An aloe vera mask provides hydration and a refreshing sensation—and it must be sealed in, otherwise the benefit won't last more than two hours. The gel is over 98% water: without an occlusive layer on top, this water evaporates and can even exacerbate tightness on dry skin. This is the limitation that no label mentions.
Cosmetic gel, juice, fresh leaf: three different materials
The aloe leaf contains two distinct substances, and the confusion between the two poses a real problem.
The central pulp is the clear gel we seek: water, polysaccharides—mainly acemannan—minerals, and trace vitamins.
Just under the rind circulates a yellow latex, rich in anthraquinones, including aloin. It is irritating and has no place on a face. It is responsible for the bitterness and yellowish color of poorly prepared gel.
On the INCI list, look for Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice. The mention Leaf Juice Powder indicates a reconstituted powder of variable quality. A good quality gel is transparent or slightly opalescent, with no strong scent, and includes a preservative system—because a product that is 98% water needs one.
If you use a fresh leaf, cut it and let it drain vertically for fifteen minutes to remove the latex, then extract only the pulp. It oxidizes quickly: two to three days in the refrigerator, no longer. See our aloe vera page.
Reading the label beyond "99% aloe"
This claim is the primary selling point and the least informative.
What matters is the order of the first five ingredients. A gel with aloe at the top of the list is consistent; a gel where water precedes aloe is less so, despite an appealing displayed percentage.
Two mentions should raise a red flag. Alcohol at the beginning of the list—alcohol denat.—provides immediate freshness but then dries out the skin: this is precisely the opposite of the desired effect. And fragrance, which is unnecessary here and the primary cause of intolerance for reactive skin.
A vivid green color means nothing: aloe gel is naturally colorless. A green gel is a colored gel.
Gel, glycerin, and oat recipe
The basic formula, suitable for most people.
One tablespoon of aloe vera gel, about fifteen milliliters, which is enough for the face and neck.
Three drops of vegetable glycerin, which prolong water retention. Three drops, no more: beyond that, the surface becomes sticky.
Half a teaspoon of colloidal oatmeal, which soothes and slightly thickens.
Stir for thirty seconds. Apply to the face, avoiding the eye area, leave on for eight minutes, moisten fingertips, remove with slow movements, then rinse with lukewarm water.
Apply a cream within minutes. This step is not optional: it is what transforms a two-hour effect into an effect that lasts all day.
Dosages according to skin type
| Skin Type | Gel | Addition | Application Time | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dehydrated Skin | 1 tbsp | 1 tsp honey | 10 min | Once/week |
| Combination Skin | 1 tbsp | 3 drops glycerin | 7 min | Once/week |
| Dry Skin | 1 tbsp | 3 drops jojoba | 8 min | Once/week |
| Sensitive Skin | 2 tsp | 1/4 tsp oat | 5 min | Once/2 weeks |
For dry skin, jojoba oil improves glide and provides the fatty compounds that aloe alone lacks. For combination skin, glycerin is sufficient.
Refreshing variation after a hot day
This is where aloe is most convincing: on heated skin, cold provides as much relief as the gel itself.
Place the closed bottle in the refrigerator for thirty minutes, never in the freezer. Apply one tablespoon to clean skin, leave on for five minutes, then rinse with cool water.
And never apply ice directly: a surface at sub-zero temperatures on delicate skin can cause cold-induced injury. The area around the eyes is the most vulnerable.
A useful reminder: cold and aloe soothe a sensation of heat; they do not repair the effects of exposure. They are no substitute for sun protection.
Tolerance test and signs to stop use
- Apply a small amount under the jawline for five minutes.
- Rinse and wait twenty-four hours before applying to the face.
- Discontinue use if burning, swelling, or persistent redness occurs.
- Do not add lemon or essential oil.
- Prepare a single dose and discard any leftover.
Lemon has a pH of approximately 2 and is photosensitizing: applied before sun exposure, it can create spots instead of reducing them. Essential oils do not contribute to a moisturizing effect and add allergenic molecules.
An allergic reaction to aloe is rare but can occur, especially in people sensitive to plants of the lily family.
The action that changes the result
Apply the gel to skin that is still slightly damp after cleansing. This residual water facilitates spreading and allows for a thinner layer, meaning less product for better distribution.
If the gel dries forming a tight film, there are two solutions: add two to three drops of squalane to the mixture, or cover after rinsing with a cream containing glycerin and ceramides.
Never let the gel dry completely on the skin. A dried aloe film pulls on the stratum corneum exactly like cracked clay.
What aloe vera does not do
It does not provide lasting hydration on its own. Composed of over 98% water and without any fatty compounds, it provides water that evaporates within one to two hours without an occlusive layer. On dry skin, used alone, it can even accentuate tightness.
It does not remove hyperpigmentation spots. These require depigmenting active ingredients and daily photoprotection over several months. See our guide to dark spots.
It does not protect against UV rays, and using it after exposure does not undo any damage.
What it does do, however, is real: it soothes a sensation of heat, provides immediate comfort, and is suitable for skin that tolerates almost nothing else. It is a base, not an active ingredient. See our aloe vera gel guide.
A base, therefore for daily use
A weekly mask draws little benefit from an ingredient whose main advantage is regularity: aloe vera soothes and provides comfort, which is needed daily, not once a week. An aloe vera cream offers the same benefits at the right pace, with the mask remaining a refreshing gesture.
