Combining argan oil and glycerin: the humidity decides

Vegetable glycerin can moisturize or dry out depending on the weather. This is not a shock formula; it's a physical property. And that's exactly what argan oil is used to correct.

What a Humectant Is

Glycerin attracts and retains water. The question is where this water comes from. In humid air, it draws it from the atmosphere and deposits it on the skin's surface. In dry air — less than forty percent humidity — it draws it from the lower layers.

This is why a glycerin serum can cause a feeling of tightness in the middle of winter, with the heating on. The product is not at fault; the physics of the humectant is, and the solution lies in an additional layer.

Argan Oil as a Cover

Vegetable oils do not hydrate; they limit evaporation. Applied over a layer of glycerin, argan oil locks in the attracted water and prevents it from escaping, regardless of the ambient air.

Its profile is well-suited to this role. Rich in oleic and linoleic acid, with a notable unsaponifiable fraction, it partially penetrates and leaves a light film — enough to seal, not enough to suffocate.

The Order, Without Exception

Glycerin first, on clean and still damp skin. Wait one minute. Then argan oil, two to three drops warmed between the palms.

Reversing the order makes the first step useless: a humectant applied over a greasy film does not penetrate. This is the general rule of skincare, from the thinnest to the thickest, and it suffers no exception here.

At What Concentration

In cosmetic formulations, glycerin is found between three and ten percent. Above that, the texture becomes sticky; below three, its effect is marginal. Pure glycerin bought in a bottle must imperatively be diluted — five percent in water or a hydrosol, no more.

Applying pure glycerin to the skin produces the opposite of the desired effect, and this is the most common mistake with this inexpensive and easy-to-find ingredient.

For Which Skin Types, and for Hair

All skin types, glycerin being one of the best tolerated cosmetic ingredients available. Argan oil is suitable for dry and normal skin, can be used on dry areas of combination skin, and should be reserved for hair ends.

On hair, the same logic applies: glycerin in a diluted spray, then oil on the lengths. The same trap of dry air produces the same effects, with frizz as a bonus.

In the Catalog

The nourishing face oil plays the role of the second layer, and the hydrating day cream with hyaluronic acid already combines humectant and emollient for those who prefer a single product. Our product sheets for vegetable glycerin and argan oil provide more details.

Using Vegetable Glycerin Daily

Vegetable glycerin can be used in three ways: diluted in a hydrosol as a toner, incorporated into a commercial cream with a few drops, or as is in a preparation for dry hair. In all three cases, dilution is the rule.

It is found in a large proportion of cleansers, gels, and soaps on the market, where it serves both texture and hydration. Its presence in an ingredient list is therefore commonplace and does not indicate the quality of the product.

On Dry Hair

The same principle applies: glycerin attracts water, argan oil retains it. A spray bottle containing five percent glycerin in water, then a few drops of argan oil on the lengths and ends.

In dry weather, glycerin alone on hair produces the exact opposite of the desired effect: it draws water from the hair fiber and frizz worsens. This is the same trap as on skin, and it is corrected in the same way — by the layer that follows.

What Can Be Combined

Aloe vera gel combines very well with glycerin in an aqueous phase: both are water-soluble and work on water retention through different pathways. Vegetable oils — jojoba, macadamia, hazelnut — can replace argan depending on skin type.

Essential oils, however, have no place here. They contribute nothing to hydration, are dosed in fractions of a percent, and introduce allergens where there were none.

According to Skin Types

Dry skin: glycerin and argan oil, morning and evening. Combination skin: the aqueous phase everywhere, oil on the cheeks. Oily skin: glycerin alone is often sufficient, oil reserved for winter. Sensitive skin: both are suitable, glycerin being one of the most tolerated ingredients in the department.

On the body, quantities can be multiplied without particular precaution. Legs and arms accept doses that the face would not tolerate, and this is where the combination gives the quickest visible result.

Where Vegetable Glycerin Comes From

It is obtained through a chemical process — saponification or transesterification of vegetable oils. Rapeseed, coconut, and palm are the most common sources. The molecule resulting from this extraction is identical regardless of the starting plant.

The mention "vegetable" therefore distinguishes the origin of the raw material, not the properties of the finished product. Vegetable glycerin and synthetic glycerin behave in exactly the same way on the skin, and it is useful to know this before paying the difference.

A Base Adapted to Each Use

As a skincare base, glycerin can be used in a toner, in a shower gel, in a shampoo, or in a cream. Its versatility explains why it is found in a huge proportion of products in the department, from the simplest to the most expensive.

Argan oil, on the other hand, is chosen according to the area: the face, body, ends, or scalp. Its fatty acids — oleic and linoleic especially — make it suitable for dry skin and hair, much less for oily roots.

Skin and Hair Hydration: The Same Rule

For both skin and hair, the order does not change: humectant first, oil then. What varies is the quantity and the area. Using glycerin alone, without applying anything over it, in both cases means relying on air humidity.

When this air is dry, the result is reversed. This is the only thing to remember about this ingredient, and it explains almost all the disappointments attributed to it.
