Two plants that are entirely different, starting with their terrain. The prickly pear, Opuntia ficus indica, is a cactus from arid regions: it stores water in its pads and opens its stomata at night. Sea buckthorn, on the other hand, is a thorny shrub found in coastal dunes and mountains, which fixes nitrogen from the air thanks to bacteria housed in its roots.
Two opposing survival strategies, therefore, and two compositions that reflect this. The first conserves; the second colonizes poor soils by enriching them itself. Neither is superior: they solve different problems.
When to prefer prickly pear
For a comprehensive premium routine where radiance is part of a complete nourishing treatment.
The prickly pear, also known as Indian fig, bears large yellow to orange flowers in spring, directly on the edge of its pads. The fruits that follow ripen at the end of summer and are harvested by hand.
The plant has spread throughout the Mediterranean basin to the point of appearing indigenous, and this is where most of the current production comes from. The Opuntia prickly pear grows where sea buckthorn would not thrive — and the reverse is true, each being unsuited to the other's terrain.
When to prefer sea buckthorn
For a radiance / dull complexion focus, as a booster, when you want to concentrate the "healthy glow" effect in appearance.
NOPAL LIFE's recommendation

A word about the plant itself, often confused with other species. The prickly pear is native to Mexico and was brought back in the 16th century; it is known in different regions as Indian fig or nopal. Its yellow-orange flowers open in spring on the edge of the pads.
There are many varieties, distinguished by the color of the fruit and the presence or absence of spines. The cultivated forms for consumption are selected to have as few as possible; spontaneous forms, however, are covered in them. It is a single species, Opuntia ficus indica, with very unequal forms depending on what has been done with it.
Throughout the Mediterranean basin, the fruits are eaten fresh at the end of summer. The plant can also be grown in garden soil in mild climates, in very well-draining potting soil, provided it is protected from wet frost, which kills it more surely than dry cold.

Frequently asked questions about prickly pear vs sea buckthorn
What is each one's specialty?
Prickly pear excels in anti-aging and nourishment (vitamin E, sterols); sea buckthorn shines in radiance and vitality (carotenoids, omega-7). Youth on one side, light on the other.
Which one for a dull complexion?
Sea buckthorn first: its carotenoids give a visible healthy glow effect. Prickly pear complements by restoring the skin's underlying health, which creates lasting radiance.
Won't sea buckthorn oil color the skin?
Pure and in excess, it can give a temporary orange tint. Well-dosed or diluted in a neutral oil like prickly pear, it offers a healthy glow effect without the color.
Can they be combined?
Yes, beautifully: 1 drop of sea buckthorn in 3 drops of prickly pear = a homemade radiance + anti-aging serum, to be used in the evening.
Which one is richer in vitamin E?
Prickly pear, significantly — it is one of the most concentrated oils in the plant kingdom. Sea buckthorn compensates with its carotenoids and rare omega-7.
Which one for mature skin exposed to the sun?
The duo: sea buckthorn supports the repair of sun-exposed skin, prickly pear protects and nourishes long-term. Summer calls for both.
