Complete prickly pear routine: how far can you go

Building an entire routine around a single ingredient makes sense up to a point. Here's why, and what else to look for.

What prickly pear seed oil brings to the table

Extracted from the seeds by cold-pressing, it is rich in linoleic acid—over sixty percent—and natural vitamin E, at levels that are among the highest of vegetable oils. These essential fatty acids are part of the composition of the skin's surface film.

Its texture is fine and penetrates quickly, making it suitable for most skin types, including combination skin. Its very low extraction yield explains its price: almost a ton of fruit is needed for one liter of oil.

The areas it covers well

The nutrition and protection of the hydrolipidic film. As a final layer, in the evening, two to three drops are sufficient. On mature or dry skin, it is an excellent finishing product, and its vitamin E content protects the lipids it provides.

It is also suitable for eye contour care, where its fineness is an asset, and for dry areas of the body. Our cold-pressed prickly pear seed oil is the benchmark product for this purpose.

The areas it does not cover

It does not hydrate: an oil retains, it does not provide water. Without an aqueous phase beforehand, it lubricates a surface that will remain dry. This is the most significant and most often ignored limitation.

It does not cleanse, does not protect against ultraviolet rays, and does not act on spots or imperfections. A complete routine needs something else for these four functions, and claiming otherwise does a disservice to an ingredient that doesn't need it.

The routine, step by step

In the morning: a gentle cleanser, an aqueous phase, a light cream, sun protection. In the evening: cleansing, aqueous phase, then the oil as the final layer. Apply it to skin that is still slightly damp, never dry.

Leave one minute between each layer. Two to three drops warmed between the palms and pressed onto the face, without rubbing—the quantity matters less than the gesture.

Other available forms

The seed powder is used as a gentle exfoliating mask, once a week. Exfoliating soap covers body cleansing. The enriching cream incorporates the oil into an emulsified base, which solves the question of the aqueous phase.

Our face mask with seed powder, our exfoliating soap, and our enriching night cream cover these uses.

Storing an expensive oil

Opaque bottle, away from light and heat, resealed immediately. Twelve months after opening thanks to its vitamin E, which is good for an oil rich in unsaturates. An odor turning rancid signals the end.

Getting the whole set at once

The Prickly Pear Signature Ritual brings together the steps built around this ingredient. Our prickly pear page details the composition, and the plant's journey its origin.
