One transforms, the other supports — and without the latter, many give up on the former. Retinol is the active ingredient whose effect on the signs of aging is the most well-documented. Squalane is a neutral emollient, with no active properties of its own, whose role is to make the overall process tolerable.
Two distinct roles
| Criterion | Retinol | Squalane |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | vitamin A derivative | neutral emollient |
| Action | wrinkles, texture, pores | seals, softens |
| Timeline | 3 to 6 months | immediate |
| Tolerance | initial irritation | excellent |
| Frequency | progressive | daily |
| Sun | increases sensitivity | no effect |
What retinol does
It is a derivative of vitamin A, and the active ingredient whose action on the signs of aging is the best established. It accelerates the renewal of surface cells and supports collagen production.
Its results include established wrinkles, skin texture, and pore appearance. They are real but slow: expect three to six months of regular use.
Its counterpart is initial irritation — redness, flaking, increased sensitivity — which generally lasts a few weeks if you progress slowly.
What squalane does
Nothing in terms of active properties: neither vitamin, nor antioxidant, nor essential fatty acid. It is a pure emollient, obtained from olive or sugarcane.
Its texture is remarkably light, it leaves no film, and its tolerance is excellent. Squalane penetrates quickly, which makes it comfortable even on skin sensitized by a retinoid.
Why the comparison is flawed
They do not aim for the same goal and are not interchangeable. Squalane will never act on a wrinkle; retinol will never provide the immediate comfort of an emollient.
The real question is not which one to choose, but how to make them work together — which the rest of this page details.
The sandwich technique
This is the most useful way to use squalane with a retinoid. Apply a layer of squalane, then the retinol, then a second layer of squalane.
Penetration is slowed, irritation significantly reduced, and efficacy only slightly diminished. Retinol used for six months in a sandwich does more than pure retinol abandoned after three weeks.
Introducing retinol without discouragement
Weeks 1 and 2: two evenings a week, on perfectly dry skin.
Weeks 3 and 4: every other evening if tolerance allows.
Afterwards: every evening if the skin allows it — many do very well at five times a week.
Squalane, on the other hand, can be used every day without restriction, including evenings without retinol.
Which to choose if you can only have one
Goal for wrinkles and texture: retinol, unparalleled.
Skin lacking comfort, oily textures not well tolerated: squalane.
Very reactive skin: squalane first, for a month, before considering a retinoid.
On perfectly dry skin
This is a rule that applies to retinol alone: applied to damp skin, it penetrates faster and irritates more.
Dry completely after cleansing, wait if necessary, then apply a pea-sized amount for the entire face. More does not improve anything and worsens irritation.
The sun
Retinol increases sensitivity to ultraviolet light. Daily sun protection is part of the protocol, without exception.
Squalane, on the other hand, has no effect on photosensitivity.
Where squalane comes from
It is obtained from olive oil or sugarcane, then hydrogenated to become stable. Animal origin, historically shark liver, is no longer used in common products.
The result is a pure molecule, odorless and colorless, which can be stored for years. This purity explains its tolerance: there is nothing else in the bottle.
Forms of retinoids
Retinol is the most common cosmetic form. Retinal acts faster, retinyl palmitate more gently and weakly.
Prescription forms are significantly more powerful and fall outside the scope of cosmetics. They require medical supervision.
What squalane does not provide
No essential fatty acids, no antioxidants, no vitamins. It seals and softens, nothing more — and that's precisely what is asked of it when used with a retinoid.
A rich vegetable oil would provide more compounds, but also more variables on already stressed skin. Squalane's neutrality is an advantage here.
What to know before starting
These products are cosmetic and improve the appearance of the skin without treating any condition. Retinol is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding: consult a healthcare professional.
Squalane is not a renewing active ingredient
It provides light fat and comfort, nothing more: comparing it to retinol is like comparing a vehicle to an engine. If you are looking for an effect on fine lines without the harshness of retinol, a bakuchiol serum fills this role, and squalane remains useful as a subsequent layer.
