Face sunscreen is the only skincare product with a proven, undisputed anti-aging effect. Ultraviolet radiation is responsible for about 80% of visible skin aging—wrinkles, loss of firmness, and dark spots. No serum or active ingredient can undo the damage that daily face sunscreen protection prevents. It is also the face sunscreen that is most often poorly chosen and applied.
UVA, UVB rays: what face sunscreen protects against
UVB rays act on the surface. They cause sunburn. Their intensity varies greatly depending on the time of day, season, and altitude.
UVA rays penetrate deeper, down to the dermis, where they break down collagen and elastin fibers. They pass through clouds and windows, and their intensity remains stable throughout the year. They are the main culprits behind photoaging and the appearance of dark spots.
SPF only measures protection against UVB. A properly formulated face sunscreen therefore also carries the UVA mention in a circle, guaranteeing UVA protection at least equal to one-third of the displayed SPF. Without this mention, a high sunscreen SPF says nothing about deep protection: you should look for broad-spectrum face sunscreen.
In France, as in the rest of the European Union, this dual requirement for UVA and UVB rays is regulated: a sun protection product cannot display an index without satisfying the minimum ratio between the two filtrations. This is a guarantee not always offered by sun care products purchased outside the European market.
What SPF sunscreen to choose for the face

The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 may seem small in percentage, but it doubles the amount of radiation blocked on the remaining 3%. For the face, exposed all year round and never covered by clothing, an SPF 50+ face sunscreen is the default choice as soon as there is a concern for dark spots or wrinkle prevention.
The SPF scale is misleading because it is not linear. An index of 30 blocks about 97% of UVB, while an index of 50 blocks nearly 98%. The difference seems negligible when written like this; however, in terms of what passes through, it is not: one-third less radiation reaches the cells.
High protection refers to indices 30 and 50, while very high protection refers to what European labeling designates as 50+. Beyond this, regulations prohibit displaying a higher number, precisely because the gain becomes impossible to distinguish in real-world conditions.
The choice therefore comes down to something else: consistency of use. An SPF 30 reapplied at noon performs better than an SPF 50+ applied only once in the morning, and this comparison is almost entirely decisive.
Face sunscreen: mineral filters or organic filters
Mineral filters — zinc oxide, titanium dioxide — reflect and absorb radiation. They act immediately, are very well tolerated by reactive skin, and their environmental profile is better documented. Their drawback lies in the finish: a mineral face sunscreen can leave a white cast, particularly visible on darker skin tones.
Organic filters, often called chemical filters, absorb radiation and dissipate it. They allow for much more fluid and invisible face sunscreens, but require about twenty minutes to be fully active and are more frequently implicated in intolerances.
Recent face sunscreens often combine both families to balance tolerance and comfort. For sensitive skin prone to redness, a mineral face sunscreen remains the safest option.
The debate is often framed in terms of sides, when in fact it concerns two different physical processes. Mineral filters reflect and scatter radiation; organic filters absorb it and release it as heat. Neither forms an impermeable shield, and both degrade with use.
In practice, most recent formulations combine both types, because each covers a portion of the spectrum that the other covers poorly. A product advertised as 100% mineral is not inherently superior; it merely imposes other compromises, regarding residual whiteness and sensoriality.
For easily reactive skin, mineral formulas retain a real advantage: they remain on the surface and hardly penetrate. This is the only case where the choice is clear-cut, and it depends on tolerance rather than efficacy.
Choosing your face sunscreen according to skin type
This determines whether you will actually apply the product every day — and a face sunscreen that isn't applied offers no protection. Sun care ranges are now categorized by skin type, and this segmentation makes sense.
Combination to oily skin: a facial sun fluid or an oil control SPF texture, with a matte finish. Face sun protection formats: fluid, lotion, stick, mist
The format is not a marketing detail: it determines the quantity of face sunscreen actually applied to the skin.
Facial sun fluid remains the most suitable format for daily use under makeup. Sun lotion, richer, is suitable for dry skin and the body. SPF sun stick is invaluable for difficult areas — bridge of the nose, ears, eye contour — and for reapplying face sunscreen during the day without removing makeup.
Mists pose a real problem: they give the impression of having applied protection, whereas the quantity deposited is much lower than the reference dose. Useful for reapplication, never as the primary face sunscreen.
The light texture has changed habits more surely than any scientific argument. The formulas of twenty years ago left a white and sticky film that many refused to wear daily; today's offer a dry touch that is forgotten in a few seconds.
This is not a cosmetic detail. A pleasant product is reapplied; an unpleasant product ends up at the bottom of a drawer. Manufacturers have understood this, and much of the progress in recent years has focused on sensoriality rather than the filters themselves.
The stick fills a useful niche: narrow areas, the nose, ears, hairline, and touch-ups outdoors without a mirror or clean hands. It does not replace the main format; it complements it where the latter is impractical.
Face and body sun protection: why not use the same product
There's nothing prohibiting using a single face and body SPF, and it's always better than nothing. But three differences justify a dedicated face sunscreen.
Body sunscreens are greasier and more occlusive — facial skin reacts with blemishes. They don't hold up under makeup. And they are rarely tested around the eye contour, a thin-skinned area where crow's feet form precisely due to squinting in the sun.
Conversely, using a face sunscreen on the body works perfectly—it's simply more expensive per volume. Face sunscreens are formulated for a smaller surface area.
The amount of face sunscreen, the most underestimated factor
The advertised SPF is measured in the laboratory with 2 milligrams of product per square centimeter. For a face, this represents approximately half a teaspoon of face sunscreen, significantly more than what most people apply.
The two-finger rule provides a concrete guide: two lines of face sunscreen along the entire length of the index and middle fingers, spread over the face and neck. Applying half as much does not halve the protection; it reduces it much more significantly—an SPF 50 applied in insufficient quantity protects like an SPF 15.
When to apply your face sunscreen and how often to reapply it
Face sunscreen is applied as the last step in the morning routine, after serum and moisturizer, but before makeup. It does not replace hydration, unless the face sunscreen itself is formulated as a hydrating product with SPF.
Reapplication every two hours is necessary during exposure—beach, mountains, prolonged outdoor time. For urban use, one application of face sunscreen in the morning covers most of a day spent indoors. After swimming or significant sweating, reapplication is necessary immediately, even with water-resistant sun care products.
Face sunscreen in winter and on cloudy days
UVA rays penetrate clouds and maintain a similar intensity all year round. Skin behind a window is exposed to them daily, without sunburn to signal it—hence the importance of face sunscreen even in December.

Clouds allow a large portion of UVA rays to pass through, the same ones that penetrate windows. A grey day is therefore not a day without exposure, and it is this confusion that explains the premature aging observed in people who are convinced they are never exposed.
Altitude and reflection add their part. Snow reflects nearly 80% of received radiation, sand about 15%, and calm water a little less. A day of skiing exposes you more than a day at the beach with the same index, which still surprises many people.
Then there's the indoor case. Behind a window, the risk exists but becomes modest; it warrants action for someone who works hours near a bay window, but not for someone who just walks through a room.
After an exfoliant or retinoid
Recently exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to radiation. After a peel, use of acids, or introduction of a retinoid in the evening, next day's face sunscreen is no longer an option: it determines whether the treatment brings benefit or causes dark spots.
This is why serious protocols always combine cellular renewal in the evening with face sunscreen in the morning. One without the other is counterproductive.
These active ingredients accelerate the renewal of surface cells. The new layer is younger, thinner, and has not yet built up its defenses: it marks more quickly. This is the mechanism, and it's not trivial — it's the main reason why these treatments are started in the fall.
Three precautions are enough. Introduce only one active ingredient at a time, space out applications during the first few weeks, and never skip the morning step throughout the treatment period. The third is the least respected and the most crucial.
The marine environment adds its own difficulty. Salt, wind, and towel friction remove the product faster than expected, and the reapplication rhythm must be adjusted accordingly.
Price of a face sunscreen and what it covers
Face sunscreens range from a few euros in supermarkets to around thirty euros in pharmacies. The level of protection itself is regulated and verified: an SPF 50+ face sunscreen in a supermarket protects as much as an SPF 50+ in a pharmacy.
The price difference covers texture, finish, formula tolerance for reactive skin, absence of fragrance, and presence of complementary antioxidants. In other words, it's about what determines whether you'll apply your face sunscreen every day—which, ultimately, matters more than the displayed index.
Filters represent a modest portion of the final price. The bulk of the cost comes from formulation — achieving a pleasant texture with 20% filters is a difficult exercise — and from regulatory tests, which are expensive and must be redone with each modification.
This is why two products with almost identical ingredients can be priced from single to triple. The difference rarely concerns what protects, often what makes wearing it bearable, sometimes only the packaging and its distribution.
A useful benchmark: compare the price per milliliter rather than per bottle. A person who applies the recommended dose to the upper body consumes a standard container in five to six summer weeks. At this rate, the difference between two ranges becomes a concrete sum, which should be measured before choosing.
