From plant to bottle: where the raw material comes from

The cultivated tomato is botanically named Solanum lycopersicum. In an INCI list, it most often appears in its full form "Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract" — the English mention tomato in parentheses is a convention of the international standard, not a different ingredient.

The plant belongs to the Solanaceae family, which includes several cultivated species among our common vegetables. It is a fast-growing annual: sowing in spring, flowering in early summer, harvesting when the fruit turns red. It requires well-drained soil, warmed earth, and plenty of light — three conditions met by open-field cultivation in southern Europe, in France as well as in Italy or Spain.

Season matters: it is at the end of the ripening period, under full sun, that the average lycopene content of the fruit is highest. Too early a harvest yields pale raw material, therefore poor in pigment. Finally, a point of caution: only the fruit and its seeds are used in cosmetics. The leaves, stem, and foliage of the plant are never used — they contain alkaloids specific to Solanaceae.

The calendar that determines the color

Open-field cultivation always follows the same rhythm: planting in spring, flowering a few weeks later, then a long period of fruit ripening until the late summer harvest. Under greenhouses, the season is longer but light is filtered, affecting fruit color. The best pigmented extracts generally come from open-field batches harvested in season — July to September in our latitudes — rather than off-season productions.

The fruit itself is richer than commonly believed: beyond lycopene, it provides vitamin C, some vitamin E, and sugars. These compounds degrade quickly after harvest, which is why producers process tomatoes within hours of being picked in the field. A variety harvested green then ripened in a chamber will never reach the content of a fruit ripened on the plant.

The seeds, on the other hand, are a co-product: after pressing the fruits for concentrate, the seeds are separated, dried, then cold-pressed. This mechanical, solvent-free method best preserves unsaturated fatty acids — it is also the method NOPAL LIFE uses for its prickly pear seed oil. Label reading tip: if the INCI mentions "Seed Oil", you have an oil; if it mentions "Fruit Extract", you have an extract. The two do not have the same function or the same dosage.

Extract, seed oil or macerate: which to choose

Introducing an antioxidant active without disrupting reactive skin requires a progressive approach. Here's the recommended procedure, in three fourteen-day stages, to fairly judge a tomato-based treatment before incorporating it into your routine.

Days 1 to 14

Evening only. 3 drops of tomato seed oil, 4 evenings a week, on still slightly damp skin to limit greasiness. No other new active ingredients during these 14 days.

Days 15 to 28

Add in the morning. 2 pumps of antioxidant serum, then wait 2 minutes before sunscreen, allowing the layer to penetrate. Evening routine remains unchanged.

Days 29 to 42

Measure. Daily routine, and a photo on day 1 then day 42: same room, same time, indirect daylight, without makeup. This is the only reliable benchmark for judging radiance.

The 20-minute rule

If your routine includes an acid exfoliant, leave 20 minutes between it and the red treatment: the two coexist better spaced than layered.

The combination that works. Tomato seed oil and prickly pear seed oil complement each other well: the first provides a dry feel that doesn't shine, the second the nourishment that lasts all night. A homemade blend should be prepared in small quantities, in an opaque bottle, and consumed within three months.
