skin types can enjoy it as a radiance booster.
What active ingredients can it be combined with?
Prickly pear (betalains), pomegranate and vitamin C (antioxidant radiance), hyaluronic acid (plumping hydration).
How to store a beetroot-based product?
Like any product rich in plant pigments, keep away from light and heat, with the bottle tightly closed. The natural color may slightly change over time without affecting the pleasantness of the product—this is characteristic of living matter.
