Why prickly pear seed oil is so rich: an in-depth look at its composition

One of the most precious vegetable oils

Prickly pear seed oil is regularly cited as one of the rarest and most coveted vegetable oils in cosmetics. Its rarity is primarily due to its yield: it takes almost a ton of fruit to obtain about a liter of oil. But beyond its rarity, it is its composition that explains its reputation. Let's explore.

A remarkable vitamin E content

Prickly pear stands out for its natural richness in tocopherols (vitamin E), recognized in cosmetics for their antioxidant properties. This content, among the highest in the plant kingdom, makes the oil a valued ingredient in skincare products aimed at preserving the skin's radiance and suppleness over time.

Between 600 and 1000 mg of tocopherols per kilo according to analyses, which is three to five times more than argan oil. This is the characteristic that distinguishes Opuntia ficus indica from all other vegetable oils on the market.

Sold internationally as prickly pear seed oil—or opuntia ficus indica seed oil on INCI lists—it owes this content to the species itself, not to the process. Cold pressing preserves it; refining removes some of it.

Essential fatty acids in good proportion

The oil is mainly composed of linoleic acid (omega-6) and oleic acid (omega-9). Linoleic acid is particularly interesting: it contributes to the comfort of the hydrolipidic film and the sensation of suppleness. This fatty acid signature explains the dry touch and rapid penetration appreciated by combination and mature skin types.

Approximately 60% linoleic acid, 20% oleic acid, 5% palmitic acid. This profile explains the dry feel of this oil and its ability to suit even combination skin.

Free radicals produced by radiation primarily degrade these polyunsaturated fatty acids. This is where vitamin E comes in: it protects from within what cold pressing has preserved, and unrefined organic prickly pear oil retains both.

Sterols and minor compounds: the true signature

Beyond the major constituents, it is often the minor compounds that determine an oil's value: plant sterols, polyphenols, vitamin K. Present in small amounts, they contribute to the overall richness and stability of the oil. It is this combination—and not a single ingredient—that explains why prickly pear is so sought after.

Beta-sitosterol, campesterol, vitamin K1: these are the minor compounds that differentiate an Opuntia ficus indica oil from a simple mixture of fatty acids.

They do not appear on any label and disappear during refining. Looking for the mention "cold pressed" is therefore looking for their presence, with no other way to verify it.

What this changes in a skincare product

A well-composed oil is used as a signature treatment: a few drops at the end of your routine, on clean skin, for a comfortable finish. Its richness in antioxidants makes it an ally for routines focused on radiance and daily prevention—in the cosmetic sense of the term.

An oil rich in linoleic acid thins sebum instead of thickening it. This explains why combination skin tolerates it where an oleic-rich oil clogs pores.

In the anti-aging field, tocopherols are what matter. Their action against free radicals accumulates day by day, and it is consistency rather than quantity that makes it perceptible.
