Sea Buckthorn: Radiance & Antioxidants

This small orange berry is packed with nutrients and rare fatty acids, including the precious omega-7. Harvested in clusters from a thorny shrub in Europe and Asia, it yields two complementary fatty substances—pulp and seeds. At NOPAL LIFE, this fruit revives dull complexions, alongside prickly pear.

The fruit, the plant and its origins

Better understanding the plant helps to understand the richness of its extract.

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a thorny shrub of the Elaeagnaceae family, widespread in the wild in Europe and Asia, from coastal dunes to the high valleys of the Himalayas. Its branches bear long thorns and thin, silvery-green leaves on the underside; in autumn, its berries cluster densely along the wood, covering every branch. It is these, and not the leaves, that provide the extract sought after in cosmetics.

It is a dioecious plant: there are male and female plants, and only female plants bear berries. A productive plantation therefore combines both, ensuring a good presence of male subjects for pollination. A pioneer species, this shrub colonizes poor and unstable soils: in symbiosis with bacteria housed in its roots, it fixes nitrogen from the air and enriches the soil — a quality that explains its use in restoring difficult terrain, from the seashore to embankments.

Harvesting, delicate due to the thorns, often involves cutting the fruit-bearing branches. Varietal selection work—carried out notably in several universities and agricultural stations in Northern Europe and Asia—has resulted in varieties with larger fruit, fewer thorns, and consistent content. The final quality depends on this selection: a ripe berry, gorged with carotenoid pigments, yields a richer and more stable nectar. Depending on the use, its extract is then found in oil, serum, or cream.

Where its name comes from

An etymology that speaks volumes about its radiant reputation.

The scientific name Hippophae comes from ancient Greek: hippos, horse, and phaos, shine. Tradition tells that horses fed on its branches displayed particularly shiny coats — hence this image of light and vitality that has endured through centuries.

Hardy, it grows where almost nothing else thrives: wind-swept dunes, high plateaus of Central Asia, cold foothills. This ability to withstand both frost and drought leads to a dense, colorful, highly concentrated harvest — much like prickly pear, which also flourishes on ungrateful terrain.

Two oils from the same fruit

This fruit yields two fatty substances with very different profiles — a detail many are unaware of.

Feature Pulp oil (fruit) Seed oil
Dominant fatty acid Omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), often 20 to 40% of fatty acids Omega-3 and omega-6 (linolenic + linoleic), close to 1:1
Color Intense orange to red (rich in carotenoids) Light yellow, more subtle
Feel Nourishing, enveloping Light, dry, fast-absorbing
Ideal for Dull, mature skin seeking comfort Combination skin looking for a non-greasy texture

Another advantage: the berry is among the richest in vitamin C, with a content often cited between 200 and 900 mg per 100g depending on the variety and origin — several times that of an orange. In cosmetics, it's mainly its carotenoids that give it its healthy glow effect.

Choosing the right oil

Four tips for a quality selection, to keep in mind before any online purchase.

Pulp or seeds

The label specifies the origin of the fat: "fruit oil" for the pulp, rich in omega-7, "seed oil" for the seeds. Both have their benefits depending on your skin type.

Pulp color

Authentic pulp tends towards deep orange: this is a sign of a ripe berry and a good carotenoid content.

Gentle extraction

Cold pressing better preserves fatty acids and tocopherols than hot processes. This is often indicated on quality products.

Origin & variety

Variety, soil, and climate vary its profile. A clear origin (Europe, Asia) and careful selection ensure consistency.

To compare it with other radiance-boosting active ingredients, consult our online ingredient comparator. The benefit of this active ingredient lies in the rare joint presence in the plant kingdom of carotenoids, tocopherols, and omega-7. Depending on the variety and soil, the active ingredient content varies from one origin to another.

Cosmetic benefits

Cosmetic use; documented interest, without promise of efficacy.

Radiance

Its richness in carotenoids revives the luminosity of dull complexions and unifies skin texture.

Powerful antioxidant

The berry concentrates vitamin C, tocopherols, and polyphenols: an antioxidant profile that helps preserve the skin's fresh appearance.

Rare Omega-7

Sea buckthorn oil is one of the richest in omega-7 (palmitoleic acid): this rare fatty acid supports skin comfort and suppleness.

Vitality

Rich in nutrients, the fruit of the shrub contributes to a more toned and rested skin appearance, day after day.

Why we chose it

It is one of the most antioxidant fruits in the world: its orange berry concentrates protective pigments and carotenoids, a profile that echoes prickly pear. At NOPAL LIFE, these two botanical treasures combine their strengths to defend skin radiance and support its vitality, day after day. We prioritize carefully selected fruit with a clear orange color, a guarantee of ripe fruit and a generous content of active ingredients.

Integrating it into your routine

Step 1

Cleansing
Gentle gel or foam depending on your skin.

Step 2

Radiance serum (morning)
Sea buckthorn or vitamin C to protect and illuminate.

Step 3

Nourishment (evening)
Prickly pear oil on clean skin.

Step 4

Protection (morning)
SPF to preserve radiance.

The NOPAL radiance ritual — 60 seconds in the morning

On clean, slightly damp skin, dispense 2 to 3 drops of a serum or vegetable oil into the palm of your hand, warm for 5 seconds between your palms, then gently press onto your face (never rub) for 20 to 30 seconds. Leave on for 2 minutes before SPF. A single drop is enough on the T-zone if your skin is combination, to maintain a light finish without overload.

The NOPAL LIFE spirit

A cosmetic approach of consistency, more than promises.

At NOPAL LIFE, each ingredient is chosen for what it brings to the daily ritual, without excess. We seek simple formulas with simple gestures: a morning treatment to awaken the complexion, another in the evening to regain comfort after a day exposed to wind, cold, or light. This philosophy, born from expertise rooted in Mediterranean botanicals, prioritizes gentleness and regularity over spectacular effects.

It is through consistency, season after season, that a ritual reveals its value: a few gestures maintained over time are better than an overly complex routine that is quickly abandoned. This demanding selection is complemented by attention to the sensory — the texture, the finish, the freshness at the time of application — because a product we love to use is a product we keep using. The desired result is not a superficial glow, but a rested appearance, day after day.

Storage and daily use

Three simple habits to make the most of it.

Rich in carotenoids, this product is sensitive to light and heat: store the bottle away from light, tightly closed, and use it within months of opening to preserve its color and active ingredients.

Before the first application on the face, a patch test in the crook of your elbow for 24 hours helps verify your skin's tolerance. In case of doubt or known reactivity, consult a healthcare professional.

Finally, less is more: 2 to 3 drops are enough for the entire face. Too generous a texture can leave a greasy finish and mask the desired lightness. In the morning, always follow with sun protection to maintain radiance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shrub or small tree?

It is a thorny shrub (often 2 to 4 m tall), with branches covered in thorns and fine silvery leaves. Its orange berries grow in tight clusters. The plant is dioecious: only female plants, once pollinated by male plants, bear fruit.

Are the leaves or fruits used?

The leaves of the shrub are mainly used in herbal tea, appreciated for well-being. In cosmetics, it is the oil extracted from the fruits — pulp and seeds — that interests the skin, for its nutritional profile and its density in protective compounds.

What is its vitamin C content?

Highly variable depending on the variety and origin: the berry often contains 200 to 900 mg of vitamin C per 100g, several times the content of an orange. Grown on poor soils, this shrub nevertheless concentrates remarkable active ingredients.

What is omega-7?

A rare monounsaturated fatty acid (palmitoleic acid), particularly present in the plant, known for supporting the comfort and suppleness of fragile skin.

Does sea buckthorn oil stain?

Pure, its intense orange color can temporarily stain: in cosmetics, it is dosed for a healthy glow effect without coloring, often diluted in other oils.

For which skin types is it indicated?

Dull, mature, or tired complexions benefit the most from it, thanks to its antioxidant and revitalizing profile.

Which active ingredients should it be combined with?

Prickly pear, vitamin C, niacinamide — to boost radiance and protection.
