Propolis: The Protective Resin of the Hive

Before being a cosmetic active, propolis is a building material. Bees collect it from buds as a sticky gum, mix it with wax, then line the entrance and frames of their habitat with it. This brown substance, with a balsamic scent, is now used in formulas designed for combination and blemish-prone skin: it helps maintain a clear complexion and the comfort of stressed skin.

The essentials to remember
  • It's not a bee secretion: the raw material is a vegetable gum collected from buds, which worker bees then rework with some of their own secretions and waxy matter.
  • Orders of magnitude for raw propolis: approximately 50% resinous balms, 30% wax, 10% aromatic compounds, 5% pollen, and 5% residual sugars, organic acids, and minerals.
  • Rarity makes the price: 100 to 300 g per hive per year, when the same colony produces tens of kilograms of honey.
  • Four cosmetic forms are in circulation, at very different doses: mother tincture (0.5 to 2%), glycerinated extract (1 to 5%), dry extract (0.1 to 0.5%) and waxy fraction, INCI Propolis Cera (2 to 10%).
  • It is a bee product: a 48-hour tolerance test, a drop in the crook of the elbow, is essential before any facial use.

From bud to colony: where this matter comes from

Propolis is not entirely manufactured by the insect: it is first gathered. From the buds of poplar, birch, alder, or conifers, worker bees collect a sticky gum, transport it on their hind legs, then rework it by incorporating some of their own secretions and waxy matter. The word itself describes its use: pro polis, "before the city." The colony uses it to narrow the entrance, seal cracks, and smooth the frames — a finishing coat as much as a barrier.

Beekeepers collect it by placing a flexible grid with fine openings, which the bees fill themselves; the grid is then chilled so that the material detaches in flakes. Collection usually occurs at the end of the season, before wintering. The quantities are modest: 100 to 300 g per hive per year with a grid, only a few tens of grams when the material is simply scraped from the frames. Compared to the tens of kilograms of honey produced by the same colony: this is where most of the raw material's price comes from.

A direct consequence for the formula: no harvest is identical to the previous one. The color ranges from light blonde to almost black brown, the scent from light balsamic to powerful woody, depending on the flora foraged and the season. This is why a quality extract is standardized in the laboratory, and not simply diluted. Propolis from poplar buds does not have the same profile as that from Mediterranean flora.

What the raw material contains

Indicative composition of raw propolis — proportions vary with foraged flora and season.

Fraction Indicative Proportion Contribution to a cosmetic formula
Resins and balms ≈ 50 % The desired part: polyphenols and flavonoids, which give the extract its amber color and purifying character.
Wax ≈ 30 % Fatty substance from forager bees (INCI Propolis Cera): thickens balms and sticks, provides an occlusive finish.
Volatile aromatic compounds ≈ 10 % They contribute to the characteristic balsamic odor; to be used sparingly on reactive skin.
Pollen ≈ 5 % Amino acids and trace minerals; it is also the fraction that makes the ingredient sensitizing for some individuals.
Other organic compounds ≈ 5 % Sugars, organic acids, and residual minerals.

Four forms, four facial sensations

The extraction solvent changes everything: color, smell, the dose the formula can tolerate, and especially what the skin feels. The percentages below are general guidelines observed in cosmetic formulation, never strict rules.

Form Common INCI Extraction medium Typical dose in formula Appearance & scent When to prefer it
Mother tincture Propolis Extract Alcohol (ethanol) 0.5 to 2 % Amber-brown liquid, distinct balsamic scent Concentrated purifying care; avoid if it causes tightness.
Glycerinated extract Propolis Extract, Glycerin Vegetable glycerine 1 to 5 % Syrupy, amber, softened scent Alcohol-free serums, lotions and mists, for more reactive skin.
Dry extract Propolis Extract Evaporated solvent, then powder 0.1 to 0.5 % Dark brown powder, subtle scent Masks and anhydrous formulas; this is the most concentrated form, so it should be weighed to the tenth of a gram.
Propolis wax Propolis Cera Isolated waxy fraction 2 to 10 % Brown paste, almost odorless Balms and sticks: protective texture for exposed areas.

Cosmetic benefits

Usage properties: expected benefits include improved appearance, comfort, and complexion clarity.

Clear complexion

Its surface action helps maintain a clear appearance in areas prone to imperfections.

Daily comfort

Supports the comfort of skin stressed by cold, wind, or excessive cleansing.

Protective film effect

The waxy fraction helps limit the visible effects of external aggressions.

Botanical richness

A concentrate of compounds derived from buds, with a profile that changes from season to season.

The 48-hour tolerance test

Propolis is a beehive product, just like royal jelly: it can sensitize people who react to it. Before any facial use, we recommend this protocol. It requires two days, one drop, and two square centimeters of skin.

Day 0 · morning

Apply 1 drop of the product in the crook of the elbow, over approximately 2 cm². Do not rinse, do not apply anything else to the area for the rest of the day.

Day 0 · +12 h

Observe the area in the evening. Redness, warmth, or itching: rinse with lukewarm water and stop there.

Day 1 · morning

Reapply 1 drop to the same spot. With colony derivatives, a reaction often appears on the second contact rather than the initial contact.

Day 2 · 48 h

Area remained clear: proceed to face, initially 2 nights out of 3 for one week, then every night if all goes well.

In case of known allergy to bee stings or bee products, seek professional medical advice before use.

Propolis and prickly pear: two distinct roles

One comes from the hive, the other from the cactus. The colony's gum works on the clear appearance of marked areas; prickly pear oil, on the other hand, nourishes and softens. Layering them haphazardly dilutes the action of both.

Our layering rule, from thinnest to thickest: the purifying treatment first, on dry skin; 1 minute wait for it to absorb; then the light moisturizer; and finally 2 drops of prickly pear oil warmed between the palms, as the last step, on the cheeks and around the face — avoiding the T-zone (forehead and nose), where shine returns fastest.

Step 4

Targeted nourishment (evening)
2 drops of prickly pear oil on the cheeks and face contour, as the final step.

Choosing a product: what provides information, what doesn't

In this market, the narrative is often worth more than the bottle. Six concrete benchmarks, in the order we verify them:

  1. The INCI list. "Propolis Extract" or "Propolis Cera" must be explicitly listed. Its position in the list indicates the order of magnitude of the dosage — at the end of the list, the substance is mostly an argument.
  2. The medium. Ethanol, glycerin, or waxy fraction: it determines the sensation and dictates the dose. The same "2%" does not mean the same thing in a tincture, where it's at the high end of the range, as in a glycerinated extract, where it's in the middle.
  3. The laboratory and lot code. These allow tracing back to a specific harvest. A manufacturer who displays them takes responsibility for their supply chain.
  4. The minimum durability date. Aromatic compounds degrade in light and heat; an amber bottle and a readable date are better than a clear jar.
  5. Organic certification. An organic extract guarantees the management method of the colonies, not the richness in balms. Useful, but insufficient on its own.
  6. Consistency of advertised properties. A product sheet that promises wonders tells less than a detailed composition and a stated dosage.

What does not provide information: the price, which follows the cost of the material and the seller's positioning much more than the quality; delivery times and costs; an out-of-stock situation, which indicates strained supply, never superiority; finally, the volume of online reviews and comments. These feedbacks describe texture and scent, rarely dosage. An enthusiastic comment does not replace a lot code.

Last point: sprays and lozenges sold in pharmacies are health products, governed by different rules. Their formulation, dosage, and instructions for use have nothing in common with a cosmetic — such a spray cannot be applied to the face.

Frequently asked questions

What skin types is propolis recommended for?

Combination and blemish-prone skin, for which it helps maintain a clear appearance. Start with 1 to 2 drops in the evening, locally, 2 out of 3 evenings for the initial week, then adjust according to comfort felt.

Is propolis suitable for sensitive skin?

Caution: derived from the hive, it can sensitize individuals who react to bee products. Perform a 48-hour tolerance test — 1 drop in the crook of the elbow, repeated the next day — before any application to the face. A glycerinated extract will generally be better tolerated.

Mother tincture or glycerinated extract: which to choose?

Of the two, the tincture is richer in balms and more fragrant: it is dosed between 0.5 and 2%, and can make already dry skin feel tight. The glycerinated extract, prepared with glycerin, is used more generously — 1 to 5% — for a softer sensation, and integrates better into serums, lotions, and mists. To start, begin with the latter.

What's the difference between propolis, honey, and beeswax?

Three distinct products from the same colony, and three origins. Honey comes from transformed nectar; wax, from the bee's wax glands; propolis, from bud gum. Only the latter is a balsamic gum — hence its brown color and woody scent.

Where to buy cosmetic propolis, and at what price?

In pharmacies, organic stores, directly from a French apiary, or online. The price primarily follows the season's yield; in lean years, stockouts are frequent and delivery times extend. Neither the displayed amount nor the seller's reputation predicts quality: the label decides.

What can propolis be combined with in a routine?

Honey for softness, tea tree for local application only, and prickly pear for nourishment. The order matters: purifying treatment, 1 minute wait, light moisturizer, then 2 drops of prickly pear oil on the cheeks as the final step.
