A vast family, from French meadows to tropical forests
Orchids are not a single plant but a family: the Orchidaceae, with nearly 28,000 accepted species divided into several hundred genera (Christenhusz & Byng, Phytotaxa, 2016). The name of each species follows the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants: it is this Latin binomial, and not the commercial name, that identifies an orchid worldwide.
Most tropical species are epiphytic: they live perched on trees, without parasitizing their host, and develop fleshy aerial roots that capture rainwater and air humidity. French orchids, on the other hand, are terrestrial: the Orchis of the meadows, the Ophrys of calcareous grasslands, whose flower mimics the abdomen of an insect to attract pollinators. In between, botanical gardens cultivate entire collections of horticultural varieties, with colors ranging from pure white to deep pink, to deep purple.
The leaves are often thick and leathery, the floral stem — the scape — bears the flowers one after another, and flowering can last several months. The best illustration of this diversity is found in one name: out of this immense family, only one species has made a career in food, Vanilla planifolia, a vine whose fermented pod yields vanilla. A handful of other genera are cultivated for their cosmetic extracts; all the rest are ornamental or wild flora.

Orchid cultivation is considered difficult; it is mostly poorly explained. Caring for a potted Phalaenopsis – the quintessential house orchid – involves seven steps, and most failures come from over-care rather than neglect.

The 1% rule: reading orchid on a label
This is the only objective tool you have in store, and it's free. Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, Article 19, requires ingredients present at more than 1% to be listed in descending order of weight; below 1%, the brand arranges ingredients in any order it chooses. Therefore, there is no "hidden percentage": the list itself reveals the proportions.
Three practical tips when a product highlights an orchid:
- Look for the Latin name, never the marketing mention: Orchis Mascula Flower Extract, Dendrobium Nobile Extract, Vanda Coerulea Extract, Bletilla Striata Root Extract. A simple "orchid extract" without a species tells you little.
- Locate it relative to the preservative (phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, sodium benzoate…) and the fragrance. These ingredients rarely exceed 1%: everything that follows them is, in practice, below this threshold.
- Look at what comes before. If the first five names are water, an emollient, a humectant, and two emulsifiers, the formula is primarily a good base — the orchid is the finishing touch, not the driving force.
This is not a flaw. A low-dose flower extract in a well-constructed base is better than a star extract in a poorly formulated product.

- Day 0 — a photo of your face without makeup, in daylight, near the same window. Note the time: you will take it again at the same time.
- Day 1 to 28 — 3 drops of serum morning and evening, 30 seconds wait before cream, without changing anything else in your routine.
- Day 14 — second photo, same framing. If there is a noticeable change, it is generally comfort and skin texture that are noticed first.
- Day 28 — third photo. Compare the three side by side: this is the only worthwhile comparison, the one with yourself.
A 28-day cycle corresponds to the usual renewal rate for the epidermis of a young adult; it lengthens with age, hence the interest in measuring over a full month.
