Sebum is not a skin defect; it's one of its functions. It protects, limits water evaporation, and contributes to the balance of the skin's microbiota. What is called excess sebum is a production greater than what the surface can absorb—and its causes rarely come down to just the product applied in the morning.
What controls skin sebum production
Sebaceous glands are under hormonal control, mainly androgenic. This is why production varies with age, cycle, and why it is, on average, higher in men. No cosmetic care acts on this determinant: it is internal.
Three factors modulate this sebum production without controlling it:
- Temperature. Secretion increases significantly with heat—hence the seasonal variation many notice.
- The state of the skin barrier. Dehydrated or stripped skin produces more sebum as compensation: excess sebum is then a signal, not an inevitability.
- Applied products. An overly strong cleanser, a drying alcohol, or excessive occlusion disrupt the balance.
Shininess and excess facial sebum are not synonymous
Skin can shine without actual excess sebum: a poorly distributed film, an irregular stratum corneum, or an overly occlusive product are enough to create a shiny appearance. Conversely, high production can go unnoticed on skin with a tight grain.
The distinction is useful because it changes the response. Surface shine is corrected by product texture. Truly high production requires long-term work and an acceptance of what is physiological.
Where excess facial sebum appears
The distribution of sebaceous glands is not uniform. Their density is highest in the area of the face known as the T-zone: forehead, nose, chin. This is why excess facial sebum is concentrated there, while the cheeks may remain normal, or even dry—the typical configuration of combination oily skin.
Beyond the face, the same density is found on the chest and upper back. Excess sebum affecting the forehead, nose, chin, and chest simultaneously indicates generalized excessive sebum production, rather than a localized skincare issue.
Sebum does not circulate alone: mixed with sweat, it forms the hydrolipidic film that protects the surface. Sweat and the hydrolipidic film work together, which explains why shininess increases with exertion or high heat without actual changes in sebaceous production.
Excess sebum and imperfections: blackheads, whiteheads, pimples
Excess sebum alone does not cause imperfections. It requires the conjunction of three factors: excessive sebum production, irregular desquamation that clogs the pore opening, and the proliferation of a naturally present bacterium.
When the clogged pore remains open, sebum oxidizes on contact with air and darkens: these are blackheads. When it is closed, the content remains under the surface and forms whiteheads. Inflammatory pimples appear when the pore wall breaks. On acne-prone skin, these three forms often coexist, and acne-related excess sebum manifests as this combination rather than just shininess.
This distinction guides the approach: imperfections, blackheads, and whiteheads are primarily related to the regularity of surface renewal, while inflammatory forms mainly require avoiding aggression. See the routine adapted to imperfections.
The rebound effect, a central and little-understood mechanism
This phenomenon explains the majority of situations that worsen despite efforts. Aggressive cleansing removes surface sebum, and the skin, deprived of its protection, reacts. The relief lasts two to three hours, then the shine returns—often more pronounced.

Active ingredients that actually affect appearance
Niacinamide is the most well-documented active ingredient for pore appearance and mattifying. Usual concentrations are between 4 and 10%.
Salicylic acid is fat-soluble: it penetrates the pore and limits accumulation. Its use is occasional, starting twice a week.
Clay masks absorb excess surface oil. Their effect is temporary and does not alter production—it is a comfort gesture, not a fundamental treatment.
What none of these active ingredients do: durably reduce secretion. Formulations that suggest otherwise exceed what cosmetics can claim.
Skin cleansing: first lever against excess sebum, and first mistake
For skin with excess sebum, two cleansings per day are sufficient, and one is suitable for many skin types—in the evening. In the morning, water or a very gentle cleanser prevents aggression to skin that has only been resting.
Lukewarm water rather than hot, thirty seconds rather than two minutes, and a feeling of suppleness after rinsing: if the skin feels tight, the product is too stripping, regardless of the impression of cleanliness it provides. See the cleansing foam and its limits.
What lifestyle influences, and what it doesn't
Available data associate a high glycemic index diet and certain dairy products with increased sebaceous production in some affected individuals. The effect exists, it is moderate, and it varies greatly from person to person.
Heat and humidity, however, have an immediate and clear effect. An excess that appears only in summer often relates to the season, not an imbalance to be corrected.
Excess sebum: actions that worsen instead of helping
Some very common habits perpetuate facial excess sebum instead of reducing it.
- Repeated use of blotting paper. It absorbs surface sebum without affecting production, and repeated use irritates the facial skin in the T-zone.
- Alcohol in toner. The matte effect is immediate, but the induced dryness reactivates excessive sebum production in the hours that follow.
- Frequent mechanical exfoliation. On acne-prone skin, rubbing spreads imperfections and weakens the hydrolipidic film.
- Skipping hydration. This is the most costly mistake: skin deprived of water compensates with more sebum.

Excess sebum in men and women
Sebum production is, on average, higher in men due to androgens, and it remains stable longer with age. In women, it varies throughout the cycle and significantly decreases after menopause—oily skin at twenty often becomes combination skin at forty.

Excess sebum: when to consult a doctor

The rebound effect, and how we create it ourselves
